Research-Based Practices
1. Describe what constitutes a research-based practice for addiction and substance use
disorders.
Research-based practice involves several critical components which make it more effective.
First, there are thorough, orderly, intentional procedures to gain knowledge. Also, it involves
evidence-based thinking and the use of logic, the application of study designs aimed at arriving
results, apt analysis of data and methods of study, and peer reviewing and constructing on the
practices.
the study results to check the predictability of the observed outcomes. In addiction treatment, it
enables counselors to determine the best therapies to give patients based on feedback. This helps
to enhance patient outcomes. Moreover, the counselor is able to use research-based practice to
determine therapies that are beneficial to the client and eliminating those that are dangerous.
Besides, it enhances the counselor’s professional knowledge and gives them evidence-based
skills which are beneficial to the clients. Also, it assists counselors to collect and keep a good
record of data which is accurate and valid. Lastly, research based practices make it easy for
counselors to monitor their clients’ experience about their work together and the impact of their
2. Discuss methods for substance use counselors to remain aware of emerging research-
One of the methods used is conducting research to determine outcomes. Trying new approaches
opens up the scope of professionals to new and existing ideas on how to approach the merging
issues. Also, through attending seminars and training sessions, new challenges are posed and
they get information about the existence of new research based practices for use.
4. Review and select one emerging psychotherapy trend in the addiction and substance use
One of the emerging psychotherapy trends is the use of positive psychology treatment
approaches to clients with addictions. Ideally, positive psychology makes use of research to find
out the factors and acts that would inspire positive outlooks and well-being among people as well
as thriving communities (Doumas, Miller & Esp, 2019). Research is applied to widen the scope
of positive psychology from just decreasing dysfunctional behaviors to creating meaningful and

practices.
Implementing research based practice in research based facilities is very essential. It enables the
doctors to come up with the best approaches to handle different types of addictions. Furthermore,
it enhances the satisfaction of clients with the services offered, thus, enhancing outcomes.
Besides, implementing research based practices will enable the facilities to find an easy task
handling the emerging trends in the treatment of addictions since they will be knowledgeable.
ASSIGNMENT 4
2. Identify two to five research-based facilities in Arizona (or the state that you live in),
Arizona boasts a number of research based facilities whose aims are treating addictions. The five
centers include decision point center, cornerstone healing center, Prescott house, Sierra Tucson,
and Calvary Healing Center. All these centers deploy different therapeutic approaches in the
Decision Point Center focuses on chronic illness, addiction, and mental health. The treatment
programs in this facility are person-centered. Treatment is given for 45 days in which 14 days are
taken to run a thorough psychological, family, psychiatric, career, nutritional, and physical
assessment on the patient. This is coupled with other programs driven by curricula that ensure
that patients set off the pace on a high gear. A master treatment plan is created after the
assessment.
Cornerstone Healing center mainly offers three main treatment programs – partial
Hospitalization, Intensive Outpatient and Standard Outpatient. PHP is only designed for men
aged 18 and above for 2 – 3 months. Although the program is intensive, there is a relaxed
environment and sober living aimed at transforming lives. IOP deals with only women who are
aged 18 years and above. Their program lasts 3 hours per session unlike that one for men which
lasts 7 hours daily. Standard outpatient is a one-on-one engagement with clients for both men
and women aged 18 years and above. Different therapeutic options are given which are flexible
and convenient. Life skills, nutritional therapy, yoga, weight training, and meditation are some of
Prescott House is an addiction center only for men. The center labors to restore accountability
and integrity into their clients by fighting back the self-destructive behaviors. They develop
personalized care plans that seek to restore the wellness of their client. They offer individual
therapy within the first weeks of treatment where individuals meet with their doctors for
assessment. Mental disorders are checked during this time and treatment offered if found. Also,
group therapy is another kind of therapy offered by their facility. In this therapy, individuals
meet and share their stories and experiences thereby developing strength and insight to cope with
their addictions. Further, family therapy is offered by this center. In this therapy, the doctors
meet with the families and assess the family history and prepare families to face it all.
3. Discuss the success rate statistics from the research-based facilities that you identified.
All these facilities have enough to show that they are doing a great job. The testimonies from
people who have been victims but are currently well are enough to show the good work being
done in these centers. That said, the success rate at these centers is very high. Prescott House,
which is one of the best in Arizona, has better outcomes rating to 100%. This means that all
people who join the facility come out changes and better people in society. This is because they
have heavily invested in facilities that make it better than others. Their programs too are
Decision Point Center have success rates of 90% and 80% respectively. This is because some
patients get out but without attaining full recovery from addiction.
