ESE Conventional Revision TEST – II
Time Allowed: 90 min Maximum Marks: 100

INSTRUCTIONS
Please read each of the following instructions carefully before
attempting questions:
Candidates should attempt THREE questions in all.
Question No.1 is compulsory. Out of the remaining THREE questions
attempt any TWO.

The number of marks carried by a part of a question is indicated against

it.

Answers must be written in ENGLISH only.

Unless otherwise mentioned, symbols and notations have their usual

standard meanings.

Assume suitable data, if necessary and indicate the same clearly.

Neat sketches may be drawn, wherever required.

All parts and sub-parts of a question are to be attempted together in the

answer book.
Any pages left blank in the answer book must be clearly struck out.

01(a). Show that the mass of air, ma supplied for the

combustion of 1kg of fuel of known carbon content,
C% can be determined from the volumetric analysis
of dry products of combustion using
1 N 2C
ma  where N2 , CO2 and CO are the
33 Co 2  C 0
percentages by volume of gases Nitrogen , carbon
dioxide and carbon monoxide respectively .
(10 M)

01(b). Discuss the phenomenon of surge and choke in

centrifugal compressor. (10 M)

01(c). Air enters a diffuser at 6 bar and 500 K with a

velocity of 200m/s .The area ratio of diffuser is 4.
If the diffuser efficiency is 70% . Calculate
(i) Static pressure recovery coefficient
(ii) Total pressure loss coefficient
(iii) Static pressure at exit of diffuser
(Assume flow to be incompressible) (10 M)

01(d). A single acting reciprocating pump has a plunger 10

cm diameter and a stroke of 200mm. The centre of the
pump is 4m above the water level in the sump and
14m below the level of water in a tank to which water
is delivered by the pump. The diameter and length of
suction pipe are 40 mm and 6 m respectively while
those of delivery pipe are 30mm and 18 m
respectively. Determine the maximum speed at which
the pump may be run without separation, if separation
occurs at 7.848 N/cm2 below the atmospheric
pressure. Take atmospheric pressure head = 10.3 m of
water (10 M)

02(a). A balloon initially contains 40m3 of helium gas at

atmospheric conditions of 100 kPa and 17oC . The
balloon is connected by a valve to a large reservoir
that supplies helium gas 125 kPa and 25oC. Now the
valve is opened and helium is allowed to enter the
balloon until pressure equilibrium with the helium at
the supply line is reached. The material of the balloon
is such that its volume increases linearly with pressure
and no heat transfer takes place during this process.
Determine
(i) Final temperature in the balloon
(ii) Mass of the helium added
Ti = 25oC
Pi = 125 kPa Connected to tank

He
P1 = 100kPa
T1=17oC

Take R = 2.0769 kJ/kg.K,

Cp = 5.1926 kJ/kg.K. (15M)

02(b). A four cylinder two stroke cycle diesel engine running

at 300 rpm has a bore of 1200mm and stroke of 125
mm. The brake torque was measured as 420 N-m .
The volumetric efficiency of the engine is 62% . The

air fuel ratio is 21:1. Calorific value of the fuel is

4500 kJ/kg . The density of air at suction was 1.1
kg/m3. Determine the brake thermal efficiency and
brake mean effective pressure. If an orifice diameter
of 90mm was used. Determine the water head across
the orifice . Take coefficient of discharge for orifice

winter air conditioning. (10 M)

03.(c). A conical draft tube of a reaction turbine has

diameters of 1.5m and 2.0 m at its ends. It is set 7.0 m
above the tailrace level. When the discharge from the
turbine is 12m3/s,
calculate
