INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

The world that we are living today has many athletes that are young, like in high schools.

This generation has many athletes that are yet to become professional athletes. They join to their

Sports and train hard for the Competitions. This can positively and negatively affect their studies

if they train even if the class is starting. This happens because when they enter to the sports that

they want and get picked, they practice in class hours and gets left behind to their lessons, but

that’s not the case because playing a sport does not have a complete negative affect, according to

Laura Altobelli from livestrong.com “a commitment to school sports does not have to translate

into compromised academic performance.

Many people think that sports affect students’ learning ability in the classroom; they do,

but for the positive. When students play sports, it requires them to memorize, repeat, and learn.

All these skills translate into the classroom. In both places, goals are created and achieved. Most

data has shown that when students play sports, there are more benefits than negative downfalls.

Sports help academically, physically, and helps reduce pressure as well as stress. (Lemirand, E.,

2018)

According to Jasper Smits, the director of Anxiety Research and Treatment Program at

Southern Methodist University, playing sports can help reduce anxiety as well as depression. He

also said several times that sports do not only help long term, but can overall help improve your

mood and restore your energy. Sports do not only have emotional and mental benefits, but they
have physical benefits, as well. The short term benefits of playing sports include weight control, a

low strain on the heart, greatly increased heart rate, and helping athletes sleep at night.

Nowadays, when we join to our sports we think that if we join we will get left behind to

our studies. That’s why some students set their mindset that joining a sports is not good for their

studies including us researchers.

There is a growing concern to students who think their grades will be lower than their

previous remarks if they join sports. The concern of this study is to know the effects on academic

performance of being an athlete on senior high school students.

Meanwhile, in Halapitan National High School, some students don’t know the effects on

their academic performance of being an athlete. That’s why we chose this field of study because

we, ourselves also don’t know what good can we get if we become an athlete.

So, it aims to help learners to know the effects on academic performance on their studies

if they enter sports. But, it will also depend on what this study’s information gets.
Statement of the Problem

The study attempts to identify the effects on academic performance of being an athlete on

senior high school students.

Specifically, it will seek to answer the following questions:

1. How being an athlete can affect the academic performance?

2. Does participation in sport negatively affect academics?

3. Does participation in sport positively affect academics?

Objectives of the Study

The study aims to determine the effects on academic performance of being an athlete on

senior high school students on Halapitan National High School.

Specifically, this study will seek to;

1. Find out how being an athlete can affect the academic performance.

2. Find out if participating in sport negatively affect academics.

3. Find out if participating in sport positively affect academics.

Significance of the Study

This study will be useful to both students and teachers in a way that teachers could use this

as a basis on their teaching field. It could also help us to know what will be the effects on their

performance of being an athlete.

The results of this study will provide insights on the academe particularly on the Student’s

Perspective on Halapitan National High School (HNHS) teachers having Tattoos

For the school administration, the results of this study will provide information on what

will be the effects on it to the students

The teachers, particularly those in Halapitan National High School, will obtain facts and

evidences on what will be the effect on academic performance on senior high students on being an

athlete

The society as a whole would be benefited in such a way that the community would be

enriched and enlightened on the reasons why students want to became an athlete and that being an

athlete was just more than fun. More theories which could help and facilitate better understanding

in physical health.

For the researchers, this study will not only provide better understanding on effects on

academic performance on being an athlete but also may serve as a guide in making a more

scholarly work in the near future.

This study will encourage future researchers to conduct parallel researches by providing

good model that will strengthen their findings and results.

Scope and Delimitation

The study will focus solely on the identification of effects of academic performance on

senior high school student on being an athlete. Whether being an athlete can be good or bad to

their academic performance.

This study will be conducted at Halapitan National High School, Halapitan, San Fernando,

Bukidnon. We are interviewing five students on each strand of Grade 11 students with a total of

20 students, with four (4) strand namely The Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics

(STEM), Accountancy Business Management (ABM), Humanities and Social Sciences

(HUMMS), Technical-Vocational Livelihood – ICT and Cookery, will be involved in the study.

The participants will be the students who will be enrolled in the second semester of school year

2019-2020.
