CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
This chapter presents the background of the study, statement of the problem, the
significance of the study and the scope and delimitation of the study.

We know that participating in sport and physical activity has benefits for health
and wellbeing. New research, bringing together more than 100 studies from around
the world, has found it also has a small positive effect on students’ academic
performance. In every society, one of the main aim of parents and teachers for the
students is to succeed better academically. The factors that affect academic
achievement are complex, including intra-personal, inter-personal, organizational,
community, and environmental variables. For this reason it is important to know the
factors that are likely to have an influence on the students’ academic achievement. Self-
esteem is a key intra-personal variable and parental support is a interpersonalal
variable that affects academic achievement. Many earlier researches have suggested
that sports participation improves mental health which in turn results improved
academic achievement.  With growing research on the positive relationship between
sports participation and academic achievement, more focus on the students’ sports
participation is needed. Several studies have suggested that sports participation,
parental support and self-esteem play a crucial role in determining academic
achievement.

However, we have studied these factors independently, which is insufficient to

make it clear that how sports participation, parental support, self-esteem and academic
achievement interact with each other. The main aim of research in this field is to
understand the mechanisms through which sports participation influences academic
achievement by analyzing the relationship between all of these factors in a single study.
Before this the studies about sports participation and academic achievement 5, parental
support and sports participation 6, self-esteem and sports participation 7, were carried
out in other countries but this is the first study conducted in RSU San Andres Campus,
where the standards of sports are not appropriate according to the requirements 8 and
parental role, educational environment, students sports participation is different from
those countries in which already conducted research.
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Sports involvement and academic success of student-athletes had been a topic of

discussion long time ago Critics observed that participation in sports may reduce the
time available for studying and learning, since students-athletes were having difficulties
in managing their time between hectic schedules of sports training and requirements of
academic subjects. However, sports enthusiasts claimed that sports participation can
motivate student-athletes to achieve harder, raise scholastic ambition, can keep them
attending school, can improve students’ academic grades, develop awareness the
benefits of good health, fitness and exercise, and understanding the spirit of team work,
sportsmanship and camaraderie. In addition, researches showed pieces of evidence
that student participating in sports and physical activities lead to developed mental and
physical alertness, mentally and physically alert students always improved their
performances, accomplished more, and likely to continue attending classes in school.

The main objective of this study is to determine the perception of the students
regarding the support of the school between academic and support activities.
1. To determine the demographic of students toward the school’s support
between academic and sport.

2. To Determine the relationship between respondent and academic

performance?

RATIONALE OF THE STUDY

This study research will be conducted to the student who experience some
negative effect of sports on academic performance. This research will be conducted in
RSU San Andres Campus from January to March 2023.
To describe the effect of the sports on the academic performance of student. This
actively demonstrate that sport participation improved athletes’ perception on academic
excellence, mental processes and becoming more logical and patient. A significant
improvement regarding class attendance of the student-athletes who also noticed.
THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

It aims to have a quality education at the same time to excel in sports and
become known as one of the great schools in terms of education and sports. Meaning,
the support of schools in their sports activities is in a class by itself; proper time
management and consideration to the athletes. According to the study of Montecalbo-
Ignacio et. al. (2017), some critics further believed that there was no possibility that the
student-athletes achieve excellence in sports as well as in academics at the same time.
The present study examined the relationship between sports participation and academic
achievement of thirty-six (36) randomly selected collegiate athletes who participated in
the National State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association Competition. They
were taking up different academic courses. While in the university academic
achievement was measured based on their general weighted average (GWA).
Secondary data on the 1st and 2nd semesters of AY 2014-2016 GWA were used in the
analysis. The results of the study revealed that there was a significant relationship
between sports participation and academic success of the student-athletes. Sports
participation improved athletes' perceptions of academic excellence, mental processes
and becoming more logical and patient. A significant improvement regarding class
attendance of the student-athletes was also noticed.

activities and their colleagues who do not participate in sporting activities at the college
level making 10 respondents. The respondents were drawn from the college level in
RSU San Andres.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

This research paper only focuses on a gender-based study on the perception of
teachers and students regarding the impact of sports on the Academic Achievement of
students at the college level; Educational Attainment. The data collection will be
conducted in RSU San Andres in 2023-2024.The study revealed tha, there is no
statistically significant difference between the performance of student-athletes and non-
student athletes in their subjects. This study, however, concluded that sports
participation has no negative effects on student-athletes’ achievement performance in
their subjects.
