Introduction:
Basketball is a widely enjoyed sport that requires players to possess physical strength,
endurance, and strategic thinking skills. As a collective athletic endeavor, it promotes
collaboration and team cohesion among participants. The primary objective of this study is to
examine the impact of basketball on the academic achievements of student-athletes, with the
overarching aim of proposing practical solutions to address this issue in today's society.
Additionally, we seek to define basketball comprehensively as a sport to ensure readers have a
unified understanding of the context and extent of our research. Through this investigation, we
aim to expand our collective understanding of the correlation between sports and academics,
ultimately making a positive contribution to the field of education. We firmly believe that our
comprehensive research will offer unique insights and support the development of a dynamic
model that promotes the holistic growth of student-athletes.
Through a comprehensive investigation, the aim of this study is to explore the potential
detrimental effects of basketball on academic performance in the student athlete population at
New Era High School.

1. What is the profile of Student-athletes at New Era High School in terms of sex,
grade-level, and strand?
2. Do student-athletes commit their time on sports rather than on their academics?
3. How does the involvement in sports affect the academic performance of
student-athletes?
4. What psychological attributes of student-athletes towards academics?

State the hypothesis:

Null Hypothesis: Student-athletes commit their time to sports rather than on their academics.
Alternative Hypothesis: Student-athletes commit their time to academics rather than to their
sports.
The study delves into the effects of sports on academics, prevention tactics, and potential
problem-solving solutions. Our research endeavors to make a meaningful impact on the lives of
student athletes, by promoting their holistic wellness and enabling them to excel both
academically and athletically. Our ultimate goal is to empower student athletes with the tools
they need to thrive both on and off the court, thus paving the way for their long-term success and
fulfillment.
Review of Related Literature:
Academic achievement in student athletes versus non-student athletes
The academic curriculum is the primary emphasis in a school setting, with extracurricular
activities playing a role in shaping a well-rounded individual. While being a student-athlete is
challenging due to dedicating significant time to sports training instead of studying, this may
ultimately impact academic performance. Nonetheless, sports enthusiasts contend that sports
participation serves as a motivating factor for student-athletes.
The Effects of Participation in Athletics on Academic Performance among High School
Sophomores and Juniors.
The study's researcher observed that the literature examined presented a disparate range
of outcomes. Consequently, the researcher performed an investigation that contributed further
knowledge to the existing literature. After analyzing the collected data, the researcher revealed
that student involvement in athletics led to an increased development of their academic
accomplishments.
Methodology:
This research study is based on quantitative methods, utilizing a descriptive research
design to collect data. The aim is to investigate the impact of basketball on the academic
performance of student-athletes at New Era High School. The researchers will take on the role of
complete observers in this study. A purposive sampling method will be employed to select
participants that best suit the research objectives. Thirty-four student-athletes from New Era
High School were chosen through purposive sampling to participate in the study. Data will be
gathered through a survey conducted via Google Forms, with responses serving as primary data
for analysis. Google Forms' built-in features will aid in analyzing the collected data, with
generated graphs used as a basis for drawing conclusions.
Results:
1. Analysis of the survey data shows that the majority of participants in the study are
Male Student-Athletes, with a large portion belonging to the Senior High School level and
enrolled in the General Academic Strand. 2. Despite their involvement in sports,
Student-Athletes at New Era High School prioritize their academic responsibilities. 3.
Student-Athletes at New Era High School demonstrate a commitment to their academic pursuits,
dedicating significant time to studying and coursework without viewing their athletic activities as
hindrances to their academic success. While the majority do not share the same grade point
average as their teammates, they do not receive special accommodations for sports-related
commitments and do not miss important school events due to their athletic obligations. 4. The
psychological disposition of Student-Athletes towards academics reveals a strong desire for
knowledge acquisition and academic achievement, with most acknowledging a scholastic
advantage compared to non-athletic peers. In light of the research findings, it is advised that the
following groups pay attention to the recommendations provided:
1. Student-Athletes: Aspiring student-athletes looking to partake in the world of
basketball are strongly encouraged to prioritize developing good sportsmanship and mastering
effective time management techniques to balance academic and athletic duties. Excelling in both
areas can lead to a promising future in competitive sports and academic pursuits. 2. Parents:
Supporting children in maintaining a healthy balance between academics and sportsmanship is
paramount. Encouraging children to appreciate sports while ensuring they manage both sports
and academic responsibilities effectively is essential for their overall well-being and success. 3.
Teachers: In their role as educators, teachers play a crucial part in nurturing sportsmanship
qualities in their students. Recommending student participation in sports not only promotes
physical health but also instills important values like teamwork, fairness, and discipline.
Teachers' guidance has a significant impact on students' choices and development. 4. Future
Researchers: Aspiring researchers are urged to explore the insights provided in this study
concerning basketball and consider conducting further research on the concept of sportsmanship
in sports. Expanding upon existing research in this area will contribute to the advancement of
knowledge in sports studies.
Based on our survey results, many student-athletes at New Era High School place a high
value on their academic pursuits in addition to displaying sportsmanship qualities. These results
indicate that a strong dedication to both sports and education can lead to constructive discussions
and favorable outcomes. Despite their focus on sportsmanship, a majority of student-athletes at
New Era High School prioritize their academic goals by dedicating more time to studying and
coursework. By emphasizing the importance of scholarly accomplishments, New Era High
School cultivates a culture of academic excellence that harmonizes with the school's athletic
program. Prioritizing academic pursuits can result in improved outcomes and greater long-term
success. Investing in education is ultimately an investment in oneself, with potentially significant
benefits. The findings suggest that a significant portion of the students surveyed maintain a
positive outlook on sports and perceive it as a complement rather than a hindrance to their daily
routine.
