Influence of Mapua University Senior High School Athletes' Routines to their Academic Performance
Background of the Study:
High school is a pivotal period in a student's life, characterized by not only academic pursuits but also extracurricular activities that contribute to holistic development. Among these extracurricular activities, sports play a significant role in fostering physical fitness, discipline, teamwork, and personal growth. However, the involvement of high school athletes in demanding training schedules, competitive events, and team commitments raises questions about how these rigorous routines influence their academic performance. Mapua University's Senior High School boasts a vibrant and competitive sports program, where dedicated student- athletes participate in a wide range of athletic disciplines. These young athletes are known for their dedication and determination to excel in both sports and academics. However, the intricate balance between these two commitments remains an area of intrigue and concern. The influence of a student-athlete's daily routine on academic achievement, specifically within the context of Mapua University, is a topic that warrants careful investigation. While previous research has explored the relationship between sports participation and academic performance, there is a dearth of studies specifically examining the daily routines and time management strategies employed by student-athletes at Mapua University's Senior High School. Understanding the unique challenges and advantages that student-athletes encounter in their academic journeys is essential for providing targeted support and fostering overall student success. This research seeks to address this gap by delving into the intricate dynamics of the routines followed by senior high school student-athletes at Mapua University. By studying the structure of their daily lives, their commitment to training and competitions, and their academic performance, this study aims to uncover the nuanced ways in which athletic routines intersect with and potentially impact educational pursuits. Moreover, this research will explore the coping mechanisms used by these student-athletes to manage their dual responsibilities and any challenges or stressors they may encounter. The findings of this study have the potential to offer insights that extend beyond Mapua University and can be applied to educational institutions worldwide. The knowledge gained from this research can inform the development of targeted support systems and strategies for student-athletes to optimize their academic and athletic experiences. It is our belief that this study will not only enrich our understanding of the lives of student- athletes but also contribute to the broader discourse on achieving a harmonious balance between sports and academics during the crucial years of senior high school education.
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
In the world of student-athletes, the dual demands of academic and athletic commitments create a unique set of challenges. This review of related literature aims to explore various aspects of student-athlete routines and how they impact academic performance. Three key areas of focus emerge from the literature: sleep patterns, proper nutrition, and time management. According to Anselmo (2021), The responsibilities and pressure placed upon student-athletes to perform well both academically and in sports are significant. It is expected that they prioritize academics while also balancing their athletic responsibilities and workload. As student-athletes balance their academics and athletic responsibilities, they have their own routine to keep up with their task. SLEEP PATTERNS According to the article A Day in the Life of a Student-Athlete (2023), To achieve success in academics and sports, one crucial factor is necessary - sufficient sleep. Lack of sleep can have disadvantages to the student-athlete, Grandner (2023), Poor sleep can have negative impacts on athletes' physical and mental well-being, as well as their academic and athletic performance. TIME MANAGEMENT According to the article Student Athlete Time Management (2022), The significance of time management for student- athletes cannot be exaggerated. Efficient time management prevents students from becoming overwhelmed with daily tasks by allowing them enough time to complete each task. A proper schedule will benefit a student-athlete to finish their task smoothly. PROPER NUTRITION According to Landy (2023), Many people believe that athletic and academic success is mainly determined by motivation, training, and coaching. Although these factors are essential, adequate nutrition is often neglected and undervalued when it comes to achieving success. A recent survey of athletes revealed that 56% of student-athletes do not consider the nutritional content of their food. Without proper nutrition, a student-athlete’s body is unable to provide energy to the muscles and organs that allow for functionality. As a result of not being nutritionally equipped to maintain their energy level, their athletic and academic performance will suffer regardless of how much they keep up with the tasks. In summary, this review of related literature highlights the importance of sleep patterns, proper nutrition, and time management in the routines of student-athletes and their massive impact on academic performance. It underscores the need for comprehensive support systems to help student-athletes succeed in both their athletic and academic pursuits.
Statement of the Problem:
Based on the research gap that was found in the related literatures of this study, the researchers generally aim to determine the influence of routines to the Mapua University senior high school athletes' academic performance. Specifically, this research aims to identify which among of the athletes' routines such as ROUTINE 1, ROUTINE 2, and ROUTINE 3 (It's up to you if you will add more routines based on your RRLs but limit it to 5.) have the significant influence on the senior high school athletes' academic performance. In addition to this, the researchers also desire to delineate the association of each aforementioned routine to the academic performance of the senior high school athletes. In the realm of senior high school education at Mapua University, there exists a unique intersection of academic pursuits and extracurricular commitments, particularly within the sphere of student-athletics. While the benefits of sports participation are well-documented, the intricate relationship between the daily routines of student-athletes and their academic performance remains a complex and underexplored terrain.
Objectives of the Study:
