perspective, there is considerable evidence that sports participation positively

relates to the academic achievement among youth Gerber, 1996; et al as cited

by Amy Rose Cole (2014). The sports context is an important setting in the lives

of the youth. Over 47 million youth participant in organized sports Ewing &

Seedfelt, 2002 as cited by Cole (2014). Since sports are a meaningful context in

which many young people participant, a youth sports team's maybe visible way in

which to promote optimal development.

According to (Tubic; et al 2015) the mechanism which explains the

positive correlation between sports engagement and academic achievement

concerns the effect of academic achievement due to neurohormonal balance and

reduction of boredom, which in turn results in increased attention and

concentration, an increased level of physical activity may additionally be related

to higher self-perception which also affects the fulfillment of school obligations

and thus academic achievement too. A positive correlation between sports

engagement and academic achievement can also be explained in terms of

personality traits developed in a person owning to the sport, which ranges from

emotional stability and motivation for the achievement to integrated functions

such as conscientiousness, responsibility etc. (Tubic, 2013).

With this, the researcher aims to show that there is a need for balance

with regards to the sports and academic life of the student-athletes. In this study,

the researchers provide further discussions and practical suggestions in dealing

with the issue of student-athletes harmonizing their studies and sports demands.

This study, which is conducted at Saint Theresa College of Tandag Inc., will

show the researcher findings, discussions, analysis and conclusions. The result

of this study might help those students that are facing a great challenge in

balancing their time in both areas just to give the same amount of attention to

have a satisfying grade and good performance in their academic and sports

activities.

Theoretical Framework

This study is anchored in E.A Foreman (2013) and KM Matthews (2017) on

Student Athletes Involvement theory, stated that student-athletes' academic

performance has a direct correlation with their involvement level. Student-

athletes' relationship with other students and faculty members has a direct impact

on their overall grade point average.

Sitkowski (2008) the participation of high school sophomores and junior

students in sports activities was held constant as the independent variable to

determine its effect on the grade point average (dependent variable).

The independent variables were comprised of several different sporting

activities the students participated in. the dependent variable of this study was

comprised of several different scores that are received in the different subjects.

5

______________________________________________________________________

Through the grades from the different subjects of the student-athletes, their GPA

was gathered.

Linder (2002) as cited by Prased (2012) discussed the results indicating a

positive relationship between academic achievement and physical activity could

be due to two reasons called the selection hypothesis and the situational

hypothesis. The selection hypothesis states that certain people naturally tend to

be drawn to an active lifestyle and are better in sports and academia. Recent

research by Mustelin et al. (in press) supports this idea as their results suggest

that genetic factors are s significant contributor towards sporting activity levels for

young adults. Therefore biological factors led some people towards a sporting

lifestyle and others towards a more sedentary lifestyle.

On the other hand, the situational hypothesis suggests that parents of

students who do well academically are more lenient towards allowing their child

to participate in sports. Cheung and Chow (2010) discuss the fact that parents

play an important role in their child’s participation or non-participation in sports.

Parents of a ‘low-achieving’ child may be discouraging towards a sporting

lifestyle.

Conceptual Framework

In describing the conceptual framework, the researcher used the input-

process-output model approach system. The first box consists of factors affecting

the academic performance and sports activities of the student-athletes. It may

concern with their time management, practice schedule, class schedule, and

difficulties in doing reports and requirements.

The second box shows the academic performance of the students. This

involves their GPA or they’re grade point average from the first quarter of the first

semester. The last box illustrates the proposed intervention or the alternative

ways proposed by the researchers based on the findings of the study.

Statement of the Problem

Saint Theresa College of Tandag Inc. pursues a good quality of education

as well as enhancing the skills of the students in extracurricular activities. Varsity

players are specifically involved in both areas (academics & extracurricular

activities). This study aims to determine the effects of sports activities towards

the academic performance of the Senior High school varsity players; it also aims

to identify some factors that might contribute in the struggles on how they

balance their studies and practices. This study specifically seeks to answer the

following questions;

1. What is the level of agreement on the factors affecting academic performance

on their sports activities conducted in terms of:

1.1 time management

1.2 practice schedule

1.3 class schedules

1.4 difficulties in doing reports and requirements

8

______________________________________________________________________

2. What is the academic performance/GPA of the respondents?

3. Is there a significant relationship between the factors and the academic

performance of the student-athlete?

4. What intervention can be proposed to the factors affecting the academic

performance of the student-athletes?

Hypothesis

Ho: There is no significant relationship between the factors affecting the

academic performance of the varsity players in sports activities.

Significance of the study

The study is conducted to find out how wide the effect of being involved in

sports activities to the academic performance of the Senior High school varsity

students of Saint Theresa College of Tandag Inc., and to know if extracurricular

activities are considered a hindrance or challenge to execute properly in

academic performance. The result of the study might enlighten some of the

students who view such activities as a waste of time and energy. It is also

beneficial to the Parents of the varsity students that have been supporting their

children financially and emotionally to know their children's concern as well as

the teachers that guides and teaches the students to be more responsible in

every work they are part of. And Future researchers may use this study as a

reference whenever they will conduct a study related to this topic.

Scope and limitation

This study focuses on the factors affecting sports activities to the academic

performance of Senior High School varsity students 2017-2018 of Saint Theresa

College of Tandag Inc., it includes the struggles that the varsity student's faced in

order to execute academic and sports activities fairly to have satisfying grades.

This study is limited to the grade 11 and grade 12 Senior high school students of

Saint Theresa College of Tandag Inc., the researcher doesn’t point out the

specific strand and event of the sports as long as the student is part of the

varsity.

This focuses on the correlation between extracurricular activities and

academic achievement in college students. It stated that there are disadvantages

in joining extracurricular activities in the student's performance, but there is also a

positive impact to the student’s character such as leadership enhancement,

longing self-conceit, and attachment to the institution.

According to a study conducted by Dowling (2008), Franklin (2006; et al)

shows that involvement in sports activities at the college level has an impact on

the academic achievement of the students.

Then, Poh-Sun Seow and Gary Pan (2014) shows extracurricular activities

have become an important component of students’ school life and many schools

have invested significant resources on extracurricular activities.

In addition, (NHSAW, p. 9) shows that involvement in extracurricular

activities affects the academic performance of students. It also provides

opportunities for students to become a lot more responsible and well-rounded

educators equipped with academic skills.

However, according to Pfahler and Staples (2008) shows that there is a

big problem in the sports departments of school in terms of financial issues. It

also cited financial restrictions imposed by school districts’ central offices. It also

says that there are a lot of factors to be considered in school sports budgets such

as travel costs.

According to Myung Hee (2016) that was conducted in the Philippines, it is

stated that extracurricular activities are indeed correlated with academics. The

respondents were 438 students composed of 55% male; 33% were Euro-

American, 25% were African American and 39% were Latino. They are Grades 7

and 8 who undergone an investigation by the researcher about the effects of

participating in two domains of extracurricular activities who involved in sports

and performing arts or club.

In addition, R.L Almerol (2008)to determine the extent of involvement of

college student leaders in extracurricular activities along the areas of religious,

leisure, employment/part-time jobs, socio-political and sports and its influence in

their academic performance. Student leaders from Central Luzon State

University and Nueva Ecija University of Science and Technology were asked to

supply information from a three-part questionnaire. Results revealed that the

student leaders of CLSU were sometimes involved in religious activities and

sports activities while they were never involved in employment/part-time jobs

while for the student leaders of NEUST; they were sometimes involved in

religious and leisure activities, never involved in employment/part-time jobs and

rarely involved in socio-political activities and sports. Correlation analysis proved

that there was a relationship between extracurricular activities and academic

performance. For religious activities, being a church officer proved to have a

positive influence on the college students' grade point average. For leisure

activities, watching television as a traditional leisure activity have strong evidence

connecting to high academic performance while on the other side of leisure, the

involvement of drinking alcoholic drinks has yielded positive results, showing that

the more involvement means lower academic performances.

determine if participation in the collegiate athletes is beneficial to students or if its

disadvantages cover the advantages it gives. October 2013 sixty-even student-

athletes completed a survey to determine the effects of sports activities in the

SDSU’s campus. After the long run, this study found that participation in sports

activities is quite beneficial. It stated that athletes perform better in the

classroom, develop impressive time management skills, and were motivated to

attend classes and experience as a smoother transition into the college lifestyle.

In addition, according to the study conducted (Allen, 2013) in a Malaysian

university. Athletes that consist of 156 hockey players, after using the

socialization scale of the team it was revealed in the survey that there is a

positive relationship between the learning environment in the academic

achievement. The only negative relationship that exists in this study is the

relationship between the support system and the academic achievement of the

athletes.

It was supported in the study conducted by Sitkowski (2018) about the

relationship between the in season and out of season school academic

performance of high school sophomores and juniors in one high school. It was

found that sports participation had a positive impact on academic performance

through an analysis of 249 male and female high school sophomores and juniors.

Sitkowski concluded high school athletes developed self-discipline, self-

confidence, and responsibility. In addition, he found high school athletes often

have lower dropout rates and fewer incidences of alcohol consumption.

In the study conducted by Kapur (2018), there are numerous factors within

the school and outside of school that influence the academic performance of the

students in secondary schools in India. The main areas that have been taken into

account include, factors influencing the academic performance of the students,

academic performance and a large number of student in a class, parental and

associated factors relating to academic achievement, the contribution of school

factors towards the academic performance of the students.

Sports has a great part in the lives of the students in high school all over

the globe, but it is also a factor that gives difficulty in balancing and budgeting

with regards to funding money to sustain the needs of the athletes. These cuts

usually performed in determining the relationship between sports participation

and academic achievement and if it's proven and utilized it would have a strong

observation and argument of the funding. The achievement of athletes was

higher than the student that focuses on the academic performance, but also

athletes lost some time in academic advantages over the course of the study,

meaning that they experienced negative growth due to lack of learning. While

non-participants did experience positive growth for they focus in the academic

performance instead in sports but in their case they lack in the practical

significance.

According to Ignacio et. al (2017), many students believe that once you

enter sports it can help you enhance your skills and health. However, students

who are the focus in their studies believe that sports participation is just a

hindrance to excel in their academic courses and can give hectic schedules

because most of their time is in sports activities such as training to prepare for

the competition instead of studying. Some critics believed that there was no

possibility that the student-athletes achieve excellence in sports as well as in

academics at the same time. This study examined the relationship between

sports participation and academic achievement by randomly selected the thirty-

six (36) collegiate athletes with different academic courses who participated in

the National State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association Competition.

The respondents were measured based on their general average (GWA) that

were used in the analysis as a secondary data on the 1 st and 2nd semesters AY

2014-2016. After conducting the survey, it was revealed that sports participation

and academic has a good relationship in the lives of the student-athletes. It

stated that sports participation improved athletes' perceptions of academic

excellence, mental processes and becoming more logical and patient.

Along with the research with regards to the review of related pieces of

literature and studies that the researcher conducted, all of those added and

widens our knowledge in terms of the relationship that academic and sports

activities had in the student's life. Poh-Sun Seow and Gary Pan (2014) show that

extracurricular activities have become an important component of students'

To sum up, the researchers found the positive impact of sports on the

student's life and the perspectives of some students who are too focus in their

studies why they didn't join such activities. It also shows that joining sports

This chapter presents a description of the research design, research

locale, selection description of respondents, research instruments, data gathering

procedures and statistical treatment used.

Research Design

The researchers used a quantitative method to provide data information of

the study. The quantitative method is used to determine the number of varsity

students who had been struggling in harmonizing both areas and to identify the

academic performance of the respondents through their GPA.

Research Locale

Saint Theresa College of Tandag Inc. is located at corner Magsaysay and

Quezon St., Barangay Bag-ong Lungsod, Tandag City in the Province of Surigao

del Sur. It is a Catholic and the oldest Institution in Tandag City that is composed

of 4 departments namely: Elementary, Junior High School, Senior High School,

and College Department.

Research Respondents

Among the four departments, Senior High School is the chosen

department where the researchers will conduct and gather information. All varsity

students of Senior High school are the respondents of this study, they comprise

of 60 males and females combined. The researchers choose varsity students for

they are the very reason this study is designed.

Sampling Technique

This study will use a universal sampling technique in determining the

samples of the study. Since varsity students comprise of only 60 male and

female combined in the Senior High School Department, the researchers will

make them all as respondents to make it fair. The respondents will be selected in

the classrooms they are involved since not all classrooms have varsity students.

______________________________________________________________________

Research Instrument

The researchers will provide a researcher made questionnaire that will be

distributed to the respondents during the survey. The questionnaire consists of

questions that may help the researchers determine what the respondent's

opinions and experiences regarding the effect of sports activities in their

academic performance and the struggles faced regarding that matter. The

questionnaire is validated by the Physical Education teachers for a reliable

survey questionnaire.

Data Gathering Procedures

Before conducting a survey in the classrooms of the respondents, the

researchers will seek the permission of the principal and the subject teachers of

each classroom using a permission letter to allow the researchers to conduct a

survey.

25
SAINT THERESA COLLEGE OF TANDAG, INC.

______________________________________________________________________

During the survey, the selected respondents will be given a questionnaire

and enough time to answer and understand the questions well. Researchers will

guide the respondents for further clarification.

After conducting, the answer of the respondents will be gathered and

analyzed, it will be divided then tallied based on the answers in the

questionnaire. The study will be tracked 2-3 consecutive days to have enough

time during the conduction and will be able to gather enough information

regarding the study. The answer of the respondents will help the researchers in

reaching the conclusion of the problem.

Statistical Treatment of Data

Since varsity students of Saint Theresa College of Tandag Inc. are only

composed of 60 male and female combined, specifically in Senior High School

Department, the researchers will use universal sampling technique where all

varsity students which are 60 in number will be the respondents of the study.

This study coincides in the study conducted by Sitwoski (2008), in using

GPA to analyze the academic performance of the varsity students. But, the

difference is the current study used GPA to analyze if the varsity students got a

agreement/disagreement of the factors affecting the academic performance of

the respondents, the overall mean of the factors time management, practice

schedule, class schedule and difficulties in doing reports and requirements is

2.80 with an adjectival rating of Neutral. The respondents neither agree nor

disagree about the factors that affect their academic performance. On the survey

conducted by the researchers, only factors’ time management and difficulties in

doing reports and requirements got the lowest mean, meaning the respondents

didn’t give enough attention in managing their time and having difficulties in doing

reports and requirements.

In terms of the academic performance of the respondents, out of 60, there

are 27 respondents got an 85-89 grade point average which is the highest

frequency, the second is 19 respondents out of 60 got a 90-95 grade point

average which is a good one while involving in sports-related activities. While in

terms of the relationship between the level of factors and the academic

performance of the respondents, through the use of the Pearson correlation, the

results show that there is no significant relationship between the two.

Conclusion

Based on the findings, factors such as time management, practice

schedule, class schedule and difficulties in doing reports and requirements

cannot affect the academic performance of the student-athletes; the academic

performance and factors are both independent variables. This means there is no

relationship between the two. Based on the survey, most of the student-athletes

got an 85-89 grade point average. With this, the researchers conclude that the

academic performance of the student-athletes cannot be affected while they

engage to any sports activities; the grades of the said respondents depends

upon his/her determination and perseverance to pass his/her academics whether

how difficult to surpass the following factors. The maintenance of time

management is very important to balance tasks, time management is one of the

factors but also an alternative way to have a smooth day ahead and no more

“catching up”.

Recommendation

Based on the gathered data and findings, the researchers’ suggest the

proposed tips given in Breaking Muscle Page to help varsity students balance

their academics and sports related activities; and will serve as an intervention for

their difficulties. Also to enhance time management and difficulties in doing

reports and requirements since these two factors have the lowest attention from

the student-athletes.

First of the tips is Manage your time. With competing demands placed on

your time, you must plan your known time schedule. Known times are school

time, game and practice time. By blocking this known time on your calendar, you

can determine your actual homework time and study time. Second, Plan your

week. Look at your calendar and note when you have projects due, tests

scheduled, practice and game scheduled. Plan how will you study and when you

will study. Third, Do not procrastinate. Do assignments, projects, reports etc. as

soon as they are given, rather than waiting until the last minute. And lastly, Use

your weekends and free time wisely. Serves’ as preparation time for the week

ahead.
