INTRODUCTION

Rationale

Sports engagement and physical activity have long been acknowledged as crucial

elements of a balanced education. Sports have been connected to a number of psychological

and cognitive benefits, including higher self-esteem, improved teamwork abilities, and increased

discipline, in addition to their obvious advantages for physical health. The potential impact of

sports involvement on academic performance, however, is an intriguing facet of the sports-

education nexus that continues to intrigue scholars, educators and politicians alike (Malm,

2019).

While anecdotal evidence and widespread perceptions frequently imply that

participating in sports can improve academic achievements, the empirical evidence for this

claim is still mostly fragmented and context-dependent. The type and degree of athletic

involvement, a person's personality, and the educational environment are just a few of the many

factors that might affect how well a student performs academically. Therefore, taking into

account the various elements at play, it is essential to conduct a thorough examination into the

perceived effects of participating in sports on academic performance (Singleton, 2019).

Through the use of rigorous methodology, this quantitative research project aims to fill in

any gaps in the literature by determining how students view the influence of their participation in

sports on their academic success. We hope to learn important things about students'

impressions of the relationship between athletics and academic success by concentrating on

their subjective perceptions. Additionally, in order to provide a more nuanced view of the
intricate interactions between sports and education, this study will examine variances in

these beliefs across other demographic and sports-related aspects (White, 2021).

This study aims to provide empirically supported insights that might guide

educational policies and practices in light of the ongoing discussion about the

significance of encouraging physical activity and holistic development among students.

We want to provide a useful resource for educators, parents, and policymakers to make

informed decisions about integrating sports into the educational experience by

explaining the perceived effects of sports involvement on academic success

(Hammond, 2020).

Research Objective

The exact purpose of this study should be to determine the perceived effect of sports

participation on academic performance of Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Colleges-Marbel , Inc

officially enrolled in School Year 2023-2024 as basis for intervention plan.

Specifically, it aimed to achieve the following objectives:

1. To determine the perceived effect of sports participation

1.1 Lifestyle

1.2 Physical Health

1.3 Skill Development

2. To determine the academic performance

1.1 Grades

3. To determine the significant relationship between the perceived effect of sports

participation and academic performance.

Review of Related Literature

SPORTS PARTICIPATION

Where children live, learn, and play affects how frequently they engage in physical

activity, a health behavior. Children engage in physical activity in both indoor and outdoor

environments that are supervised by adults. There are variances in youth sport involvement

based on age, sex, and socioeconomic background, yet youth sport provides a possible setting

for physical exercise (Kellstedt, 2021).

In the past ten years, topics like insufficient physical exercise, sedentary behavior, and

mental health difficulties have gotten a lot of attention. This systematic review and meta-

analysis's objectives were to study the effects of treatments aimed at reducing sedentary or

physically inactive behavior at school on the mental health of children and adolescents and to

pinpoint the characteristics of successful programs (Andermo, 2020).

Physical activity and health appear to be positively correlated, according to decades of

studies. However, the majority of studies that looked into this relationship focused on health

markers such as the lack of sickness or infirmity. Many times, nothing is known about the

connection between physical activity and beneficial health-related notions like subjective well-

being (Buecker,2021). The purpose of this study was to examine whether regular exercise

participation differed between middle-aged and older adults, as well as whether the advantages

of regular exercise varied between middle-aged and older adults in terms of health capacity,

depressive or anxiety symptoms, and level of life satisfaction (Cho, 2020).

Independent of the type of team sport, age, somatic, or mental health issues, there is

persistent evidence that playing team sports is linked to increased social and psychological

health. The results suggest that team sports may be more effective than individual sports in

promoting health and assuring participation in and continuation of exercise. However, due to

their inherently competitive nature, care must be given when using team sports for health-

related goals (Andersen, 2019).

Participating in sporting activities fosters social and personal growth as well as cognitive

function and mental wellness. Further research on the advantages of sports for brain health and

performance will surely reveal new insights and opportunities for maximizing human potential as

our understanding of the brain develops (Fadare,2023).

Physical activity (PA) has been shown in numerous studies to improve both physical and

mental health. PA levels must rise throughout all age groups, but especially in children and

adolescents, if sustainable development goals are to be attained. But young people's physical

inactivity is dramatically increasing, in part because of a surge in school-related sedentary

behaviors (Barbosa 2020).

ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE

Academic, professional, or athletic achievement activities and the successes and

failures they result in are all associated with achievement feelings also known as activity

emotions and outcome emotions. The motivational, self-control, and cognitive processes that

are essential for academic performance are reportedly linked to achievement feelings,

according to recent research. Even though these feelings are significant, there aren't many

analyses of actual data looking into how they relate to academic performance (Camacho,2021).
Passion and identity may be related, and they may influence results outside the realm of

success, according to theoretical and empirical evidence. The primary goal of this study was to

determine whether academic identity and athletic variables—athletic identity, harmonious

enthusiasm for sport, and obsessive passion for sport—can predict academic achievement and

perseverance. Student-athletes (N = 187) were used as a sample. The second goal was to find

out if these relationships are the same regardless of sex or first-generation status. Academic

identity positively and athletic identity negatively predicted academic results (Yukhymenko,

2022).

Physical activity (PA) is well established to be important for maintaining mental health

and preventing chronic disease. Physical activity should begin in childhood and adolescence

because those who participate in more sports and PA during this time have better mental health

and a greater chance of reducing cardiovascular diseases, osteoporosis, and obesity later in

life. Several studies have been conducted in the recent years to provide empirical evidence of

this phenomenon, and they have all reached the same conclusion: physical activity should start

in these age groups (Berki, 2022).

A useful tool for assessing learning in a university setting might be academic

performance. In this regard, a number of elements have been emphasized as significant

predictors of academic performance. First and foremost, physical activity is considered to be a

crucial component that may have a significant impact on academic performance because prior

studies have shown improvements in a variety of cognitive abilities, including execution,

decision-making, perception, concentration, and memory, all of which would benefit from regular

activity practice (Redondo, 2022).

Although the terms academic performance and academic success" are frequently used,

neither concept has a clear or widely accepted definition (York, 2015). Grades obtained and the
grade point average (GPA) derived from these grades are employed as indicators of academic

performance in the United States and many other nations (Ahin, 2018). Investigating factors that

might have a good or negative effect on college students' academic success is crucial because

the knowledge gleaned can be utilized to enlighten students about these aspects and empower

them to make decisions that limit negative choices and increase positive ones (Reuter, 2021).

The claim that regular, high-quality physical education will hinder intellectual

advancement is one that opponents of prepubescent children's physical education programs

frequently encounter. Thus, the effect of daily physical education on primary school pupils'

academic performance is examined, paying particular attention to research done in Vanves

(France), Australia, and Trois Rivières (Québec). Learning appears to go more quickly per unit

of classroom time when a significant percentage of the curriculum (14–26%) is devoted to

physical activity, and academic achievement matches and sometimes even exceeds that of

control kids (Shephard, 2023).

The analysis of the elements influencing students' academic success as well as the

forecast and justification of academic performance are of the utmost importance in higher

education. Due to considerable changes at the social and educational levels, the college years

may be a difficult time. Students exhibit a variety of lifestyles, including different food habits and

levels of physical exercise. The most important lifestyle adjustments were eating more snacks in

between meals and spending a lot of time on computers and smartphones for amusement

rather than exercising. As a result, obesity becomes a more serious issue among university

students, which undoubtedly has an adverse effect on undergraduates' health results (Alhazmi,

2021).
Theoretical Framework

This extensive research study will examine the effects of social reinforcement

and observational learning in educational settings, seeking to understand how students'

academic performance is influenced by the behaviors, attitudes, and outcomes of

others. The theory of social learning, developed by Bandura and published in (1977),

postulates that individuals acquire new knowledge and skills by observing and modeling

the behaviors, attitudes, and outcomes of others.

This extensive study, which aims to examine how students' academic

performance is influenced by the development of their self-identity and the resolution of

psychosocial crises at various life stages, emphasizes the interconnectedness between

their psychosocial growth and their scholastic achievements, and is based on Erikson's

Psychosocial Development Theory. A leading and important theory of development was

created by ego psychologist Erikson. Erikson's theory focused more on psychosocial

than psychosexual development, despite the influence of psychoanalyst Sigmund

Freud's work.
Conceptual Framework

Figure 1 shows that the Independent Variable are Perceived effect of sports participation

and the Dependent Variable is the Academic Performance. The perceived effect of sports

participation refers to the individual's subjective experience and beliefs about the impact of

engaging in sports activities. This perception can vary widely from person to person and can

encompass both positive and negative effects. Academic performance refers to a student's

success and achievements in an educational setting, typically measured through various

assessments, grades, and evaluations. It reflects how well a student has acquired knowledge,

skills, and competencies in a specific academic context.

METHOD

This chapter describes the research design, research method, participants, and

instruments for analyzing the data and statistical treatment.

Research Design

This study was utilized descriptive-correlation design. This research combined a

quantitative approach and descriptive method. Creswell (2012) describes that quantitative

approach is used if the researchers want to identify a research problem based on the trends in

the field or on the need to explain why something occurs. This research is classified into

descriptive research with correlation method. According to Creswell (2012) correlation research

design, investigators use the correlation statistical test to describe and measure the degree of

association or relationship between two or more variables or set of scores.

Research Locale

The study took place in Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Colleges - MarbelIncorporated. It

is located in Purok Waling-Waling, Arellano Street, Zone ll, City of Koronadal City, Province of

South Cotabato, 9506, Philippines. The school was created in the year 2008 and known to be

the “ Home of the Best”. The school offer different courses like Bachelor of Elementary

Education major in General Science, Bachelor of Secondary Education major in English,

Science, Filipino, Physical Education and Mathematics, Bachelor of Science Business

Technology, Bachelor of Science in Social Work, Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and English,

Bachelor of Science in Accountancy, Bachelor of Science in Accounting Information System and

lastly, Associate in Computer Technology.

Population and Sample

Simple sampling was utilized study due to time constraints and the availability of the

respondents due to class schedule. The respondents of this study were the total enumeration

fifty (50) of Bachelor of Physical Education students officially enrolled this school year 2023 –

2024 at Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Colleges - Marbel Incorporated.

Simple Sampling is a probability sampling technique in which researchers randomly

select individuals from a population. All individuals in the population have an equal chance of

getting chosen. This strategy produces unbiased, representative samples (Jim , 2022).

The questionnaire checklist included questions to measure the perceived effect of sports

participation on academic performance of Bachelor of Physical Education students of Ramon

Magsaysay Memorial Colleges - Marbel Incorporated as basis for intervention program. The

researchers provide study-related questions in the survey, which the respondents should

accurately answer. The first step is for respondents to respond to the questionnaire on the

benefits of playing traditional games of the respondents using the four-point scale: 4 (Strongly

Agree), 3 (Agree), 2 (Disagree), 1 (Strongly Disagree).

Data Collection

For the accomplishment of the study, the following procedures: In determining the
students' respondents, the researchers gathered data regarding the number of Bachelor of

Physical Education in Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Colleges - Marbel Incorporated. The

researcher will form the instrument, and the experts will validate the instrument. The researcher

asks permission through a letter from the school Head to allow the researcher to conduct the

survey. As soon as permission to, the researcher informed consent, and the respondents

allowed the researcher to gather information. She conducted the survey questions for them. The

researcher encouraged the respondents to answer the questionnaire faithfully to whatever

question, and she assured them of data privacy. The researcher also did the retrieval of data.

After the retrieval, the researcher used the Likert scale to solve the data gathered from the

respondents. The researchers look for a statistician who will help her analyze and interpret

results.

Statistical Treatment of Data

This study utilized statistical tools to treat the gathered data. A weighted mean was

used to determine the perceived effect of sports participation on academic performance of

Bachelor of Physical Education in Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Colleges - Marbel Incorporated.

Ethical Consideration

The importance of research ethics in completing the research by appropriate research

guidelines cannot be overstated. In order to maintain the study's ethical standards, enough time

is given to the respondents so they can describe their knowledge of the research issues.

Respondents were advised that participation in the study is entirely voluntary and that they can

decline. The information was collected via a survey questionnaire. As a result, the responders'

privacy is strictly protected. Respect for the respondent's self-worth is also ranked first. The

privacy of those who participate in the study, individuals and organizations, is likewise
protected. On the other hand, any conversation relating to the research should be conducted

with honesty and clarity.
