Animal Farm by George Orwell

Chapter VI

Animals rebuilt the windmill and collect food. Napoleon hired a Human to assist him in conducting
trade on behalf the farm. Some pigs are discovered sleeping in beds and they rewrite the
commandments arguing that the pigs need comfortable repose in order to think clearly and serve
the greater good of the farm. The windmill was destroyed and Napoleon blamed Snowball to be
responsible for it and passed a death sentence on him, offering a bushel of apples to the traitor’s
killer.

Comparison

In this chapter the analogy falls to the justification of the luxuries of the ruling class, as the pigs sleep
in beds as humans, it was part of the Soviet Russian government but also part of different
governments around the world. Napoleon blamed on Snowball alluding to how the governments
popularize some ideas or enemies to hide certain issues and control the population.

Chapter VII

In winter food run out in the farm and Napoleon contracted to sell eggs breaking Old’s Major’s
original complaint about human egg selling, some hens rebelled and he cut her rations. Some
animals were forced by Napoleon to confess to their participation in a conspiracy with Snowball and
finally killed by the dogs. The song “Beast of England” was replaced for a new one written by
Minimus the poet pig.

Comparison

In this chapter the analogy falls to how Napoleon exerts his power using the force of the dogs against
some animals’ rebellion as in some cases governments use military force to keep control of people
it was something commonly applied during Stalin’s government and still remains in our days.

Chapter VIII

After the slaughter the animals discovered that the commandment “No animal shall kill any other
animal” changed into: “No animal shall kill any other animal without cause.” Napoleon took the title
of “Leader” and sold a pile of timber to Mr. Fredrick but he paid with fake money and attacked the
farm killing several animals. The next morning animals discovered a changed in another
commandment “No animal shall drink alcohol” read “No animal shall drink alcohol to excess”.

Comparison

In this chapter Napoleon was perverted the truth of was going on in the farm and he used the
original ideas of the commandments to have the animals under his control but changing them to his
own convenience, as Stalin used Karl Marx’s ideas to justify tyranny.
Chapter IX

Elder animals received reduced food rations except pigs and dogs. Napoleon begins ordering events
called Spontaneous Demonstrations, at which the animals march around the farm, listen to
speeches, and exult in the glory of Animal Farm. The government declared the farm a republic and
Napoleon became President being the only candidate in a unanimous vote. Boxer collapsed and sent
to a glue maker to be slaughtered then Napoleon gave a speech in praise of him.

Comparison

In this chapter’s pigs and dogs received less feed than the rest of the animals, remaining the
increasing luxuries of the ruling class and Demonstrations is seen as a way to keep control through
the speech of Napoleon, thus, Orwell is referring to the period of the Russian Revolution.

Chapter X

Years passed by and the animals complete a new windmill which was used not for generating
electricity but for milling corn. The farm seemed to have grown richer, but only the many pigs and
dogs live comfortable lives. Squealer and Napoleon started walking upright and there was a change
in the rest of the commandments “Four legs good, two legs better!” and “All animals are equal but
some animals are more equal than others”. The other animals, led by Clover, watched through a
window as Mr. Pilkington and Napoleon toast each other in a card game, then the animal realized
that they could no longer distinguish which of the cardplayers were pigs and which are human
beings.

Comparison

In this chapter finally the pigs became identical to humans consolidating a new totalitarianism as in
the Soviet Russia Stalin and the communist became identical to the aristocrats they replaced and
the western capitalist they denounced.
