In HONG KONG and MACAO

Trip to Hong Kong

 Rizal left Manila for Hong Kong on board the Zafiro


 Rizal did not get off the ship when it made brief stop over at Amoy on Feb 7. For three reasons:
1. He was not feeling well
2. It was raining hard, and
3. He heard that the city was dirty
 During his stay in Hong Kong, Rizal wrote a letter to Blementritt , dated February 16 , expressing
his bitterness and describing Hongkong as a small but very clean city.
 Rizal stayed at Victoria Hotel. He welcomed by Jose Maria Basa, Balbino Mauricio, and Manuel
Yriarte.
 Jose Sainz de Veranda - a spaniard who shadowed Rizal's movement in Hong Kong.

Visit to Macao

 Rizal accompanied by Basa, boarded ferry steamer kiu-kiang for macao (feb 18)
 Rizal and Basta stayed at the house of Don Francisco Lecaros, a Filipino gentleman married to a
Portuguese lady.
 Rizal visited theatre, casino, cathedral and churches, pagodas, botanical garden, and bazaars.
He also saw the Famous Grotto of Camoens, Portugal's national poet.
Feb 19 - he witnessed a catholic procession
Feb 20 - Rizal and Basa returned to Hong Kong

Experience in Hong Kong

1. Noisy celebration of the Chinese New Year which lasted from February 11th to 13th
2. He also observed the boisterous Chinese theater
3. Marathon Lauriat party, which was the longest meal in the world
4. The Dominican Order was the richest religious order in Hong Kong.It engaged actively in
business.It owned more than 700 houses for rent and many shares in foreign banks.It had
millionsof dollars deposited in banks which earned fabulous interest
5. He observed the cemeteries in Hong Konh
 Protestant - was the most beautiful because of its well-groomed plants and clean pathways.
 Catholic cemeter - was most pompous, with its ornate and expensive mausoleums and
extravagantly carved sepulchers.
 Muslim cemetery - was the simplest, containing only a little mosque and tombstone with Arabic
inscription.

Departure from Hong Kong to Japan

February 22, 1882 - Rizal left Hong Kong on board the Oceanic, an American steamer.
