A compressor is a device used to increase the pressure of a compressible fluid. The inlet pressure level can be any value from deep vacuum to a high positive pressure. The discharge pressure can range from sub-atmospheric levels to high values In the tens of thousands of pounds per square inch. A centrifugal compressor is a “dynamic” machine. It has a continuous flow of fluid whuch receives energy from integral shaft impellers. This energy is transformed into pressure partly across the impellers and partly in the stator section. The centrifugal compressor accomplished the function of compressing a gas between required pressure levels by adding energy to the gas as it passes through it. This energy is imparted by the I peller blades, increasing the velocity and the static pressure of the fluid. The gas, which is drawn into the eye of the impeller and leaves at its periphery, enters a vaned or vaneless diffuser at high velocity and is retarded, trabsforming most of that kinetic energy into additional static pressure.
