1. Explain the following forms of energy: biomass, wind energy and solar energy

Biomass Energy is what is obtained from organic compounds through natural processes
The term biomass refers to solar energy, converted into organic matter by vegetation,
which can be recovered by direct combustion or by transforming that matter into other
fuels, such as alcohol, methanol or oil.

Biogas, similar to natural gas composition, can also be obtained from organic waste.
2. Wind power. Wind energy is a renewable energy source that uses the force of wind
to generate electricity. The main means to obtain it are the wind turbines, “windmills” of
variable size that transform with their vanes the kinetic energy of the wind into
mechanical energy.

.3 Solar energy is what comes to Earth in the form of electromagnetic radiation (light,
heat and ultraviolet rays mainly) from the Sun, where it has been generated by a nuclear
fusion process. ... The photovoltaic conversion consists of the direct transformation of
light energy into electrical energy.

1. Look for the energy matrix of Colombia and one of a developed country,
whichever you prefer,
a. Explain the composition of the Colombian energy matrix, especially in
relation to alternative energies.
b. Explain the energy matrix of the other country that you investigated
c. Make a comparison about the two matrices

a. Colombia has one of the cleanest power generation matrices in the world.
Of its installed capacity, 68% corresponds to hydraulic generation, 30% to thermal
generation (13.3% with natural gas, 78% liquid fuels, 9.5 with carbon)
and approximately 1% with Non-Conventional Renewable Energy Sources (FNCER)
(wind, solar, and biomass)

Colombia possesses itself as one of the countries with the greatest global and Latin
American water wealth, hence it has a clean electric power generation matrix since it is
composed of a natural resource such as water and at the same time less polluting with
respect to others Energy matrices worldwide. Colombia has the resources to boost
alternative energy, but only takes advantage of 30%. At the moment, the largest source
of wind energy in the Guajira is being promoted, the bet is an energy generating park
capable of supplying the installed capacity of electric energy in the country.
Regarding alternative energy, Colombia has defined policies that permanently ensure
the supply of electricity and is to encourage and give more impetus to the development
of projects for generating electricity through non-conventional renewable sources
(FRNC), in order to migrate towards an increasingly clean, diversified, competitive and
resilient energy matrix to the climatic variability of the country.

b. The US energy matrix is among the largest in the world and is characterized by being
quite diversified.

Although it is one of those with the highest installed capacity of renewable energies,
among which hydroelectric and wind power stand out

The US energy matrix has an internal energy deficit. This phenomenon began to occur
in the mid-50s, and that is how in 2008, 26% of the total energy consumed by the
country came from external sources. The US electricity matrix consists of generators
focused on the production and commercialization of electric energy, as well as
multisectoral generators, which use energy in part of their processes, and form a minor
part of the generation.

In general, fossil fuels continue to dominate the generation of electricity in the United
States. But the shift from coal to natural gas has helped reduce carbon dioxide
emissions and other pollution.
But experts warn that a change to natural gas alone will not be enough to curb
emissions and avoid dangerous global warming.

C, Both the United States and Colombia have clean energy matrices and focus on
Colombia more exactly the sixth.
The two countries have focused on implementing and innovating in renewable energies,
the difference between Colombia and the United States is that it leads us by the
technology focused on wind, solar, natural gas and oil. Colombia is a bit more vulnerable
since its energy resource is based specifically on the water sources that are threatened
with climate change. Our country must focus on the resources that it has such as the
sun, oil, wind and natural gas and take advantage of them in the best way its mission is
the modernization and transformation of the energy matrix in which the United States
takes us certain advantage using these alternative energies.
3 Celsia and being Colombia companies are pioneers and promote the diversification of
the energy matrix by implementing alternative renewable energies such as solar and
wind.
They have installed capacity of 2398 MW and have different technologies for different
energy generations such as: Hydraulics 1228 MW, thermal 1086 MW, wind 49.5 MW
and solar 34.36 MW. The energy generated goes to a station where the voltage rises to
take it to the transmission line that leads to homes.
Departments such as Valle del Cauca, Bolivar, Santander, Cesar, Panama, Acacias,
Minas in Colon and La Guajira benefit from cheaper costs. The communities located
around these generating plants are not affected because they are clean renewable
energy with positive effects because they contribute to sustainable development, do not
emit greenhouse gases, or other harmful emissions that can affect health and the
environment.
The alternative energies such as solar and wind that are the resource of these
companies do not affect fauna or flora, are friendly and responsible with the environment
since they do not increase global warming.

Biogas is a fuel that is generated from the fermentation or biodegradation of organic

matter; It is obtained by placing organic waste in a special biodigester, which
encapsulates the gases (mostly methane) so that it can be used later in the home and
even the industry. Biogas has been called swamp gas.
Within renewable energies we find the almost unknown biogas. Biogas is an alternative
energy composed mainly of carbon dioxide and methane generated by the
biodegradation of biomass, obtained from organic matter in an environment devoid of
oxygen.
Colombia bets on biogas since it has large amounts of organic waste in the urban area
and bets on implementing it in the rural area to cover energy needs in a clean and
economical way.
