CLASSIFICATION OF AGGREGATES ON BASIS ON SHAPE AND

TEXTURE

The external characteristics of aggregate, in particular the particle shape and

surface texture, are of importance with regard to the properties of fresh and
hardened concrete.
Roundness measures the relative sharpness or angularity of the edges and
corners of a particle. The actual roundness is the consequence of the strength and
abrasion resistance of a parent rock and the amount of wear to which the particle
has been subjected.

CLASSIFICATION ON THE SHAPE OF PARTICLE

CLASSIFICATION DESCRIPTION EXAMPLE
Rounded Fully water worn or completely shaped River or seashore
by attrition gravel; desert,
seashore and
windblown sand
Irregular Naturally irregular, or partly shaped by Other gravels; land
attrition and having rounded edges or dug flint

Flaky Material of which the thickness is small Laminated rock

relative to the other two dimensions

Angular Possessing well defined edges formed at Crushed rocks of all

the intersection of roughly planar faces types ; talus ;
crushed slag
Elongated Material usually angular in which the -
length is considerably larger than the
other two dimensions
Flaky and Material having length considerably -
Elongated larger than the width , width
considerably larger than the thickness

CLASSIFICATION ON THE BASIS OF TEXTURE

SURFACE CHARACTERISTICS EXAMPLES
TEXTURE

Glassy Conchoidal fracture Black flint , vitreous

slag

Smooth Water worn or smooth due to fracture of Gravel, Chert , Slate,

laminated or fine grained rock Marble, some
Rhyolites
Granular Fracture showing more or less uniform Sandstone , oolite
rounded grains

Rough Rough fracture of fine or medium Basalt , Felsite ,

grained rock containing no easily visible porphyry , limestone
crystalline constituents
Crystalline Containing easily visible crystalline Granite , Gabbro ,
constituents Gneiss

Honeycombed With visible pores and cavities Brick , Pumice ,

foamed slag , Clinker ,
Expanded Clay

The shape and texture of aggregate, especially of fine aggregate have a

strong influence on the water requirement of the mix. In particular terms, more
water is required when there is a greater void content of the loosely packed
aggregate.
In coarse aggregate, flakiness and shape of the coarse aggregate have an
appreciable effect on the workability of concrete, the workability decreasing with
an increase in the angularity number
