Closing the Digital Divide

Many companies are working to close the digital divide. Microsoft is planning to use a

technology known as white spaces, unused broadcasting frequencies in the wireless spectrum, to

help close the digital divide. The white spaces would use unused channels on television

broadcast to cover long distances in mostly rural areas where fast internet service may not exist.

Another technology that the cable industry has been pushing people to use to close the

digital divide are broadbands. Broadbands provide high-speed Internet access and has several

technologies that are included, which are, cable modems, fiber, wireless, satellite, broadband

over power lines, and digital subscriber lines. Cable companies are providing low-cost services

and offering programs to help those who need it, to become familiar with the technology world.
