Technology to Close the Divide

A new tool to help close the digital divide is an interactive broadband map. This was introduced by the
chairman of the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) to help the public understand the location of
the broadband gaps. Consumers can view, “at the home page, or on the Location Summary tab, and
have the map show them the area and display a list of providers reporting service.” This helps
policymakers become aware of areas where broadband connectivity is limited.

Microsoft is using a new technology to improve connectivity and lessen the digital divide. Microsoft is
going to begin using “white space” technology, which utilizes the unused channels between television
broadcasts. This technology uses low-powered television channels to cover vast distances and had has
the capability to penetrate concrete walls. This will increase the internet speeds of those in rural areas
who have slower connection speeds.
