Is the paper organized into paragraphs? Do the paragraphs
have a topic sentence and supporting material? Are the
paragraphs in a logical sequence and linked together so the
writing makes a coherent whole?

Are claims backed up with appropriate warrants (i.e.,
citations)? If direct quotes are used, are they integrated
smoothly (and grammatically) into the text? Has the author
quoted too much, sacrificing her/his own voice in the
process? Has the author quoted too much, including
superfluous material that diffuses rather than reinforces the
point being made? Are citations sufficiently specific to allow
the reader to easily locate the source?

Are the vocabulary choices appropriate for an academic
audience? Is the tone sufficiently “serious,” yet at the same
time direct, honest, and unpretentious? Are the language
choices inviting and engaging for the reader?
