Student with ASD (Autistic Spectrum Disorder)

1. Definition
Student with ASD (Autistic Spectrum Disorder) is a student with developmental disability that
affects his/her to respond to the environment behaviorally, socially, and communicatively.

2. Characteristic
The characteristic of student with ASD are:
- Having problem with social interaction with others including talking, working, and playing
with others.
- Having unusual emotional reactions and expression
- Having unusual interest in objects, children with ASD may play with the toys in different or
unusual ways. For example, children may sit for hours spinning the wheel on a toy vehicle.
- Having need for sameness, children with ASD may have difficulty with changes in routines,
food, clothes, and other parts of their environment.
- Having great ability in one area and great difficulty in another. For example, student with
ASD may be difficult to hold a pencil but have a strong memory to memorize the words or
song.
- Having unusual strong reaction to one or more five sense. For example, most of the
students may be bothered with loud noises, but student with ASD may have stronger
reaction to it such as screaming or even crying.

3. The implication in the classroom


The things that can be done by the teacher when having student with ASD are:
- ASD students perform well when they participate in routine and repetitive activities.
However, when the routine changes, it may make them difficult to adapt with it that also
may lead to another problem such as academic or mood. As the result, the teacher may help
the students to cope with the changes by reminding about the change.
- The teacher may give space for the students to do sensory reaction to the environment.
- The teacher may adopt strategies to reduce student’s anxiety including protect them from
teasing during unstructured time and also increase the other students’ awareness about
that difference.
