CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Bullying is a serious and widespread phenomenon. It usually happens everywhere and it

became a very serious problem inside the campus. It is important for students to be constantly

reminded about the implication of bullying to the life of bully and the bullies along with its

consequences that bullying can have on themselves and others for them to realize how bullying

really change one’s life.

The student is characterized as being bullied or victimized when he or she is exposed,

repeatedly and over time, to negative actions on the part of one or more other students (Olweus,

1993). Students at Dangcagan National High School usually experiencing this kind of

phenomenon to which considered as a non-stop issue or problem. There are different kinds of

bullying that really exist in Dangcagan National High School. As what we observed, the

common type of bullying that usually students experienced is the verbal and physical type

bullying. Verbal bullying is when most of the student experiencing it through their co-student

base on their physical appearance, name calling and non-stop teasing that make someone so

upset. On the other hand, physical bullying usually happen because of misunderstandings,

insecurities, and showing off that they are strong enough and no one can beat them. In this

situation we are able to recognize how bullying implicates the life of the student.

Bullying is a form of aggressive behavior manipulated by the use of force to affect other,

particularly when the behavior is habitual and involves an in balance of power. Bullying has

been criticized with its different types in which all of it affects and has its own impact to the life

of the students in several ways. According to the article, Olweus (1994) explored that bullies can

be characterized by a high potential of general aggressiveness. They attack in one way or

another, not just their victims, but also their teachers, parents and siblings. They display more

positive attitudes toward aggression than students in general and then the victims. Bullying
constitute a complex problem in school especially to the lives of the students. It is a problem that

affects all students, either bullies or victims, and those who attended interpersonal violence.

Bullying may involve many sections verbal, physical assaults, threats, jokes or language, and

criticizing. All of such factors affect individually, or collectively, and contributes to child’s

bullying. It is well known that bullying is difficult to eliminate or to stop in schools because it is

used by students. Alison (2016) stated that bullying is considered as global problem that affect

emotional, social, and physical well-being of school-age children to their schools.

There are also some other sort of topic about bullying but we are focusing on its

implication of bullying to the life of the bully and the bullied. According to other expert bullying

really affects everyone’s lives-those who are bullied, those who bully, and those who witness

bullying. But the people who are really affected of bullying are those people who are bullied.

Bullying is linked into many negative outcomes as bullying is considered as a common form of

violence in school. Various studies indicates that bullying makes schools to be come on unsafe

place (Maliki et al., 2009).

Shafqat (2015, p. 45) argued that bullying in schools occurs in any place either in school

building or around school building and may occur in bathrooms, in and out of classes, in social

media which may require group work or after school activities. School bullying is a widespread

issue that affects school students in many parts of their lives such as; psychologically,

educationally and emotionally. Sekol and Farrington (2016) found that bullies, compared to non-

bullies have been bullied before the reason why bullying is very rampant inside the campus and

continue spreading without even stopping.

Bullying at school affects academic achievement since bullied children feel fear and weak

and in the same time it affects students’ personality traits and self-confidence. Therefore such situation

makes bullied students unable to follow or to pay attention for their study well and even they

might do not like to go to school. Moreover, they miss opportunities to participate with their

discussion or even enjoy school activities. Many researchers’ (foundies.ccsenet.org International

Education Studies Vol. 10, No. 6; 201745) Found that there is a strong relationship between

bullying academic achievements; Students lose concentration when they are attending their

classes and lose of interest in attending classes.

For these reasons, this study attempts to illustrate how bullying affect the academic

performance or achievement of the students in Dangcagan National High School in every year

level. Also to know what are the causes of bullying, why bullying exist inside the campus. The

people see how students emotionally, physically, mentally, socially, and academically affected

by bullying. While all of these aspects are equally important to the well-being of a student, this

research study is going to specifically examine the causes and effects of well-being bullying

haveon academic success.

Statement of the Problem

This research aimed to know the implication of bullying to the life of the students through

having an interview to the bully and to the bullied. In which the life of the students is hindered

by bullying. Students in Dangcagan National High School are mostly affected by bullying each

day. The following were the formulated research questions:

1. What are the different types of bullying and how does its effects to the students?

2. Why it is important to cease bullying, does bullying affect students’ performance in

schools?

3. What should students do if someone tries to bully them?

Significance of the Study

The significance of this study is to understand the collected information on

the main reason why students bully each other. Also, we are looking the picture of how great this

bullying affects the attitude and the life of every student. It aims how to lessen the cases of

bullying. Moreover, it will enable those concerned know how to deal with the problem of

bullying and its obvious consequences to the bully and bullied. So, it is extremely important that

parents and also to the students is aware of the reasons why students are bullied and what they

can do to help eliminate this ever-growing issue.

The success of this endeavor will benefit the following:

School Personnel. This study will give them a hint to improve their

motivational and teaching materials, techniques or methods and skills in open form to students

who really their guidance

Parents. They will be aware about the kind of attitude their child is

possessing. It will give them and hint on how they would help and encourage their child to avoid

bullying. They also need to know that the school takes bullying seriously and will take any

actions including; prevent the occurrence.

Students. This study will encourage them to change their attitude towards

other people. It will serve as a medicine to cure the minds of every individual to become open

minded or we should say aware about the consequences of their actions.

Researchers. The researchers in the near future will take use of the result of

our present study. This study will serve as their basis and comparison to their future study.
Scope and Limitations

This study was conducted at Dangcagan National High School. The study

limits to students in Grade 10 who are the bully and bullied. The respondents were randomly

selected to participate in the interview. The researchers conducted interview without having any

limitation on their age, gender as long as they are a grade 10 student.

CHAPTER 2
This chapter presents the review of related literature of the topic that we will be

conducting which is bullying. The literature provides insight into how bullying is defined and the

factors that need to be considered when defining it. The literature also gives information on

student experiences, highlighting the barriers and challenges for students with or without

exceptionalities. The possible outcomes of bully and bullied to their respective life. In this

chapter states the other way of reducing the percentage of bullying, in which the other related

literature indicates the program that they had, to the bully and to the bullied. The implication of

bullying to the life of the bully and the bullied.

Review of Related Literature

Bullying is an ongoing misuse of power in relationships through repeated verbal, physical

and/or social behaviour that causes physical and/or psychological harm. It can involve an

individual or a group misusing their power over one or more persons. Bullying can happen in

person or online, and it can be obvious (overt) or hidden (covert). Bullying of any form or for

any reason can have long-term effects on those involved, including bystanders. Single incidents

and conflict or fights between equals, whether in person or online, are not defined as bullying.

Peterson et al. (2006) concluded by noting bullying appears to be a problem with gifted children

and adolescents.

Evidence is concerned with the escalation in bullying from middle school going to high

school and carrying it on to adolescents. Even though after the sixth grade which is the

secondary level of education, the name-calling and teasing go away, much stronger and violent

bullying accrues (Peterson & Ray, 2006).in the late 1970s Dan Olweus began extensive research
on the causes and effects of bullying in Scandinavian schools and has since been a leading voice

on this topic. But it is only in the last ten to fifteen years that researchers in North America have

been actively studying the causes that lead to bullying, the long and short term effects it has on

students, and how schools and communities can effectively reduce incidents from occurring as

well as intervening and supporting students when it does.

Salmon and James (1998) found that boys aged 12-13 with high anxiety and lying scores

were most likely to be bullied at the low income school. Boys aged 15-16 with low anxiety and

lying scores and high depression scores were most likely to be bullies at the high social class

school. Girls ages 13-14 in the advantaged school with low anxiety and lying scores were least

likely to be bullied. Girls aged 12-13 with high anxiety and lying scores and low depression were

least likely to be bullies (Salmon and James, 1998, Subjects, Methods, and Results section, 2).

The study concludes that the low occurrence of bulling may show the value of bullying

intervention programs already implemented at the two schools that were assessed. A new finding

from this study is the link connecting an excessive depression score and being a bully (Salmon &

James, 1998).

Brown, Birch, and Kancherla (2005) wanted to understand the behavior of bullies by

searching for the viewpoint of young children, to determine if they thought of bullying as a

problem. They wanted to know what the children would do if they were bullied and what they

did when they witnessed someone being bullied. One thousand two hundred twenty-nine

children between the ages of 9 and 13 were sampled. The students were from seven different

states, and 31 different schools. Students could only participate in this study if they got

permission from their parents (Brown et al., 2005).

Green's (2007) research states statistics about students who committed suicide due to

being bullied at school. This was from a studied done by Greenbaum (1991). The study states in

Norway in 1984 three middle school students committed suicide after being bullied by

classmates. In another study done by Barone (1997) the Japanese government reported a 13 year

old hung himself after being bullied by classmates and gang members in his school and

neighbourhood (Green, 2007, p. 333). In Littleton, Colorado in 1999 two students committed

suicide after killing 13, because they too had been victims of bullying (also known as the

Columbine shooting) (Green, 2007).

According to Dulmus et al. (2006) participants who are victimized are more terrified of

bullying. Forty to fifty percent of the participants state educators do little or nothing at all to

offset the bullying in the schools. The study concluded future research needs to be conducted in

order for victims' needs to be met (Dulmus et al., 2006). Dake, Price, and Telljohann (2003)

found intervention of school bulling needs to become the number one concern. Peer intervention

programs to decrease bulling have had modest results. The best approach to have is for the whole

school to participate. The whole school participation would combine multiple activities to

decrease bullying. To assist schools in the United States to determine what method of bully

prevention works best, more studies need to be completed (Dake et al., 2003).

This article from Brown University (2005) collates with the Olweus Bullying Prevention

Program and backs up the information stated in Olweus study. The Brown University is for the

Olweus Program to be implemented in schools and has positive feedback about the program.

Decreasing existing bullying/victim problems, stopping the development of new occurrences of

bullying, and improving peer relations at the school are the main goals of the program. Results

have shown efficacy in all these areas according to Brown University child and adolescent
behavior letter. The U.S. department of Health and Human Services' Substance Abuse and

Mental Health Services Administration states the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program is a

"model program" (Brown University, 2005, p. 6).

CHAPTER 3

METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the methods and procedures which will be used in the study. It

includes the research design, locale of the study, participants, sampling procedure, research

instrument, data gathering procedures, and statistical treatment of data.

Research Design

. This qualitative study tries to evaluate the implication of bullying to the life of bully and

to the bullied. In which it also try to determine the common kind of bullying that really occur in

different aspect of the student. The literature review provided insight into particular happenings

and causes that are essential in understanding a study of this issue which is bullying.

This study is accompanied by respective research questions that will be question to the

grade 10 students of Dangcagan National High School. From this research question it will make

the study more easily proven or recognize the purpose of this study which is the implication of

bullying. In which they will be able to express their emotions based on their experiences.

LOCALE OF THE STUDY

This study is conducted in a public School, Dangcagan National High School located at

Purok-1B Poblacion, Dangcagan, Bukidnon to identify the impact of bullying to the life of the

bully and the bullied.

Respondents and Sampling Procedure

The samples are selected inside the campus of Dangcagan, National High School. The

researchers will the time of the selected year level to answer the research question. The sample

will be picked up by from Grade 10 students.

The samples were randomly selected without any exception of the gender, age or other

else as long as they belong to the Grade 10 students in Dangcagan National High School. The

purpose of this study is to identify the whether they are bullied or bully, and what are the

implications of bullying to their respective experiences in life as a student.

Research Instrument

In order to explore and gather data, the researchers employed primarily three research

question. First, the research question in our interview in which it gives proven to the study, and

helps to determine the factors, the causes and effects of bullying to the life of the bully and to the

bullied. On how they should take action on it and how they regain control to their attitude and

bad doings. Last, is the internet in which it help us to gather further informations and give

supports to our study by having a research to those particular articles. It make the study expands

as it gives more details and information to the topic.

CHAPTER 4

Results and Discussion

This chapter presents the results and discussion of the study. There were 3 corresponding

question in our interview for the respondents. There were 10 respondents in our study and it

conducted at grade 10 students inDangcagan National High School.

The result of the study shows the real experienced of the students about bullying,

impact of bullying to the bully and bullied. It also, indicates the implications or the good and bad

effects of bullying, the causes, and the factors on it.The result of the interview shows that the

number of victim is much higher than the bully students. It really shows who the affected

correspondents were. As a result in our interview, descriptive analysis indicate that students

experienced bullying. The results shows that, the level of the students who is a victim is 80%and

20% of the students among our 10 respondentswho is being bullied according to the result of our

interview.

According to our interview, the common types of bullying that they experienced is the

verbal and the cyber bullying and give the effects on it. According to our respondents they states

that;“Bullying can affect the self-confidence of every students likethem who experienced bullying

because it make them feel down and loss of self-stem where they will not able to participate in

the class. It is one of the cause why the victim committing suicide and end their life and trigger

them to do bad things to their selves, and feel embarrassed to the people around them”. It causes

the students depression because they were intimidated by others.” With that, the respondents

were able to give their opinions on what should the students do if someone tries to bully themand

why it is important to cease bullying.

Others said that, they should tell their teachers, parents, guidance counselor, and

disciplinarian in order to stop bullying. And it is important to cease the problem of bullying to

make the people feel free from everything without minding the people around them and continue

their studies and totally confident and beautiful with the heart.

The bully states that it wasn’t really intentional for them to bully others it just they were

influence by the others. The respondent said that, bullying others is a bit funny but sometimes

because of conscience they feel sorry to the person, and also they just bully others just to feel

how the life of being a bully is.

So, according to their responses in our interview they have different reasons why they

bully others and why there is a bullied. They also give their different opinions about bullying and

express their feelings based on their experienced.

CHAPTER 5

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

The study was conducted 1) to find the negative and positive outcomes and factors of

bullying to the academic performance of the students. 2) To determine what are the common

kind of bullying existing inside the campus. 3) To determine who were the affected students, the

bully or the bullied students.

The study was done using two instruments. First, is the questions that is used in the

interview that consist of 3 questions, participated by 10 students from Grade 10 student

inDangcagan National High School

The results of the interview in our study which is to determine what are those

implications of bullying to the life of the bully and to the bullied is a very serious problem on

how to lessen the number of victims based on the result of the problem.

On the results of our study, most of them states how bullying affects the life of the

students as a victim of bullying. Mostly, the common types of bullying that they had experienced

are Verbal bullying and cyber bullying. The others state why they are bullied by their co- student

and why also they bully others.

The results gathered showed the possible implication that the students experienced to

their learning time.

The current study clearly showed that those common bullying is very rampant inside the

campus. There are some cases that because of bullying the students committing suicide, a

depression and loss of self-esteem and because of that they will not be able to participate in class

discussion. Affect the self-confidence of every student that will lead to the students to feel down,
also trigger someone to do bad things because of bullying. There are some cases why others

bully others because as they state it, they bully others as other people bully them. They also state

that it’s an influence by the other people. In this case there should be a way to take action about

to this issue, to help and give freedom to the bully and bullied to eliminate this problem of the

students.

In this issue the teachers, parents, students and other the people must aware about this

problem which is bullying as bullying brings negative outcomes to the life of the students.

Everyone needs a freedom in every little thing without having any judgmental words by the

others.

Definition of Terms

Bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves a

real or perceived power imbalance. The behavior is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated,

over time. Both kids who are bullied and who bully others may have serious, lasting problem.

Implication the conclusion that can be drawn from something, although it is not explicitly

stated or the action or state of being involved in something.
