Unit 1

Flora and Fauna

Task 2
Listening to the description (1-6) read by your teacher and match them with the correct pictures (a-
f) in Task 1.

1. It is a family of plants. This family is called Arecaceae. Most of them are trees but some are shrubs.
There are over two thousand kinds, living in many kinds of places from rainforests to deserts. These
plants are one of the most well-known and widely planted tree families. Many common products and
foods come from them, and they are also used a lot in parks and gardens in areas that do not have
heavy frosts.
2. It is a member of the plant family Cactaceae. Their distinctive appearance is a result of adaptations
to conserve water in dry and/or hot environments. In most species, the stem has evolved to become
photosynthetic and succulent, while the leaves have evolved into spines.
3. They are the world’s heaviest living lizards. They can grow to a length of 10 feet (over 3 meters),
with an average length of 8 feet (2.5 meters) and weight of 200 lbs (91 kg.). Females are usually
under 8 feet and weigh about 150 lbs. (68 kg.).
4. This is the world’s largest marsupial. Females have one baby at a time, which at birth is smaller than
a cherry. The infant immediately climbs into its mother’s pouch and does not emerge for two
months. Until they reach about eight months of age, threatened young animal, called joeys, will
quickly dive for the safety of mom’s pouch. As they grow, joeys’ heads and feet can often be seen
hanging out of the pouch.
5. This is a perennial, bulbous plant with showy flowers in the genus Tulipa, which comprises 109
species and belongs to the family Liliaceae. The genus’s native range extends from as far west as
Southern Europe, North Africa, Anatolia, and Iran to the Northwest of China. The tulip’s center of
diversity is in the Pamir, Hindu Kush, and Tien Shan mountains. A number of species and many
hybrid cultivars are grown in gardens, as potted plants, or to display as fresh-cut flowers. Most
cultivars of tulip are derived from Tulipa gesneriana.
6. It is the Indonesian word for the bird of paradise. The Raggiana bird of paradise (Paradisaea
raggiana) is the national bird of New Guinea, and its figure graces everything from money to stamps
to taxi cabs. Because they have such rare and beautiful plumage, birds of paradise have been hunted
for centuries, and their feathers have been used for decoration and their supposed mystical
properties. They are currently listed as endangered and trapping and export are illegal, but all species
of the bird of paradise are still being traded illegally on the black market.

Task 4
Work in pairs. Listen to the text of Sugar Glider read by your friend. Then, complete the table with
the suitable information from the text.

1. Sugar gliders are tiny. Fully mature female sugar gliders typically weigh in the range of 80 grams to
130 grams, while mature males are a little bigger at 100 to 160 grams, according to
SmallAnimalChannel.com. The marsupials’ bodies are usually 5 to 6 inches long, with tails about as
long, says veterinarian Lorraine A. Corriveau of the Veterinary Hospital of Purdue University.

2. The sugar glider’s whimsical name is actually fitting. Not only do the small creatures have parachute
like gliding membrane muscles they love to use, they also really like consuming sweet things --
think tree sap, for example.
3. Sugar gliders kept indoors as pets typically live longer than their wild counterparts. The captive
cuties often live between 10 and 15 years; the range for free-roaming sugar gliders is markedly
shorter -- in the range of 5 to 7 years old.
4. Sugar gliders that live in the wild do so in tree settings -- within holes. It is very uncommon for the
territorial animals to make any contact with the ground. The sugar glider originated in New Guinea,
Indonesia and Australia.
5. Sugar gliders are omnivorous -- they consume both animal and plant matter. Some dietary staples for
the creatures are eucalyptus tree sweet sap, acacia tree gum, spiders, larvae, small bugs and nectar.
Captive sugar gliders eat mealworms, crickets and ample fresh veggies and fruits, such as broccoli,
carrots, apples, grapes, corn and peas.
6. Sugar gliders have conspicuously large eyes that enable them to see well in the dark, according to
the website for the American Museum of Natural History. It’s a good thing: The little guys are
nocturnal -- that is, they conduct most of their business overnight.
7. Sugar gliders are not loners. The animals are highly social and community-oriented. In the wild,
sugar gliders sleep in groups of up to 7 -- all snuggled together in a cozy tree hole. Because they
thrive on companionship, captive sugar gliders need to be kept in pairs. They thrive on company,
after all.
8. Sugar glider predators include owls, snakes, cats, mulgaras and kookaburra.

Task 6
Listen to the text of Greater One-Horned Rhino read by your friend . Then, answer the following
questions.

Greater One-Horned Rhino

1. Greater one-horned rhino or Rhinoceros unicornis: “uni” meaning one and “cornis” meaning horn in
Latin. It belongs to mammal. Rhinos are herbivore.
2. It weighs between 4-6,000 pounds (1,800-2,700 kg). The Greater one-horned rhinos stand at around
1.75-2 meters, and are 3-3.8 meters long. They have a shy grey, hairless skin which develops thick
folds, resembling armor plating.
3. The Greater one-horned rhino can be found in India and Nepal, and particularly in the foothills of
the Himalayas. In former times, greater one-horned rhinos roamed freely the floodplains and forests
alongside the Brahmaputra, Ganges and Indus River valley. They are closely adapted to the life
along bodies of water, and often are seen to take up residence in swamps, forests and riverines, and
anywhere that is near nutritious mineral licks.
4. Greater one-horned rhinos are usually solitary, except for females with small calves. Males have
loosely defined territories where they live alone, and which they defend aggressively, but may
overlap with other territories. The territories change according to food availability in relation to the
current season. The females can move in and out of these territories as they like. If food is abundant
within an area, it is not unusual to see several animals all grazing close together.
5. Females may begin breeding at 4 years old, and males are usually sexually mature at 9 years old.
There is no set breeding season for these animals, and a female will leave a gap of around 3-4 years
between calves. This is between 15-16 months. Just as she is ready to give birth, the cow will find a
solitary, quiet space to calve.

Global Issues

Task 2
Listen to the text of Renewable Energy Change Our Life read by your teacher. Then, answer the
following questions.

Renewable Energy Change Our Life

Renewable energy sources such as nuclear energy, solar energy, and wind energy is safer and have more
advantages than the use of petroleum as number reasons:
First, the use of renewable energy will support the program of ‘Blue Sky’. As it doesn’t burn the
petrol, it will not produce the hazard or smoke because it doesn’t involve burning process
that is used to spin the turbines to generate power. The energy itself spins the turbine instead. Even it only
produces small amount of solid waste (or even none for water and wind energy). So, it is safer for our
environment.
Second, it costs less than the burning petroleum. If we burn petroleum every day to spin the turbine,
why don’t we use the power resource that is available in nature? We need only a small amount of uranium
to generate the turbine to produce electricity and to light thousands of homes.
Third, it leads us to the future. The energy that is at present will be used up, and no more left. If we
use something that gives more advantages, I think we can maintain human lives and increase the human
civilization.
One thing is clear, that renewable energy is much better than petroleum. If we support the government’s
plan to use the renewable energy, we can change our life.

Task 14
Listen to your teacher the text entitled Greenhouse Effect.

Greenhouse Effect
Factories send gases, such as carbon dioxide, or CO2, into the atmosphere, the air around the earth.
In the past, this wasn’t a problem because trees absorbed, or drank in, CO2. But now people are cutting
down billions of trees in many countries.
At the same time, factories are sending more CO2 in the atmosphere. It’s difficult to believe, but factories
put billions of tons of CO2 into the atmosphere.
Every year, one ton is 2000 pounds, so this is a lot of pollution. There’s too much CO2, and there aren’t
enough trees, so the world is getting warmer.
In other words, we have a greenhouse effect. This is terrible for the environment.
Do you have the same feeling with me? The environment now is getting worse.

Task 21
Listen to your teacher read the biography of Albert Einstein and pay attention to the passive form
in the text. Then, answer the following questions.

Albert Einstein
Physicist and Genius
Born in 1879, died in 1955

Albert Einstein was born in Ulm, Germany. His father was an electrical engineer, and his mother was a
musician. She taughed him to appreciate music, and he learned to play the violin. When he was very
young he was slow in development. He did not speak until he was two years old, and even when he was
older he had trouble answering a question. His teachers thought he would never be successful at anything.
When he was six, his father gave him a compass. He was fascinated by the way the needle always
pointed north. This experience helped to create a great curiosity in him and had an impact on the rest of
his life.
His family moved to Munich, Germany where in elementary school he was the only Jew in a
Catholic school. He attended a high school called Luitpold Gymnasium. He failed the entrance
examination and had to spend a year at another college before returning to Zurich.
Up to this point his life had been rather unremarkable. After college he took a job at the Swiss Patent
Office examining patents for people’s inventions. This job was ideal for him because he had a lot of free
time for research about things that really interested him; things such as light and time.
The year 1905 was an exceptional year for Einstein. In that year he published three outstanding
papers. First, he outlined his photoelectric law in which he discussed the behavior of light. This led to the
development of television and motion pictures with sound. In 1921 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for
this paper. The second paper, which was his most famous, explored the relation of mass to energy
(E=mc2) and addressed the problem of atomic energy. This paper provided the basis for the development
of the atomic bomb. The third paper was On the Electrodynamics of Moving Bodies which is also known
as the Special Theory of Relativity.
He spent his life working to find a balance between science and spirituality. He once said at a
Symposium, “Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind.”
At the end of his life, Einstein was a lonely man. His wife Elsa died after they had been married for
seventeen years. His health began to fail and he died at the age of 76.

Task 26
Work in pairs. Listen to the song entitled The Lucky One by Taylor Swift. While listening to it, fill
the gaps in the song lyric below.

Taylor Swift - The Lucky One

New to town with a made up name in the angel city,
Chasing fortune and fame.
And the camera flashes make it look like a dream.
You had it figured out since you were in school.
Everybody loves pretty, everybody loves cool.
So overnight you look like a sixties’ queen.
Another name goes up in lights, like diamonds in the sky.
And they’ll tell you now, you’re the lucky one.

PAG Fácil: Advanced Learning English 2 for Grade XI Senior High School 168
Yeah, they’ll tell you now, you’re the lucky one.
But can you tell me now, you’re the lucky one, oh, oh, oh...
Now it’s big black cars, and Riviera views,
And your lover in the foyer doesn’t even know you
And your secret end up splashed on the news front page.
And they tell you that you’re lucky.
But you’re so confused,
Cause you don’t feel pretty, you just feel used.
And all the young things line up to take your place.
Another name goes up in lights.
You wonder if you’ll make it out alive.
And they’ll tell you now, you’re the lucky one.
Yeah, they’ll tell you now, you’re the lucky one.
, Can you tell me now, you’re the lucky one, oh, oh, oh.
It was a few years later, I showed up here.
And they still tell the legend of how you disappeared,
How you took the money and your dignity, and got the hell out.
They say you bought a bunch of land somewhere,
Chose the Rose Garden over Madison Square,
And it took some time, but I understand it now.
‘Cause now my name is up in lights, but I think you got it right,
Let me tell you now, you’re the lucky one.
Let me tell you now, you’re the lucky one.
Let me tell you now, you’re the lucky one, oh, oh, oh.
Yeah they’ll tell you now, you’re the lucky one.
Yeah, they’ll tell you now, you’re the lucky one.
And they’ll tell you now, you’re the lucky one, oh, oh, oh.
Oh, whoa, oh, oh
