About Mahindra and Mahindra

Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd (M&M) is an India-based company. The company


operates in nine segments: automotive segment comprises of sales of
automobiles, spare parts and related services; farm equipment segment
comprises of sales of tractors, spare parts and related services; information
technology (IT) services comprises of services rendered for IT and telecom;
financial services comprise of services relating to financing, leasing and hire
purchase of automobiles and tractors; steel trading and processing comprises of
trading and processing of steel; infrastructure comprise of operating of
commercial complexes, project management and development; hospitality
segment comprises of sale of timeshare; Systech segment comprises of
automotive components and other related products and services, and its others
segment comprise of logistics, after-market, two wheelers and investment.

Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd was incorporated on October 2, 1945 with the name
Mahindra & Mohammed Ltd. The company was renamed as Mahindra & Mahindra
Ltd in the year 1948. The steel trading business was commenced in association
with suppliers in UK. In the year 1950, the company commenced the first
business with Mitsubishi Corporation and 5000 tons of wagon building plates
from Yawata Iron & Steel were supplied.

CSR done by Mahindra and Mahindra

1. The CSR Committee comprises of Dr. Vishakha N Desai (Chairperson),


Anand G ahindra, RK Kulkarni, Dr Pawan Goenka and Vikram Singh
Mehta. The Committee, inter alia, monitors the CSR activities.

2. M&M CSR efforts continue to be directed towards supporting the


constituencies of girls, youth and farmers by innovatively supporting them
through programs in the domains of education, health and environment,
while harnessing the power of technology. It is only through these
sustained and continued efforts that a Company can build and consolidate
its CSR activities which contribute to nation building.

3. M&M has been making an impact through its ongoing CSR programs,
some of the notable ones include Project Nanhi Kali, which supports the
education of underprivileged girls.

4. Mahindra Pride Schools, which provide livelihood training to youth from


socially and economically disadvantaged communities and a variety of
other scholarship programs, which range from providing opportunities to
youth from low income group families to undergo diploma courses at
vocational education institutes, to allowing meritorious students to pursue
their post graduate studies at reputed universities overseas, to allowing
meritorious and deserving students to study at the Mahindra United World
College in Pune.
5. It has also helped set up a engineering institution ‘Mahindra Ecole
Centrale’ MEC in Hyderabad, in partnership with Ecole Centrale, Paris and
the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Hyderabad.
6. In the area of public health, M&M sponsored Lifeline Express, through
which medical care and treatment was provided to communities who do
not have access to any medical facilities.

7. M&M contributed to the environment by adding green cover through


planting of over two million trees this year through Project Hariyali.

8. Supported small and marginal farmers by training them in effective


farming practices including soil, health, crop planning, creating model
farms with bio-dynamic farming practice, with a view to increasing crop
productivity, through Wardha Farmer Family Project, Krishi Mitra Project
and Integrated Watershed Development Project.

9. M&M partnered with Maharashtra Govt. to support Village Social


Transformation Mission of the Govt.

10.It has created a Zero Fatality Corridor to ensure ‘zero’ deaths due to
accidents on Mumbai Pune Expressway.

11.Company has a vibrant Employee Social Options platform through which


the employees are provided opportunities to give back to the community.

Conclusion

With businesses focusing on generating profits, CSR was not a popular concern
among companies up until recently. With increased media attention, pressure
from non-governmental organizations, and rapid global information sharing,
there is a surging demand to involve into CSR at various level like conducting
sustainable business practices and doing social welfare activities. Mahindra &
Mahindra and Coca-Cola plays major role, in fulfilling their duties towards the
societal orientation segment. Their initiative helps their own company and also
others generating wealth and this way company also generates good revenues
from the wealthier and more loyal customers, and also increase their customer
base. In Conclusion, we can say that Social responsibility can go hand in hand
with great business profits and therefore, can generate win-win situations.
