PEOPLE AND PLACES


A. Description
Level : Elementary
There are 25 students in the class. The classes take place on Tuesday at 5 o’clock and on
Friday at 5 o’clock. They are a little noisy and talkative in mother tongue. Some Ss lack basic
knowledge in English so they keep interrupting the T as they need additional explanations in
mother tongue.
The Ss are cooperative and competitive.

1. to match countries with capital cities
2. to discover the way the nationality adjectives are formed

D. Contents

Objective 1 : (estimated time : 10 minutes )


(a) Context: match the names of the capital cities with the names of the countries. Then
Ss find the capital cities on the map.
(b) Activity /class organization : pair work
(c) Aids : worksheet with map of the world
(d) Language : none
(e) Possible problems : Ss might find it difficult to remember topics from geography

Objective 2 : (estimated time : 10 minutes )


(a) Context: the Ss look at the map of the world and discover where those people come
from. Then the Ss group the adjectives written below the people according to the color
of the people’s clothes.
(b) Activity /class organization : pair work
(c) Aids : worksheet with map of the world
(d) Language : adjectives related to nationalities
(e) Possible problems: Ss might find it difficult to discover the common element for each
column of adjectives.
Objective 3: (estimated time : 5 minutes )
(a) Context: matching exercise. The Ss get a worksheet in which they have to match the
nationalities to the representative pictures of the people (Australian, Scottish,
Japanese, Canadian, French, German, British, Italian, Mexican, Irish, Russian,
Korean, American, Spanish, and Chinese).
(b) Activity /class organization : pair work
(c) Aids : pictures with nationalities
(d) Language : adjectives related to nationalities
(e) Possible problems: They might have problems with guessing the Irish and the Korean.

Objective 3 : (estimated time : 10 minutes )


(a) Context: Fill –in exercise. Ss get a worksheet with a fill-exercise. They have to
complete the sentence with the correct nationality according to the international
stereotype.

(e) Possible problems: They might have problems with guessing the most representative
characteristics of the nationalities in question.

(a) Context: free practice with nationality adjectives. Ss have to write short descriptions
of different nationalities ( English, Romanians, Italians, French)
