Intro to airborne radar

Janine Love - July 07, 2014

Radar is a great constant for those of us working in the RF/microwave field. Regardless of the
fluctuations of the gadget-driven commercial market, interest in radar never seems to ebb and flow.
Many students of radar are familiar with George Stimson’s Introduction to Airborne Radar. The good
news is that SciTech Publishing has worked with a team of radar and EW engineers to update a
third edition of the text. They promise that it covers the wide range of techniques employed in
modern airborne and space borne radars, and it is accessible to people with a range of technical
backgrounds.

The text aims to provide an overview of airborne radar without delving deeply into math much
beyond trigonometry. It includes fundamentals (for ground-based and airborne radar), application
discussions, as well as illustrations, tables, figures, and photographs. While this edition of the text
has been reviewed and “modernized,” it aims to maintain the style and voice of the original. It also
includes two new chapters, one on electronic warfare (EW) and another on special topics.

Who would benefit from this text? The editors believe it is useful for radar engineers; students in
radar, aviation and aeronautics; military pilots, radar intercept officers, ground crews, and avionics
technicians; and radar marketing/sales personnel.

The book was reviewed by more than 50 radar experts from around the world. It addresses the
major changes in radar systems over the last 20 years, including the pervasive use of high-resolution
imaging, electronic scanning, and digital technology.

SciTech Publishing has offered EDN readers two excerpts from the text. Click on the links below to
