Homework of Chapter (5)

Question (1):
For the figure shown, a perfectly balanced 700-N weight and platform are supported
by a steady water jet. What is the proper jet velocity?

1
Question (2):
A converging elbow turns water through an angle of 135o in a vertical plane. The flow
cross section diameter is 400 mm at the elbow inlet section (1), and 200 mm at the
elbow outlet section (2). The elbow flow passage volume is 0.20 m3 between sections
(1) and (2). The water volume flow rate is 0.40 m3/s and the elbow inlet and outlet
pressures are 150 kPa and 90 kPa. The elbow mass is 12 kg.
Calculate the horizontal (x direction) and vertical (z direction) anchoring forces
required to hold the elbow in place.

2
Question (3):
For the shown frictionless cart. Compute the tension in the supporting cable.

3
Question (4):
A vertical, circular cross-sectional jet of air strikes a conical deflector as indicated in
figure below. A vertical anchoring force of 0.1 N is required to hold the deflector in
place. Determine the mass of the deflector. The magnitude of velocity of the air remains
constant. (Density of air = 1.23 kg/m3)

4
Question (5):
Air leaves a nozzle with a diameter of 15 mm and strikes the center of a vertically
oriented circular plate with a diameter of 50 mm. The force required to move the plate
toward the jet at a constant speed of 0.5 m/s is 10 N. Determine the pressure in the air
supply pipe, which has a diameter of 20 mm. (Density of air = 1.23 kg/m3)
