1. The open tank in figure contains water at 20°C and is being filled
through section 1. Assume incompressible flow. First derive an
analytic expression for the water-level change dh/dt in terms of
arbitrary volume flows (Q1, Q2, Q3) and tank diameter d. Then,
if the water level h is constant, determine the exit velocity V2 for
the given data V1 = 5 m/s and Q3 = 0.01 m3/s.

2. Small-diameter, high-pressure liquid jets can be used to cut

various materials as shown in Figure. If viscous effects are
negligible, estimate the pressure needed to produce a 0.10-mm-
diameter water jet with a speed of 700 m/s.
Determine the flow rate.

3. The water tank in figure stands on a frictionless cart and

feeds a jet of diameter 4 cm and velocity 8 m/s, which is
deflected 60° by a vane. Compute the tension in the
supporting cable.

4. A converging elbow turns water through an

angle of 135 o in a vertical plane. The flow
cross section diameter is 400 mm at the elbow
inlet, section (1), and 200 mm at the elbow
outlet, section (2). The elbow flow passage
volume is 0.2 m3 between sections (1) and (2).
The water volume flow rate is 0.4 m3/s and the
elbow inlet and outlet pressures are 150 kPa
and 90 kPa. The elbow mass is 12 kg.
Calculate the horizontal (x direction) and
vertical (z direction) anchoring forces required
to hold the elbow in place.

5. A horizontal circular jet of air strikes a stationary flat plate asindicated
in Figure. The jet velocity is 40 m/s and the jet diameter is 30 mm. If
the air velocity magnitude remains constant as the air flows over the
plate surface in the directions shown, determine:
(a) the magnitude of FA, the anchoring force required to hold the plate stationary;
(b) the fraction of mass flow along the plate surface ineach of the two directions
(c) the magnitude of FA, the anchoring force required to allow the plate to move to
the right at a constant speed of 10 m/s.

6. The pressure rise, across a pump can be expressed as ΔP= f (D, ρ, ω, Q)

where D is the impeller diameter, ρ is the fluid density, ω is the rotational speed, and Q the flow rate.
Determine a suitable set of dimensionless parameters.

7. A 40-m-long, 12-mm-diameter pipe with a friction factor of 0.020 is used to siphon 30 °C water from a tank as
shown in Figure. Determine the maximum value of h allowed if there is to be no cavitation within the hose.
Neglect minor losses.

8. The pump shown in Figure delivers a head of 250 ft to the water. Determine the power that the pump adds to
the water. The difference in elevation of the two ponds is 200 ft.
