EXAMPLE SHEET 2:
MIXTURES AND FLOWS
1. A mixture contains the following components by volume:

52.26 % C2H4 ; 5.49 % C2H5OH ; 0.16% (C2H5)2O ; 36.81% H2O and 5.28%
N2

The total flow rate is 150 mol/h and the stream is a vapour.
Determine the molar and mass flow rates, and the mass fractions for all the
components.

2. An aqueous solution of 0.5 M sulphuric acid is fed to a reactor at 1.25m 3/min. If

the density of the solution is 1030 kg/m 3, calculate:

(a) the concentration of H2SO4 in solution, in kg/m3

(b) the mass flowrate of H2SO4 into the reactor, in kg/s
(c) the mass fraction of H2SO4 in the feed
[49 kg/m 3; 1.02 kg/s; 0.048]

3. At 25oC an aqueous solution containing 35 wt% of H2SO4 has a specific gravity

of 1.2563. Determine the volumetric flow rate (in l/min) of this solution which is
needed to supply 195.5 kg/h of H2SO4.
[7.4 l/min]

4. A suspension of calcium carbonate in water flows through a pipe. Over a 1

minute period 455 ml are collected at the outlet. They were found to weigh 500
g. The suspension is then treated in an evaporator to remove its water content.
After evaporation, 215 g are found to remain. What are the volumetric (in
m3/h) and mass flow rates (in kg/h)? What is the density of the suspension?
What is the mole fraction of CaCO3 in the suspension?
[0.12]
