TUTORIAL 1 (Waste water)

1. The wastewater is being discharged into a river that has a temperature of 150C. The BOD rate
constant determined in the laboratory for this mixed water is 0.12 per day. What fraction of
maximum oxygen consumption will occur in first four days?
2. Two samples were taken from two different points of a river with DO contents as follows:
Sample

DO0 (mg/l)

DO5 (mg/l)

7.6

5.7

7.5

5.3

7ml of samples were diluted to 700ml to determine the BOD (assume k as constant). Which
sample is cleaner?
3. 2ml of a river water sample was diluted to 1litre. The initial DO content was 7.8mg/l. After 5
days DO content dropped to 5.9mg/l. After 20 days DO content dropped to 5.3mg/l. What is the
ultimate BOD?
4. The dissolved oxygen in an unseeded sample of diluted wastewater having an initial DO of
9.0 mg/L is measured to be 3.0 mg/L after 5 days. The dilution fraction is 0.03 and reaction rate
constant k = 0.22 day-1. Calculate a) 5 day BOD of the waste, b) ultimate carbonaceous BOD
and c) What would be remaining oxygen demand after 5 days?
5. A dairy processing about 1,33,000 kg of milk daily, produces an average of 246 m3/day of
wastewater with a BOD of 1400mg/L. The principal operations are bottling of milk and making
ice cream, with limited production of cheese. Compute the wastewater flow and BOD per
1000kg of milk received and the equivalent population of the daily waste discharge. Assume an
average BOD load per person as 90 g/person.day

Oxygen Sag curve problems

6. A city discharges 20000 m3/day of sewage into a river whose rate of flow is 0.7 m3/sec.
Determine D.O. deficit profile for 100 km from the following data:
River

Sewage effluent from STP

5 day B.O.D. at 20 0C = 3.4 mg/l

5 day B.O.D. at 20 0C = 45 mg/l

Temperature 230C

Temperature 26 0C

D.O. = 8.2 mg/l

D.O. = 2.0 mg/l

Velocity of mix = 0.25 m/sec, R=0.4, K = 0.23

7. A river is having discharge of 22 m3/s receives wastewater discharge of 5 m3/s. The initial DO
of the river water is 6.3 mg/L, and DO content in the wastewater is 0.6 mg/L. The five day BOD
in the river water is 3 mg/L, and the wastewater added to river has five day BOD of 130 mg/L.
Consider saturation DO of 8.22 mg/L and deoxygenation and reoxygenation constant values of
0.1 and 0.3 per day, respectively. Find critical DO deficit and DO in the river after one day. The
average velocity of flow in the stream after mixing of wastewater is 0.18 m/sec.
