Tokamaks Around the World



There are several major tokamak experiments around the world, and many
smaller tokamak experiments. The goal of research on these tokamaks is to support
the physics basis for ITER.

You can find more about these tokamaks online. We list here several major

Look online to find out what fusion research is happening in your country.
Write up a short paragraph summarizing fusion research near your home, and see if
you can identify how that research supports ITER.

Homework, self-study: Spherical Tokamaks

“Spherical tokamaks” are related to standard tokamaks but are not exactly the same
configuration as used in the ITER tokamak. Read about spherical tokamaks and see
if you can answer these two questions:

1. How are standard tokamaks different from spherical tokamaks?

2. Achieving high values of which metric of fusion performance makes
spherical tokamaks of great interest?
