Freshman English is a year-long course which explores the theme of how challenges can build
character. Students will demonstrate their learning and mastery of standards and individual
goals in reading, writing, and communication.

Course Content
Reading: You will be reading many types of texts – novels, articles, poems and plays. Reading
materials will be at different levels, to help develop fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and
thinking skills. After-reading activities will include discussion, projects, written responses and
journaling.

Writing: You will practice formal and informal writing. This will include essays, journaling,
narratives, creative writes, etc. You will spend time revising some of your work to produce a
polished product.

Essential Assignments: All assignments listed in Skyward are required, as each addresses a
standard skill and individual goal. Work that does not meet the standard may be resubmitted
after further learning has occurred. All essential assignments will be completed in class.

Homework: No homework will be regularly assigned. If a student misses class or misuses class
time, there will likely be work to complete at home. Students are responsible for
communicating with the teacher when school is missed in order to understand what work has
been missed.

Grading: Freshman English will adhere to the Lynden High School grading scale as explained in
the LHS Student Handbook 2019-2020. Students are assessed according to their mastery of key
skills laid out by the English Language Arts Common Core State Standards as well as their
individual goals.

Required Materials:
