Dental Hygiene really is an intense program that will make you constantly want to

challenge yourself for improvement. So far, I can say that I am doing pretty well overall, but can

definitely do so much better. I have been struggling in a couple of courses, but I have been

trying to work hard to improve my grades in these courses. Clinic and Rad Lab have been the

major cause of my stress in this program, as it is sometimes hard to put theory in practice. I

could say however, that it feels very fulfilling to be able to accomplish a lot both in Clinic and

Rad Lab. Learning different procedures, instrumentation, and different x-ray techniques have

been very fascinating for me. I have been working in the Dental field for about seven years now,

and having a dental background definitely did help me be able to get through this term. And I

am hoping the same thing applies for the next few terms. My goals for the next term are to get

better grades, to be more organized, procrastinate a lot less, and to be more involved in school.

My mentor told me that the best way to learn are to read the textbooks to learn the theory,

attend all lectures, ask for feedback in clinic, and go to skills development workshops. I find that

being organized is very important, as well as time management, to be successful in this

program. Planning things ahead, and giving yourself a head start on things will definitely help in

dealing with the amount of stress in this program. Writing things on my calendar or agenda

have been very helpful for me to be able to keep track of assignments that are due, quizzes,

tests, and exams. This is something I plan on continuing on doing for the next few terms, to

help me thrive in this program. In the future, I will definitely try to get as much help as I can get,

to be able to understand course contents, procedures in clinic, and techniques in lab. Being

involved in group studying, tutoring, skills development, and open labs, I know will certainly

help me reach my goals for the next term. I want to be a good a clinician, and knowing the

material is very important to be one. I want to be able to give my clients the proper treatment

they need and deserve, and be able to educate them properly about their oral health and

systemic health. I want to challenge myself every day, by learning something new, taking the

initiative on things, and putting more effort when finishing tasks. This mentorship assignment

have been helpful in regards to a student’s expectations. Being a Junior Dental Hygiene student

can sometimes or most of the time feel a little bit overwhelming, and knowing that the Senior

Students understand and can relate to our struggles really help, as they provide more insights

in regards to things, and give us advice on how to be able to manage things better.
