Latar Belakang

Problem

Porta-Putt, inc., manufactures and distributes gasoline-powered outboard motors for


boats. One of their three assembly plants, the St. Louis plant, is absolete. The los Angeles and
Chicago assembly plants were recently renovated. Rather than continue operation in St.
Louis, management is considering a new location for the third plant. This is an oppurtune
time, because in two years the new Denver distribution warehouse will be opened. Since the
new assembly plant could be the primary supplier of motors to the Denver warehouse, the
new plant could be located to minimize shipping costs, which are a substantial part of Porta-
Putt’s operating costs.

Two types of shipping costs are incurred at the St. Louis plant. First, raw materials
and subcomponents are shipped from Minneapolis and Seattle to th St. Louis facility. Then,
after final assembly, the St. Louis plant ships the finished motors to the Denver distribution
warehouse. Table 6.5 summarizes the annual number of loads shipped between St. Louis and
each of the other three sites. Th cost of shipping a load is estimated to be $.10/mile.

Management would like to find a location that would minimize the potentially high
annual transportation costs. At th same time, however, there is some hesitation about moving
away from metropolitan St. Louis, the original assembly plant established 35 years ago.
Porta-Putt’s experienced work force has survived many work methods and assembly line
changes. From these refinements evolved an intricate asembly operation that efficiently
produced quality motors-until recently, when the plant became technologically obsolete. The
vice president, who must make the location decision, feels that he should tell the St. Louis
employees they might lose their jobs, but so far he has only discussed this possibility with
several St. Louis managers. When the idea of relocation was introduced, these managers were
dismayed at the prospect of leaving St. Louis. Present an analysis of the major factors in this
decision and recommend a location.

Berdasarkan titik kordinate pada masing masing .. jika digambarkan maka diperoleh gambar
seperti berikut :

Tujuan dari kasus di atas adalah untuk mencari koordinat x0 dan y0 (tempat baru) dimana
tempat tersebut dapat meminimalkan biaya pengiriman. Untuk mendapatkan nilai xo dan yo
tersebut dilakukan langkah seperti berikut :

1. Idientify the median loads.


Jumlah total muatan yang berpindah dari dan ke tempat baru adalah 22,000.
Dikarenakan jumlah tersebut bilangan genap maka median yang dipertimbangkan
adalah 11,000 dan 11,001

2. Find the x-coordinate of the median load


Untuk mendapatkan titik koordinat x0 maka pertama yang harus dilakukan
adalah mempertimbangkan jarak pada sumbu x dari perpindahan. Muatan 1-8,000
dikirimkan dari Seattle dengan lokasi x = 100. Muatan 8,001-18,000 dikirimkan dari
Denver dengan x=1,000. Dikarenakan median muatan berada pada interval 8,000-
18,000 maka titik koordinat x yang memenuhi untuk lokasi tempat baru adalah
x=1,000

3. Find the y-coordinate of median load
Untuk mendapatkan titik koordinat y0 maka pertama yang harus dilakukan
adalah mempertimbangkan jarak pada sumbu y dari perpindahan muatan. Muatan 1-
10,000 dikirimkan dari Denver dengan lokasi y = 550. Muatan 10,001-14,000
dikirimkan dari Minneapolis dengan x=900. Dikarenakan median muatan berada pada
interval 10,001 – 14,000 maka titik koordinat y yang memenuhi untuk lokasi tempat
baru adalah y=900

Dengan demikian, lokasi optimal tempat baru, x=1,000 dan y=900 menghasilkan
biaya pengiriman minimal. Untuk menghitung biaya tersebut dapat menggunakan rumus
