Helyesírási tudnivalók:
- Amikor a képzőt hozzáillesztjük a szótőhöz, néha a szótő hangjai is módosulnak.
pl. decide → decision
- A szóvégi néma –e a képző előtt kiesik.
pl. true → truth
b) Előképző (prefix): a szó elejéhez kapcsolt toldalék (a magyarban nincs ilyen képző, de
előfordul pl. a felsőfokú melléknevek „leg-” jelében)
pl. legal (törvényes) → ILlegal (törvénytelen)
c) Szófajváltás / zéró képző (conversion): a szó külön képző nélkül más szófajúságot vesz
föl, attól függően, hogy a mondatban milyen szerepet tölt be. A magyarban is előfordul ez,
de elég ritka: pl. reggel – lehet főnév (Szép volt a reggel.), vagy lehet időhatározószó:
(Reggel érkeztünk meg.)
pl. play (játszik) → play (színdarab)
d) Tőhangváltás: ilyenkor az eredeti szó magán- vagy mássalhangzói közül változik meg
valamelyik (de nem teszünk egyéb képzőt a szóra).
pl. blood (vér) → bleed (vérzik)

Főnevet képezhetünk másik főnévből, igéből vagy melléknévből.
Főnévképzés FŐNÉVBŐL
Előképzővel (prefix)
Dis-
Az eredeti főnévvel ellentétes értelmű főnevet fejez ki.
pl. advantage disadvantage (előny hátrány)
comfort discomfort (kényelem kényelmetlenség)
Utóképzőkkel (suffix)
-ist
Valamilyen foglakozást, tevékenységet űző, elvet valló személyt jelöl (a magyarban általában: -
ista).
pl. bicycle cyclist (bicikli biciklista)
piano pianist (zongora zongorista)
science scientist (tudomány tudós)
novel novelist (regény regényíró)
race racist (rassz/faj rasszista)
-ism
(a magyarban általában: -izmus)
pl. alcohol alcoholism (alkohol alkoholizmus)
Marx Marxism (Marx marxizmus)
race racism (rassz/faj rasszizmus)
-ic
Valamit megszállottan űző személy (a magyarban általában: -ista)

Általában valamilyen inkább férfiakra jellemző foglalkozást jelöl.
pl. fire fireman (tűz tűzoltó)

-(er)y
Általában egy – er végű foglalkozás megnevezéséből a munkahely megnevezése.

Kicsinyítő/becéző képző (a magyarban általában: -ka/ke)

Általában valamilyen hímnemű személy/állat női párja.
pl. prince princess (herceg hercegnő)
waiter waitress (pincér pincérnő)

- általában valamilyen pozíció, helyzet (a magyarban általában: -ság/-ség)
pl. friend friendship (barát barátság)
leader leadership (vezető vezetőség)
dictator dictatorship (diktátor önkényuralom)
-hood
- általában valamilyen összetartozást vagy időszakot jelöl (a magyarban általában: kor; -ság/-ség)
