Tutorial-9

1. A mass of 5000 kg moves on a straight line from a speed of 540 km/hr to 720
km/hr in 2 minutes. What is the impulse developed in this time? Find the
center of mass of the uniform sheet of plywood in the figure below. Let the
coordinate origin be at the lower left corner of the sheet.

2. Consider a semicircular wire of radius R as shown in the figure. The density

of the wire varies as

𝜌(𝑥, 𝑦) = 𝜌0 (1 + 𝑎 𝑥 + 𝑏 𝑦),
where ρ0, a, b are constants of appropriate dimensions. Calculate the center of
mass (xC, yC) of this wire. What happens in the limit 𝑎 ⟶ 0, 𝑏 ⟶ 0.
3. A dog of mass 10 kg is standing on a flat 10 m long boat so that is 20 meters
from the shore. It walks 8 m on the boat towards the shore and then stops. The
mass of the boat is 40 kg and friction between the boat and the water surface
is negligible. How far is the dog from the shore now?

4. Particle A of mass m has initial velocity v0. After colliding with particle B of
mass 2m initially at rest, the particles follow the paths shown in the right-hand
sketch. Find θ.
