Instructions
* Attempt all questions.
* Paper A has Two Parts I and II. Each question of Part I carries 2 marks and each
question of part II caries 5 marks.
* Calculators and log tables are not permitted.

PART – I

1. A small cube of mass m slides down a circular path of radius R cut into m
a larger block of mass M, as shown in the figure. M rests on a table,
and both blocks move without friction. The blocks are initially at rest, R
and m starts from the top of the path. Find the velocity v of the cube as
it leaves the block. M

2. 24.6 eV of energy is required to remove one of the electrons from a neutral helium atom. Calculate
energy (in eV) required to remove both the electrons from a neutral helium atom ?

3. If a luminous point is moving at a speed v 0 towards a spherical mirror of focal length f along its axis,
find the speed of the image.

4. The half-life of radium is 1620 years. How many radium atoms decay in 1s in a 1gm sample of
radium. The atomic weight of radium is 226 kg/k mol.

5. An audio signal of amplitude one half the carrier amplitude is used in amplitude modulation. Calculate
the modulation index?

6. An electron moves straight inside a charged parallel plate capacitor of

uniform surface charge density . The space x +
 between the plates is filled
x x
with constant magnetic field of induction B , as shown in the figure. em
x x x
Neglecting gravity, find the time of straight line motion of the electron in
the capacitor. x x x 

7. A boat which has a speed of 5 km/hr in still water crosses a river of width 1 km along the shortest
possible path in 15 minutes. Find the velocity of the river water in kilometre per hour.

8. A syringe of diameter D = 8 mm and having a nozzle of diameter V=0.25 m/s

d = 2 mm is placed horizontally at a height of 1.25 m as shown in
the figure. An incompressible and non-viscous liquid is filled in
h=1.25 m
syringe and the piston is moved at speed of 0.25 m/s. Find the
range of liquid jet on the ground.

9. A tank of volume 0.2 m contains helium gas at a temperature of 300 K and pressure 1  10 N/m .
Find the amount of heat required to raise the temperature to 400 K. The molar heat capacity of
helium at constant volume is 3.0 cal/mol-K.

10. A block of mass 3 kg is resting on a horizontal plane (coefficient F

of static friction  = 1 2 3 ). A force F is applied to the block as 60

shown in the figure. Find the minimum magnitude of F for which the m=3kg
block begins to slide. (g = 10 m/s2 )

PART – II

11. An enclosure of volume 4 litres contains a mixture of 8 g of oxygen, 14 g of nitrogen and 22g of
carbon dioxide. If the temperature of the mixture is 27C find the pressure of the mixture of gases.
Given R = 8.315 JK1mol1

12. A person uses + 1.5 D glasses to have normal vision from 25 cm onwards. He uses a 20 D lens as a
simple microscope to see an object. Calculate the maximum magnifying power, If he uses the
microscope (a) together with his glasses (b) without the glasses.

13. When a 15 V dc source is applied across a choke coil, then a current of 5 Amp flows in it. If the same
coil is connected to a 15 V, 50 rad/s ac source, a current of 3 Amp flows in the circuit. Determine the
inductance of the coil. Also find the power developed in the circuit and its resonance frequency if a
2500 f capacitor is connected in series with the coil.

14 Two uniform rods A and B of length 0.6 m each and of masses 0.01 kg and 0.02 P
kg respectively are rigidly joined end to end. The combination is pivoted at the
lighter end P as shown in figure, such that it can freely rotate about point P in a
vertical plane. A small object ‘O’ of mass 0.05 kg moving horizontally, hits the A
lower end of the combination and sticks to it. What should be the velocity and the
object so that the system could just be raised to the horizontal position?
