F . 2. Entering a positlon

F.2.a. Clearing the board

The initial position <White A1-H1• A2-H2 and Black A7-H7• A8-H8)
is automatically stored in HEPH I ST O at the start of a game. In
order to enter a particular position e.g. for solving chess
problemsr it is flrst necessary to clear the board. It isn't
enough to just remove the pleces - as you can see from a position.
verification for yourself.

You.have to tell the memory ln your computer that nothing -

but nothing - is on the sensor board. Do this by pressing •pos11
<MPOS W appears in the display). Then press 11ENT11 and the
coputer will ask you whether you really want to clear the board
by displaying MCL ?I. Changed your mind? - press •CL• and
everything remains as lt was. But you wanted to enter a certain ..

chess positionr so press "ENT" again boldly and the board is

cleared in HEPHISTO's memory. To confirm that "the deed is done"
M K--1 will appear in the display a symbol for the white King
<which is no longer there).

F.2.b. Entering a position

The advantages of HEPHISTO's new dialogue system become part

yourself how easy it can be. We have selected <more or less for

Rooks and Bishops are also not needed so "ENT" must be pressed
again twice. A whlte Knight is placed on DJ but the display
contlnues to show M s--M. We don't need the other Knight so
press " ENT" once more. Using the same key, tell M E P H I S T O that
