GRADE 11 GENERAL MATHEMATICS
INSTRUCTIONAL PLAN

SUBJECT: Grade 11 General Mathematics

LEARNING COMPETENCY: Illustrates the laws of Logarithms (M11GM-Ih-3)
TOPIC: Laws of Logarithm (Power Law)
REFERENCES: General Mathematics Teacher’s Guide and Learner’s
Material (DepEd Reference from LRMDS)

MATERIALS: Activity Sheets, Markers, Laptop, Projector

Time/Duration INSTRUCTIONAL SEQUENCE

Objectives: The session aims for learners to:
1. discover the Power Law,
2 minutes
2. illustrate Laws of Logarithm, and
3. apply laws of logarithm in simplifying logarithmic expressions.
Priming Activity:
Drill/Review (Product and Quotient Law)
Destined to be Yours
Students will be given a part of a broken heart that contains a logarithmic
5 minutes expression. They need to find their destined pair by finding the other half of their
heart which is a logarithmic expression is equal to what is written in their respective
broken hearts. After finding their destined pair, they will post their answers on the
board and identify what law (product or power) was used.
(See attachment 1)
ACTIVITY
INSPECTOR JUAN
The students will be simplifying logarithmic expressions in groups. They will
10 minutes
identify which expressions yield the same value. After that, they will create a law
that defines the process and give a name for the said law.
(See attachment 2)
ANALYSIS
1. Share your AHA! moment.
2. What part of the activity was CHALLENGING?
8 minutes
3. How do you feel about naming a law?
4. How will your new discovery affect your future performance in Math?

ABSTRACTION
Discussion (Emphasis on the last law)
Laws of Logarithm
Let 𝑎 be a positive number with 𝑎 ≠ 1. Let 𝐴 > 0, 𝐵 > 0, and 𝑛 be any real
number.
1. log 𝑎 𝐴𝐵 = log 𝑎 𝐴 + log 𝑎 𝐵
10 minutes The logarithm of a product is the sum of the logarithms.
𝐴
2. log 𝑎 ( ) = log 𝑎 𝐴 − log 𝑎 𝐵
𝐵
The logarithm of a quotient is the difference of the logarithms.
3. log 𝑎 𝐴𝑛 = 𝑛log 𝑎 𝐴
The logarithm of a quantity raised to a power is the same as the power
times the logarithm of the quantity.
APPLICATION
Discussion on Logarithms and Seismology
The strength of an earthquake is measured in magnitude using a Richter scale which
is based on powers of 10. The Richter scale is a logarithmic scale.
10 minutes The magnitude (R) of an earthquake is given by the equation:
2 𝐸
𝑅 = 𝑙𝑜𝑔 4.40
3 10
where (E) in joules is the energy released by the earthquake. While 10 4.40 is the
energy released by a very small reference earthquake.

Group Activity
Situation: You belong to a team of volcanologists at Phivolcs. There was an
earthquake in Batangas and you are tasked to identify the magnitude of the
earthquake. Being the department in charge of the official reports on the
magnitude of earthquake, you are responsible to give an accurate report as it will
be reported all over the country via different forms of media (example, internet,
social media, radio, television, etc.). Good thing your team is an expert in the field,
you know the formula to use in this kind of situation. Your team is in charge of the
earthquake in Taysan, Batangas, which was reported to have released 10 11.9 joules
of energy. What is the magnitude of the earthquake in the Richter Scale?
You have 5 minutes to do the task as Mai Rodriguez of CNN Philippines is waiting
for the report from your team.
(A video via youtube.com will confirm the accuracy of the students’ answer)
