Reflective Journal Assignment #3: Diversity & Inclusion in the Workplace

Diversity in the workplace means representation of people from different backgrounds,

including different race, orientation, culture, thinking process and abilities. Inclusion, on the
other hand, refers to creating an environment where all employees feel valued, respected, and
supported. Working with a small group during this course helped me gain a deeper
understanding of the diverse experiences and perspectives that people bring to the table.
Through group discussions and collaborative projects, I learned how to appreciate different
viewpoints and how to communicate more effectively with people from diverse backgrounds.

If I attended a presentation on diversity and inclusion, it would mean that I would have to
prepare myself to apply these concepts in my future workplace. As an individual, I need to learn
how to recognize and appreciate differences among people and how to communicate and work
effectively with diverse teams. This requires me to develop empathy, open-mindedness, and a
willingness to learn from others. I recall my experience that I did not like to chat and talk with
team member and like to work and solve programming on my own. But after reading this, I feel
like I would have learnt different way to solve a same problem if I consulted and discussed with
my workmates. I would have looked it with different perspectives.

As a leader, diversity and inclusion mean that I have to create an environment where all
employees feel valued, respected, and included. This means that I need to hire staff from
diverse backgrounds, provide them with opportunities for growth and development, and
ensure that they have equal access to resources and support. Additionally, I need to learn how
to manage and work with diverse teams, which may require me to adapt my leadership style
and communication strategies to suit different personalities and backgrounds. For example – in
a workplace where only talented are rewarded, the other group of people may feel less
motivated to work. So I believe rewarding a whole team will be more motivating and beneficial
than rewarding a single person.

Learning about diversity and inclusion in the workplace has helped me grow both personally
and professionally. Personally, it has helped me realize my own prejudices, biases, and
assumptions and how they affect others. It has made me more open minded and taught me to
respect differences among people and how to communicate more effectively with diverse
teams.

Professionally, it has helped me understand the importance of creating an inclusive work

environment and the positive impact it can have on organizational culture and productivity. I
now recognize that diversity and inclusion are not just good to have but necessary to have.
Companies that have diversity in their work force have a more energetic and diverse workforce,
higher levels of innovation, and better financial performance.

New knowledge that I gained as a result of this learning includes understanding the various
caste, religion, race , gender etc. and how they overlap with each other. I also learned about
the different types of bias that exist in the workplace, such as confirmation bias, affinity bias,
and halo effect, and how they can impact decision-making and performance. Finally, I gained an
appreciation for the importance of creating a culture of inclusion that goes beyond mere
diversity metrics.

This learning will help me in my future career by allowing me to create a more inclusive work
environment and build stronger relationships with diverse teams. It will also help me become a
more effective communicator and leader, capable of adapting my style to suit different
personalities and backgrounds.

As a result of this learning, I plan to act in several ways. First, I plan to continue educating
myself on issues related to diversity and inclusion through reading books, attending workshops,
and engaging in conversations with people from diverse backgrounds. Second, I am looking
forward to opportunities I can get with diverse teams and take on leadership roles that require
me to manage and mentor people from different backgrounds. Finally, I plan to support for
diversity and inclusion in the workplace by raising awareness, promoting best practices, and
holding myself and others accountable for creating an inclusive work environment.

In conclusion, diversity and inclusion are essential components of a successful and thriving
workplace. By embracing diversity and creating a culture of inclusion, organizations can
progress to have better workplace and leaders should follow inclusive approach to have
dynamic and bigger workplace.
