Syllabus – M.Phil Programme [Total 3Semesters]


Semester One
Paper 1 - Research Methodology, SK- 901 [4 credits] -Dr. Rakesh Das(2), Dr. Gopikrishnan Reghu(2)
Aim – To understand the ancient and modern research techniques and methods.
1) Unit – 1 – Introduction to Research
i) Definition of Research, scope & limit and goals
ii) Area, types, steps of Research
iii) Selection of Topic, guide, method, framing of research question
2) Unit – 2 – Data Collection
i) Source and types of data
ii) Methods of data collection
iii) Analysis of data
3) Unit – 3 - Presentation of Thesis
i) Synopsis, research paper, dissertation, thesis etc
ii) Language and structure, chapter division etc
iii) Appendix, footnotes, quotations, bibliography, index
iv) Proof correction methods
4) Unit – 4 – Traditional areas of research, Modern areas of research, General introduction and review of some works,
Review of research works and papers.

Medium of instruction – Sanskrit


Mode of teaching – Lecture, Special lecture, seminar, workshop, presentation etc
Evaluation – Written exam at the end of semester. Internal assessment will consist of seminars and assignments.

Paper 2 – Manuscriptology, SK-902 [4 credits]- Dr. Gopikrishnan Reghu (2), Prof. Nabnarayan Bandopadhyaya (2)
Aim- To give an understanding about editing and preservation techniques of manuscripts and ancient writing system.
1) Unit – 1
i) Scripts origin and development
ii) Introduction to ancient scripts – Brahmi
iii) Introduction to writing techniques and tools in ancient times
2) Unit – 2
i) Special introduction to some ancient scripts like Grantha, Nandi nagari, Sarada, Nevari etc
ii) Reading and writing skills of the scripts have to be developed
3) Unit – 3 – Editing of Manuscripts
i) Basics of critical edition (Transcription and collation, critical apparatus, stemma codem, etc.)
ii) Date of Manuscript – various methods
iii) Errors in Manuscript and its corrections
iv) Deciding the correct rendering and its presentation
4) Unit – 4 – General outlook in the fields of Manuscriptology
i) Review of some manuscript editions
ii) Introduction to Manuscript library, NMM, NCC etc

Evaluation – Written exam at the end of semester. Internal assessment will consist of seminars and assignments.

Paper 3 –Tools and Techniques of Knowledge representation in Sanskrit, SK-903 [4 credits] – Dr. Nagaraja Bhat(2), Dr.
Rakesh Das (1),Dr. Gopikrishnan Reghu (1)
Aim – To give an overall understanding about the ancient techniques and terminologies by which research works has been
done so far.
1) Unit - 1 – Technical terms of Sanskrit used in various Sastras
i) Nyaya, Vyakaran, Mimamsa, Sahitya etc
ii) Vedic terminologies used in Samhita, Brahmana, Siksha, Pratishakhya, Nirukta etc
2) Unit – 2 – Methods of propagating theories in various Sastras.
i) Adhikarana
ii) Vada
iii) Jnapaka

iv) Parishkara etc


3) Unit – 3 – Nyaya and pramanas used in Sastra
i. Nyaya used in Sastra – Sastriya and Loukika. General introduction, some instances meaning etc
ii. Pramanas used in various sastras
4) Unit – 4 – Adoption of Modern technology in Sanskrit Research
i. Diacritic script
ii. Online tools for sanskrit- websites and tools like samsadhani online dictionary.
iii. DTP presentation tools

Evaluation – Written exam at the end of semester. Internal assessment will consist of seminar and assignments.

Paper 4 - Sarvadarsanasangraha, SK-911 [4 credits]


Aim- To give an introduction to the various system of thoughts preserved in ancient texts.
1. Unit -1-Boudha darsana – Dr. Venkataramana Bhat
2. Unit-2- Mimamsa darsana - Dr. Nagaraja Bhat
3. Unit-3- Advaitha vedantha - Dr. Nagaraja Bhat
4. Unit-5- Vyakarana darsana – Dr. Neeraj Kumar Bhargave

Evaluation – Written exam at the end of semester. Internal assessment will consist of seminar and assignments.

Semester two-
Paper 5 – Foundation of Research in Philosophy, SK-912 [4 credits]
Or
Foundation of Research in Sanskrit Vyakarana, SK- 921 – [4 credits]
Aim – To get acquainted with the research techniques and topics in the specific field of subject
Students will be given some selected topics and text where he should do self study and have to present papers and
assessments on these. This will be student specific work and to be done by the guide
Semester three-

1) घ शोधप्रबनन [16 credits]


Dissertation SK - 951 लघ श
Note- Dissertation should be written in Sanskrit only and should be within 80-100 pages. After valuation of dissertation there
will be open defense.
