guidelines for the essay and in-class presentation

Both the in-class presentation and the essay assess:

1. Critical thinking
2. Communication skills—oral and written—in the target language (giving our case,
Chinese is used but bilingualism is allowed)
3. Required knowledge of the course
4. Ability to write academically

The presentation is a reading report of one the course reading materials you sign up for. In the
report you should not only summarize the main points, but also be able to point to its main
argument (main points of interests to you, to us as participants in this particular course), and
pose a set of your own analytical questions. The discussions and feedbacks from the class
and the teacher will help you understand these questions and develop ideas from them. These
in turn can be the bases for your essay, which will incorporate other reading materials from
the course, or your own research. The essay should address a main thesis of your own and be
supported by details from our readings. Please see the final essay rubric for marking criteria.

Further, you will be assessed for:

1. Mastery of course and related materials (shown through examples )

2. Clarity
3. Focus (the building up of a central thesis/argument through a set of analytical
questions)
4. Adequate presentation (both for the presentation and the essay)—beginning, body
(development), and conclusion
5. Independent and original work
6. Use of reliable academic refeerence
