SAFETY VALVE CONTROL SYSTEM

I. GENERAL DESCRlPllON

This equipmentis a hydraulic control unit designedto accuratelycontrol safety valve

operationsinstalledin a wellhead.

The feature of this unit is that production flow lines are monitored with the use of
PressureSensors, through which the pressureis lead to the hydraulic unit and the safety
valves are controlled accordingly, both electrically and hydraulically through the use of
electricalpressureswitches.

Two electrical circuits, one as a power circuit and the other as a control circuit are
provided and a battery backup which provides electricity to feed the control circuit for
seven(7) daysin caseof a powerfailure. Eachwell canoperateindependentlybecauseof
control unitsto be installedin parallel electrically.

Hydraulic control unit design is an expandablefeature for a total of nine (9) well
operationsin the future.

ll. CONTROL PERFORMANCE

1. During Normal Operation:

On the low-pressurecircuit side, the pressureis controlledaround 500 bar by the

combinedfunction of the pressuretransmitterand the motor switch. The MSSV
and WSSV are in open position when respective pressure switches detect
hydraulic pressurein supplylines.

On the high-pressurecircuit side, the pressureis controlledaround700 bar by the

combinedfunction of the pressuretransmitterand the motor switch. The SSSVis
openedwhenthe SSSVpressureswitch detectshydraulic pressurein supplyline.

2. When380 VAC Electric Supplyis Suspended:

If temporarily suspended, though the electric motor cannotbe operated, the back

up battery immediately takes over and continuessupplying current through the
control circuits without interruption. When the regular electric supply is
reinstated, whole systemswill be automaticallybackto normal condition.

The systemcan be operatedfor approximatelyseven(7) days with the use of

accumulator and battery in case the regular electric supply is suspended.
However, the accumulatorswill re-openall valves of three wells after the main
power supplyfailure/suspended.
---~--

1 -3. In Case of Emergency:

In case either one of the circuit pressures, which control the SSSV, MSSV and
WSSV, exceeds the tolerated pressure range, the pressure switch encounters for
activating the solenoid valve which closes the MSSV and WSSV. Then after one
(1) minute, the SSSV comes to the closed position. Three (3) fusible plugs
(100°C) are to be installed for each Wellhead Control Panel including appropriate
tubing and fittings for fusible plug loop installation.

When any of the fusible plugs melt due to fire, all wells will shut-in following the
closing sequence."wssv and MSSV" will close immediately, then SSSV closes
after an adjustable time delay". When any of the panel mounted ESD buttons are
activated, all wells will shut-in per closing sequence.

4. The Performance of the Remote Control Panel

4.1 The Remote Control Panel is to be located in a safe area.

I 4.2 All the wells (3 wells) are superintended by the alarm buzzer and the
i alarm light to something unusual.

_ If something unusual is happening, the SSSV, MSSV and WSSV perform

the closing sequence. Meanwhile, the buzzer is activating and the alarm
light is flashing. There is a pushbutton to stop the alarm buzzer.

4.3 The SSSV, MSSV and WSSV of three (3) wells, independently or
together, can be closed by operation of the pushbutton on the WCP. But
the closed SSSV, MSSV and WSSV cannot be opened by the operation
from the RCP. In order to open the closed SSSV, MSSV and WSSV, it is
necessary to operate the corresponding hand valve at the Well Control
Panel.

5. Resetting of Control Circuit:

The Control Circuit must be reset after troubleshooting and well(s) shutdown.
Control circuit resetting shall be made manually after the hydraulic unit is
operated.

I A. Cabinet
Arrangement
The cabinet is fabricated of 316 stainless steel, 12 gauge and provided with rear doors,
with locking facilities in open position. The doors are executed with espagnolet locks.

The cabinet is divided into two sections, a central part and a module section. The central
part supplies hydraulic pressure to the module section. The panel can easily be extended
to control twelve (12) wells by adding module sections four (4) wells per Section 0 using
the same central part.

, B. Hydraulic
System
-Electric/Hydraulic
System pressure is supplied by two (2) electrical driven Class 1 Division 2 radial plunger
pumps. One pump will be used for the control pressure (4 bar) and the MSSV/wSSV
output, the other pump is used for the SSSV output.

A hand pump will be included in the system to operate in case of an eventual power
failure. High and low pressure lines can be charged independently by using the 3-way
ball valve.

Hydraulic regulators are installed to adjust hydraulic output pressure. Operating of the
hydraulic operated control valves must be done by means of a hydraulic relay valve.

Accumulators are provided to compensate pressure fluctuations in the system and will
also act as a buffer. This buffer will allow the systemto Staypressurized during 380 V AC
power losses. Under normal conditions, this buffer should keep the system pressurized
for seven (7) days. In case of an eventual ESD, the volume of the accumulators will not
be enough to reopen all three (3) wells.

The system is protected against overpressurizing by the use of relief valves in both
pressure lines.

.Gauges mounted downstream and upstream of the control valves at each hydraulic line
are installed to monitor pressure locally.

Gauges are equipped with safety glass and designed such that no hydraulic oil can enter
the front side of the gauge. Each gauge is provided with a "built-in snubber" that will
prevent the gauge from any damage caused by pressure fluctuations.

Pressure switches located at each hydraulic line will show the valve status in the control
center in the control room. Ball valves are installed for maintenance and testing facilities.

A temperature fusible plug line is installed at the "ESD" valve with a pressure switch to
monitor pressure in the control room. Ball valves are installed for maintenance and
testing facilities.

C. CONTROL SYSTEM -Electric/Hydraulic

The control systempressmeis suppliedby the centralpart.

The systempressme, which is controlled by a hydraulic systemregulatorand a hydraulic

supplygauge,is setat approximatelyfom (4) bar.

Before operatingthe system, the central EmergencyShutdown(ESD) solenoidand relay

valve haveto be energized.

Pushingthe ESD valve and/orde-energizingthe solenoidvalve will closeall valves of all

wells.

Major componentswill be identified by the useof tag plates.

Opening of the Valves.

Before operating the valves, the Wellhead ESD solenoid valve (module) has to be
energizedremotely. After operatingthe ESD relay valve (module)the SCSVwill open.

.Before the Master Valve and the Wing Valve can be opened, the ESD valve and the
~ solenoidvalve haveto be energized.

Closing of the Valves.

The valveswill closeafter:

.Pushing the ESD valve in the centralpart , all valves (MSSV, WSSV and SSSV)
of all three (3) wells connectedwill close. This is a local signal by pushing the
knob. (Local ESDthree (3) wells).

.De-energizing the ESD solenoid valve in the central part, all valves (MSSV,
WSSV and SSSV)of all three (3) wells connectedwill close.This is a remote24
VDC signal from the Remote ~ontrol r.anel, "RCP". This signal has the same
function asthe ESDvalve asmentionedabove.(RemoteESDthree (3) wells).

.In caseof loss of fusible plug pressme, all valves (MSSV, WSSV and SSSV)of
all three (3) wells connectedwill close. This signal has the same function as
mentionedin above ESD valve description. The control pressmeof the fusible
loop is connectedto the pilot port of the local ESDvalve. Whenfusible plug fires,

.
control pressmeis lost and the ESD valve will trip and all valve s (MSSV,
WSSV, and SSSV)of all three (3) wells connectedwill close.Fire will therefore
causea local ESD signal.

, .,,"'.
,~!

'
I I

...Pushing the Wellhead ESD Relay Valve situated in the module, all valves of
~ ~ well will close. (Local ESDone (1) well).

.Tripping of eitherthe high or the low-pressurepilot, the MSSv and WSV of the
relatedwell will close.

.The MSSV and WSSV can also be closedremotely by de-energizingthe solenoid

valve in the module (Item 06 drw. Module). De-energizingcan be done by a
remote 24 VDC signal from RCP. This valve hasthe samefunction as Item 07
Module. (RemoteESD one (1) well). After the close signal, the valveswill close
immediatelyandthe SCSSVafterthe pre-settiming of the time delay.

If the valves are closedremotely, the haveto be manuallyresetat the panel to re-

open.

NOTE: Each module section controls one (1) wellhead and its
relatedvalve (MSSV, WSSV and SSSV).Pushingthe ESD
valve in the module will thereforecausea one (1) wellhead
. shutdown.

For a total plant shutdown, three (3) wellheadshaveto be pushed.CentralPart has

.to be remotelyde-energized.

.The motor-starter panel (380 V AC) includes two (2) motor groups. Each group is
provided with current and thermal protection. Both motor starters will be provided with a
"H-O-A" switch mounted in the door of the panel.

This switch provides the possibility to manually start/stop the motor. Furthermore, both
motor starters will be provided with an indicating lamp in the door for status "run"
indication.

!:!:P..S.

A separateUPS system will be supplied, including a 24 VDC battery pack with 20 cell
NiCad and a rectifier 380 V AC -50 H:lJ24VDC 250A, suitable for a load of 9 Ah and
simultaneously charging the batteries. Charging time is approximately eight (8) hours.
The battery pack must be assembledat location and is mounted in a battery box.

The battery should be installed in a dry and clean room. Direct sunlight should be
avoided. (Refer to Battery Specifications located in the document package.)

Best performance is achieved at a temperature between 10° and 35°.

During the last part of high rate charging, the battery is emitting gases. At normal float
.charge, the gas evolution is very small, but some ventilation is necessary.

Remote Control Panel "RCP"I

"", The remote control panel is designed to be located in the control room (safe area). The

", input and output signals from/to the wellhead control panels and other panels (e.g. MCC
.Ii and ~&G) are.assumed to be .non-IS. This ~eans that no safety b~ers and/~r iso~ators

,[ equipped with isolators and trip amplifiers to obtain three (3) levels of "alarm".
~:

.The "high" switch-point will be used to stop the pump/motor at high pressure.

.The "high-high" switch-point will be used to de-energize the ESD solenoid valve
and cause an ESD. (All valves of all three wells will close.)
.The "low' switch-point will be used to start the pump/motor at low pressure.

.The "low-low" switch-point will be used for an alarm on the panel front. (Light).

The indicating lamps and pushbuttons will be located in the door of the panel. All
indication lamps will be provided with a lamp-test facility.

. The motor control will pick up a 4-20 mA signal from the pressure transmitter and
convert it to a start/stop signal through the motor starter panel to the elec.tric motor/pump
combination. This motor control can also generate a low-pressure alarm SIgnal.~

.SSSV OPENINGPROCEDURE
(If different shut-in tubing pressure is in excessof 4000#)

Note: This valve has a protection feature that minimi7es the risk of damageto the closure
mechanism.Due to this feature, the valve will not open unlesspressureis acrossthe
closure device. The opening procedureinstructions must be followed closely to assure
properresults.

1. Pressuremust be equalized completely acrossthe closure mechanism. This is

done by pressurizingthe tubing string before attemptingto open the valve. To
openTRSV with pressureshutin belowthe valve, proceedasfollows.

2. When operating a multi-well platform from one (1) Control Manifold, all the
SCSSV's may be closed simultaneously, but each SCSV must be opened
individually.

3. To opena valve, close off all control line accessto SCSSV'sin other wells and
closethe wing valve.

4. Fill the tubing above the valve with clean fluid or gas. Pressurethe tubing to
1,000PSI belowthe shutin pressure.

5. Refer to the Engineering Data Sheet for the opening pressureof the TRSV.
Determinethe control line pressureto be appliedasfollows:

Control Line Pressure = OpeningPressure + ShutIn Pressure

Control line pressuremay be increasedto a maximumof 4,000 PSI abovethe shut

in pressureif desired.

6. Apply the control line pressuredeterminedin Step 5. Set the regulator on the
control manifold pumpto maintainthis pressure.

7. Increasethe tubing pressureuntil there is an indication of pumping through the

closuremechanism. At this point, the TRSV will be open.

8. Referto the "Guidelinesfor Hold OpenPressure".Setthe regulatoron the control

manifold pump to maintain the recommendedhold openpressureon the TRSV
during production.

Note: During non-productionoperationssuchas completion, testing, acidizing, etc. the control

line pressuremaybe increasedasoutlined in the "Guidelinesfor Hold OpenPressure".

6 -OPTIONS

..The equipment has these options fitted only if they have been specified in the initial order.
~ Refer to the customer drawings.

6.1 -RELAY CARDS (AS)

Relay cards AS provide remote signalling of individual alarms. Each card hasfourrelays. The fustrelay
card AS is connected to card Al by a link cable. The second card AS is connected to to the first. A
maximum of four relay boards can be connected to card AI.

6.2 -BATTERY TEMPERATURE COMPENSATION

If lead-acid batteries are used, the floating charge voltage must be temperature-compensated. The
", 'temperature .coefficient with reference to the battery ambient temperature can be defined by software
in the system set-up (factory setting).

.6.3 -MANUAL VOLTAGE AND/OR CURRENT ADJUSTMENTS

--Option reserved for batteryless systems.

When this option is fitted, the rectifier output voltage and current are set by the operator; the charger
operates as an adjustable power supply.

Rectifier output voltage and current adjustment through the ADJ menu.
The voltage can be set between an upper limit (max) and a lower limit (min) set in the system set-up
(factory setting).
The current can be set between 0 and the maximum current of the rectifier.

6.4 -RS-232 OUTPUT (A71)

This serial interface between the rectifier and e.g. a computer or a printer is connected to the RS-232
port of the CCU card (AI).
A software tool "SPARC" is available for remote connection to the rectifier.
-
..A l~e driver elec~cally isola~esthe recti~er from the peripheral device. A second line driver is
~ proVIded for the penpheral deVIce(RS-232 mput).

In case of using the public telephone line, a modem is available.

The modem requires no power supply since it derives the voltage from the telephone line.

6.5 -PROTOCOL CONVERTER

If the customer uses a communication protocol that differs from the protocol in the rectifiers, SAFT
I is able to supply a so-called protocol converter.
This protocol converter is able to translate
the MODthe customer protocol to rectifiers
the protocol used in converter.
the rectifiers.
.' For example, it is possible to use BUS protocol with the using this

If other protocols are needed, SAFT is able to detennine if the required protocol can be integrated into
the converter.

6.6 -MULTIDROP CONNECTION

If a more than one rectifier should be connected to the same communication bus, a so-called multidrop
configuration can be used.
This multidrop configuration allows the paralleling of maximum 32 rectifiers using a four wire RS485
connection.
The rectifiers are acting as slaves and the central computer as the master.
By giving the different rectifier different slave numbers, it is possible to command each individual
rectifier.

6.7 -LOADSHARING

If two rectifiers are connectedin parallel and loadsharing is required, the rectifiers can be programmed
to perform this function.
The load sharing is passive and is based up on changing the slope of the rectifier output voltage stability.
Typical resolution: :i: 10 to 12 %.
Maximum slope regulation: 2.5%.

6.8 -INTERIOR LIGHTING AND AC SOCKET OUTLET

The cabinet can be fitted with a 230V fluorescent tube turning on automatically'when the door is
opened.
An AC socket outlet is mounted on the terminal block. It delivers a voltage corresponding to the supply
voltage.

6.9 -HIGH-VOLTAGE TRIP

.
The high-voltage trip protects the battery an.4the load from excessive DC voltages during normal
operation. As standard, the rectifier is electronically shut down by inhibiting the thyristor gate drive
signals. --

56 ..-
BN 091459/10/G
-
If this option is fitted, the trip signalcausesthemains contactorto drop out The trip level is setin the
systemset-up(factory setting).
The alann is of the latchingtype, so that the rectifier staysoff until the operatorhasresetthe alarm.

, 6.10--LOW-VOLTAGE
TRIP(END-OF-DISCHARGE
CONTACTOR)
,

To protect the battery from overdischargingand the load from too Iowa DC voltage, the battery is
disconnectedfrom the load ata setvoltagelevel. This level is just below thatcorrespondingto the end
, of the battery reservetime. The batteryis disconnectedby a contactorin the batteryline.
When the mainsvoltagereturns, therectifier suppliesthe load;the low voltage alarm'is-automatically
reset,and the batteryis reconnected.

6.11-SUPPLEMENTARY
PROTECTIVE
DEVICES

Protectivedevices(fusesand circuit breakers)canbe providedfor:

-the mains input,
-the battery lines,
-the load lines.

6.12-ANALOGMETERS

The digital measurementsaresupplementedby analogmeters(on the front panel)providing voltage

-and currentreadingsfor:
-the mains input,
-the battery,
-the load.

6.13-BLOCKING
DIODE

A blocking diode is connectedto therectifier output. It is usedto isolatea faulty unit, especiaIIywhen
rectifiers areparalleled.

6.14-CABINET
HEATERI

The cabinetsare fitted with heatingresistorssuppliedvia a circuit breaker.

-.The heatercircuit mustbe suppliedwith 11OVAC to 230VAC during storageand duringperiodswhen
~ the rectifier is not operating.

6.15 -FUSE TRIP ALARM

A fuse trip alarm card monitors the main power fuses.

This card sensesthe voltage across the fuse. Each card can monitor three fuses. If one of the fuses is
open, the card sendsa signal to control card Al and an alarm is displayed. Red lights on the card indicate
, which fuse is open. The card is bipolar; the polarity of the voltage across the fuse does not matter.

6.16 -HIGH RIPPLE VOLTAGE ALARM

The DC voltage ripple (AC component) is measured via card A28. If the ripple is greater than a preset
.--level, the card sends a signal to control card Al and the corresponding alarm is displayed.

6.17 -EMI FILTER

The rectifier is fitted with an inputEMI filter. This filter filters out conducted interference in accordance
with the EN 55011 standard. To avoid undesirable radiation, the rectifier cabinet must be properly.
earthed and the doors must be closed.

6.18 -DIODE STABILIZER OR "CEMF" (A201)

~
A diode stabilizer is used if the DC output voltage is too high for the load.
The number of diodes depends on the required voltage drop.

Installation and Operating Instructions

IMPORTANT RECOMMENDATIONS:

Never allow a flame of fire to come near the battery. The electrolyte is harmful to
skin and to eyes in particular. In the event of contact with skin or eyes, wash
immediately with running water. If eyes are affected, flood with water and
obtain immediate medical attention. Wear goggles and gloves when handling
electrolyte and cells. Never use sulfuric acid or acidified water (pH lower than 5)
~ to top-up electrolyte as acid can destroy the battery. Use tools with insulated
~ handles.

1. Receiving the Shipment

Unpack the battery immediately upon arrival. Do not overturn the
package.

.If the battery shipped filled, remove immediately the plastic transport
seals if used. The battery is then ready for installation.

.If the battery is shipped discharged and empty, do not remove the
plastic transport seals until ready to fill the battery.

The battery must never be charged with the plastic transport seal
in place as this can cause permanent damage.

2. Storage
Store the battery indoors in a dry and clean location.

.A fully discharged, emptied battery with its plastic transport seal can
be stored for many years.

A .A filled battery can be stored for a maximum of 1 year.

T It shall initially be fully charged.

,
3. Installation

3.1. Location

Install the battery in a drum and clean room. Avoid direct sunlight,
strong daylight and heat. The battery will give the best
performance and maximum service life when the ambient
temperature is between 10° C to 35°C.

3.2. Ventilation

During the last part of high-rate charging, the battery is emitting

gases (oxygen-hydrogen mixture). At normal float-charge, the gas
evolution is very small but some ventilation is necessary. Note that
special regulations for ventilation may be valid in your area
depending on the application.

3.3. Mounting

Verify that cells are correctly interconnected with the appropriate

polarity. The battery connection to load should be with nickel-
plated cable lugs. Recommended torque's for connecting screws are:

M 5 = 7.5:i: 0.8 N.m

M 8 = 20:i: 2 N.m
M 10 = 30:i: 3 N.m

The connectors and terminal screws should be corrosion-protected

by coating with a thin layer of neutral Vaseline or anti-corrosion oil.
Remove the transport seals and close the vent.

3.4. Electrolyte

The electrolyte to be used I: E22/1.20. The typical specific gravity

and tolerance for the electrolyte specific gravity in the cell at
maximum level are 1.20 :r.0.03 at + 20°C.

Q Cells delivered filled:

Check the level of electrolyte. The cells must have a level of

electrolyte above the plates. If it is not the case, adjust the level of
electrolyte to 5.mm above the plate tops with water.

"~,ji
,,;'t ' I
' ,;..",~
ic:;ll~i,
, ",,;

, Q Cells delivered empty:

Fill empty cells to 5 mm above the plate tops with electrolyte. After
the first charging either 10 hours at 0.2 C5A or 20 hours at 1.55
V/cell with max current 0.2 C5A, wait at least 4 hours after end of
charge and adjust with level to the high level mark by adding
electrolyte.

When the cells are charged again after this adjustment, the
electrolyte level can be above the high level mark. Discharge the
cells to 1.0V/cell at 0.2C5A and then perform a commissioning
charge (see section4).

3.5. Cell Oil

On top of the electrolyte floats a layer of cell oil, approximately 5

mm thick. When the cells are delivered empty, the oil is already in
the cell.

4. Commissioning charge

.A good first charge is important. Charge at constant current is preferable.

4.1. Cells stored less than 1 year: charge 15 h with the current in the
table.

4.2. Cells stored more than 1 year or cells which have been filled
from discharge and empty:

Charge 15 h, discharge to 1.0 V/cell, charge 10 h, all the time with

the current in the table. When it is not possible to charge at
constant current, the charge may be done with constant voltage: 20
to 30 h at 1.65 V/cell, if the current limit is approximately the same
as in the table. If it is lower, charge for longer time.

When the charger maxim urn voltage settings are too low to supply,
constant current charging divide the battery into two parts to be
charged individually. The battery can now be put in service.

.5. Charging in service

.Continuous parallel operation, with occasional battery discharge.

Recommended charging voltage:

Q for two level charge:
.Float level = 1.40 -1.42 V/cell;
.High level = 1.45 -1.70 V/cell.

A high voltage will increase the speed and efficiency of the

recharging:

Q for single level charge:

.1.43-1.50 V/cell.

.Buffer operation, where the load exceeds the charger rating.

Recommended charging voltage:
1.50 -1.60 V/cell

.Discontinuous operation, with short heavy-current discharges or

other shallow discharges.
.8 h with the current in the table of 15 h at 1.65 V/cell.

6. Periodic Maintenance

Keep the battery clean using only water.

Do not use a wire brush or solvents of any kind. Vent caps can be rinsed in
clean water if necessary.

.Check the electrolyte level. Never let the level fall below the lower
mark. Use only distilled or deionized water to top up. Experience will
tell the time interval between tipping up.

.Check alleast once yearly that all connectors are tight. The connectors
and terminal screws should be corrosion-protected by coating with a
thin layer of neutral Vaseline or anti-corrosion oil.

.Check the charging voltage. In parallel operation, it is of great

importance that the recommended charging voltage remains
unchanged. The charger should be checked at least once yearly.
.High water consumption of the battery is usually caused by improper
~ voltage setting of the charger.

4
7. Changing electrolyte

In most stationary battery applications, the electrolyte will retain its

effectiveness for the life of the battery. However, under special battery
operating conditions, of the electrolyte is found to be carbonated, the
battery performance can be restored by replacing the electrolyte. The
electrolyte type to be used for replacement in these cells is: E13/1.21.
Refer to "Electrolyte Instructions".
