Kabelmetal Nigeria Plc
History
For over 50 years Kabelmetal Nigeria Plc has been admired for its cable making expertise.
Because of our drive for excellence in quality of products and passion for innovation, we have
established ourselves as the leader and pioneer in the Nigerian cable market.
The company has its manufacturing facility and head office located at Ikeja, Lagos and is the
largest manufacturer of power, control and instrumentation cables in the West African sub
region.
Benefitting from the parent company’s cable making expertise of over 100 years and local
manufacturing experience, Kabelmetal strengthens the nerves and sinews of the Nigerian
economy.
At the beginning of the 1980-s the development of cross linked polyethylene (XLPE) for low
voltage insulated cables opened the door to new market segments including the oil and gas
market. The introduction of air field lighting cables and cables with enhanced fire performance
features over the following years further fortified our product range and expanded our
customer base.
Kabelmetal Nigeria Plc is the first cable manufacturer in Nigeria, certified according to ISO
9000 in the year 2000. We are also Nigerian Industrial Standards (NIS) Diamond Award
winner. Our products are in conformance to IEC standards, Nigerian Industrial Standards and
BS standards for some specific products.
Kabelmetal as pioneer in the industry and the first to be ISO certified way back in year 2000, has
followed and adopted the revisions through the years up to the current ISO 9001:2015
standard. This yet positions Kabelmetal as the first organisation within the cable manufacturing
industry in Nigeria and one of the very few across the globe to be certified to the new ISO
9001:2015 standard.
Increased globalization has changed the way businesses are run. With increased expectations
from customers and other interested parties, and with more access to information, today’s wider
society has a stronger voice than ever before. Kabelmetal underscores these changes in order to
remain relevant and be responsive to the emerging business environment.
Kabelmetal Nigeria Plc is the most advanced manufacturer of cables in the West Africa Sub
Saharan region. With our manufacturing facility and head office located in Ikeja Industrial
Estate, Ikeja Lagos and distributor outlets across the Nigeria, we are well represented
nationwide.
Our product scope covers the whole range of low voltage power, control and instrumentation
cables. Cables for power distribution and several special cables supplement our product
portfolio.

Flame Retardant, Low Smoke Halogen Free
and Fire Resistant Cables
Practice has shown that a single PVC insulated and sheathed cable, even when laid in horizontal
position, does not propagate fire, i.e. it is flame retardant. But this is not guaranteed when several
cables are laid parallel or even bunched together and fire strikes. For that reason, test procedures
have been developed to determine and categorize fire behavior depending on the way cables are
bunched together, how much combustible material is contained and easily contributing to the fire as
well as the method of laying cables and the intensity of fire.
Beside flame propagation, developing fumes and smoke have been examined and test procedures
were developed – and are still developed and fine tuned – to minimize danger for life and property
from cables engulfed in fire.
For offices, hospitals, airports etc. where large number of people are concentrated, fire performance
of electric cables must match other security- and health safety measures.
In line with this, the following important parameters for cables have been established:
Flame propagation of bunched and/or parallel laid up cables are exposed to burners for a period of
time. After the burners are removed, affected portion of cables burnt shall not exceed a specified
length.
Insulation materials contain Halogens; for example: PVC contains Chloride. Other Polymers contain
Bromine and Fluor, which increase ignition temperature and under influence of water or humid
surroundings in fire situations, these corrosive gases change into acid (HCL) which are dangerous to
life.
Therefore HALOGEN FREE materials and materials with LOW CONTENT of HALOGENES
were developed.
Smoke not only hinders extinction of fire because it limits vision at the burning site but also
complicates evacuation of people from affected structures. Materials of LOW SMOKE DENSITY are
used for cables.
(D) Continued functionality of electric conductivity of the cable in case of fire. This parameter actually
characterizes FIRE RESISTANT cables. Fire resistant cable guaranty continuous functionality over a
period of time under burning condition.

Instructions for laying cables
Bending radius:
During the unreeling, the bending radius shall be at least, ‘’twice the static bending radius
(as specified in our technical data sheets)’’.
Pulling strength:
The pulling strengths applied directly to the copper or aluminum cores of the cables should
not exceed:
2
·5 daN/mm of cross section for copper conductors
2
·3 daN/mm of cross section for aluminium conductors
The pulling must be regular without shocking and continuously checked by a dynamometer
(especially when using a winch).
Cables unreeling:
The drum shall be settled on jacks by using a spindle through the central hole of the drum.
The unreeling speed shall be monitored at any moment
