EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Internship at CMC Limited, Kolkata was a great exposure to the industry. After going
through summer training, This was firsthand experience of how an industry as well as HR
department functions.

INTRODUCTION OF PROJECT

This project is about the HR Policies and Placement in CMC Limited. The HR Policies in
an organization helps every individual to raise his/her potential in all facets by helping him
to be satisfied and secured about his present and future.

PROJECT TITLE

The title of the project is “HR Policies and Placement in CMC Limited”. As the name
indicates it is the study of the HR Policies prevalent in the organization and the placement
structure in CMC Ltd.

ORGANISATION

CMC Limited is an Information Technology services, consulting and software company


having its Headquarters in New Delhi, India. CMC is part of the TATA Group and is a
subsidiary of Tata Consultancy Services. CMC was incorporated on December 26, 1975,
as the 'Computer Maintenance Corporation Private Limited'. The Government of
India held 100 per cent of the equity share capital and owned by government of India. On
August 19, 1977, it was converted into a public limited company. In October 2001, CMC
was privatized by the Government of India in a sale to India-based Tata Consultancy
Services (TCS), the largest software services company in Asia. It also features on top ten
companies in India.

INTRODUCTION
The working forces of CMC all play a significant role in the continuous progress of the
company. Hence it is essential to keep them motivated and keep their spirits high. The
broad objective of the study was to provide the working forces of CMC with some new
companies for student placement.
Therefore in order to have a deep knowledge and understanding about what should
constitute the placement schemes for the working force; a study was conducted (with the
help of questionnaires) with the help of 100 students in CMC academy Kolkata. “Right
person for the right job” the basic principle in giving placements to the candidates.

ABOUT THE TOPIC


HUMAN RESOURCE POLICIES
Human Resource Policies refers to principles and rules of conduct which “formulate,
redefine, break into details and decide a number of actions” that govern the relationship
with employees in the attainment of the organization objectives.

HR Policies cover the following:


1. Policy of hiring people with due respect to factors like reservations, sex, marital status,
and the like.
2. Policy on terms and conditions of employment-compensation policy and methods, hours
of work, overtime, promotion, transfer, lay-off and the like.
3. Policy with regard medical assistance-sickness benefits, ESI and company medical
benefits.
4. Policy regarding housing, transport, uniform and allowances.
5. Policy regarding training and development-need for, methods of, and frequency of
training and development.
6. Policy regarding industrial relations, trade-union recognition, collective bargaining,
grievance procedure, participative management and communication with workers.

FORMULATING POLICIES
There are five principal sources for determining the content and meaning of policies:
1. Past practice in the organization.
2. Prevailing practice in rival companies.
3. Attitudes and philosophy of founders of the company as also its directors and the top
management.
4. Attitudes and philosophy of middle and lower management.
5. The knowledge and experience gained from handling countless personnel problems on
day to day basis

PLACEMENTS IN CMC

The placement cell provides active assistance to students in finding jobs. Placement
assistance is provided to them on successful completion of the programme. The placement
cell has successfully placed many students in top 20 IT organizations. Apart from technical
training in various software & hands-on project work, CMC LTD helps to get a foothold
in the booming IT & ITeS industry. CMC assists its students in finding a job. Here’s how:

Workplace skills Training


CMC LTD Career course includes 9 months of Workplace skills training that develops
English & Soft Skills.

Internship

As part of its Career course, CMC LTD places students with various companies. The 1-

year work experience gives students a chance to be in an office/ workplace & work on the
company real projects. Students who perform well during the internship are often offered
a full-time job by the company later on.
Placement Workshops
CMC LTD conducts workshops on handling job interviews, aptitude tests & Group
Discussions. Useful skills like resume writing, presentation skills & time management are
also developed.
Job Fairs
Last year, CMC LTD organized job fairs in Delhi, Mumbai, and Kolkata & Kochi. Many
firms from IT & ITES fields participated in these fairs & short-listed 1300 participants for
various IT job roles.
From time to time, CMC LTD conducts such job fairs all over the country to connect
students with companies looking for talented students.

STRATEGIES APPLIED FOR ACHIEVING THE TASK ASSIGNED


Client Search
For placement of the students in different companies first we search for the different
companies
from internet from various sites.

Cold Calling
Cold calling means to approach the clients without taking prior appointments. I have done
lots of cold calling. I visited different companies and industries. I got a great experience as
I interacted with different kind of peoples. Even I learned lots of things regarding
convincing the clients.

Client Visit
I visited different companies and industries to get contact details from them and to convince
them to place our students in their companies. I got to interact with many HR of different
IT companies.

Role Plays
Role play is a kind of play or say drama which is been presented in front of a group of
peoples and that is even in rural areas where people don’t understand the face to face
interaction or any another explanation. Role play is done basically in local language and
we are planning to do the same as our role play is all set to do.

Data Collection
My third strategy is to collect data as many as possible from different sources. So for this
data collection I have visited different colleges to get the data of retired people. I went to
colleges to get the data of the graduate students who would the good prospect for our
company.

Conducted test
There were three rounds first was written test, technical round, group discussion followed
by personal interview. With the help of my seniors I conducted admission tests of Cjet
candidates.

discussion rounds and on the basis of this we were able to analysis the communication
skills of the candidates.

I made questionnaire to take feedback from the students for the betterment of CMC. I went
to different classes and interacted with the students to know about their problems and
suggestions.

Canopy
Canopy is the kind of activity in which we do arrange a small Business Opportunity
Presentation. We select particular area and in this area we give invitations to the people
residing in this area and then we arrange the presentation. We did our canopy in the areas
like Park street, Garia, and Konnagar and tried to cover as many areas as possible to
promote CMC LTD.

Recruitment Assistance for Companies


CMC LTD EDUCATION AND TRAINING DEVISION has Placements Team which has
helped hundreds of IT companies across the country find talented candidates for IT jobs.
Short listing candidates
CMC LTD has a full-fledged Placements Team operating from offices across India. The
Team is in touch with graduating students at all CMC LTD E&T centres. On receiving
recruitment request, the Team screens & shortlists candidates & sends them for tests
interviews to the company.
Job fairs
From time to time, CMC LTD organizes job fairs to connect companies with students.
Students are interviewed & often get spot offers for jobs with these companies.
Campus placements
Recently, Wipro, HCL, India’s largest third-party offshore Business Process Outsourcing
service provider, conducted campus placements at CMC LTD Computer Education.
Workplace skills
Apart from IT education, CMC LTD also trained students in English language &
communication skills, how to make presentations, how to work in a team, and other
workplace skills

1. METHOD OF DATA COLLECTION

I have chosen the questionnaire methods of data collection due to limited time in hand.
While designing data-collection procedure, adequate safeguards against bias and
unreliability must be ensured. I have examined the collected data for completeness,
comprehensibility, consistently and reliability. I have also gathered secondary data which
have already been collected and analyzed. For the present piece of research the investigator
has used the following methods:

 Observation
 Questionnaire

I have taken 100 as the sample size.

4. ABOUT THE QUESTIONNAIRE

In this method a questionnaire is sent to the HR Manager concerned with a request to check
the questions in the questionnaire. The questionnaire consisted of a number of questions
printed or typed in a definite order. I have chosen this method of data collection due to low
cost incurred, it is free from bias of the interviewer and respondent have adequate time.

WHIRLPOOL
OF INDIA LTD.
Whirlpool entered India in the late 1980s as part of its global expansion
strategy. It forayed into the market under a joint venture with TVS group and
established the first Whirlpool manufacturing facility in Pondicherry for
washing machine category.

In 1995 Whirlpool acquired Kelvinator India Limited and marked an entry into
the refrigerator market as well. The same year the company also saw
acquisition of major shares in TVS joint venture and later in 1996, Kelvinator
and TVS acquisitions were merged to create, Whirlpool of India Limited. This
expanded the company's portfolio in the Indian subcontinent to washing
machines, refrigerator, microwave ovens and air conditioners.

Whirlpool of India Limited headquartered in Gurugram, is now one of the


leading manufacturers and marketers of major home appliances in the country.
The company owns three state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities at Faridabad,
Pondicherry and Pune. Each of the manufacturing set-up features an
infrastructure that is witness of Whirlpool's commitment to providing its

Board of Directors

S Ramadorai, Chairman

In February 2011, S Ramadorai stepped into public service when the Indian Government
appointed him as the Advisor to the Prime Minister in the National Skill Development
Council, in the rank of Cabinet Minister. The Council, which is headed by the Prime
Minister, seeks to develop a strategy for Skill Development at the National level with a
view to address the skill deficit.

Ramadorai continues as the Vice - Chairman of Tata Consultancy Services Ltd, a company
he has been associated with, for the past 39 years. He took over as CEO in 1996 when the
company's revenues were at $ 160 million and has since then led the company through
some of its most exciting phases, including its going public in 2004. In October 2009, he
stepped down as CEO, leaving a $ 6 billion global IT services company to his successor,
while he took over the mantle of Vice Chairmanship of the company.

Ramanathan Ramanan, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer

R. Ramanan is currently the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of CMC
Limited. He was inducted as the Deputy Managing Director and COO of CMC Limited in
16th October 2001 and became the Managing Director and CEO of CMC in 2003.
Ramanan has been associated with TCS and the TATA group since 1981.He is currently
the Chairman of CMC Americas, a wholly owned subsidiary of CMC in USA, and on the
Board of Directors of Tata Business Support Services Limited.

S Mahalingam, Director

Seturaman Mahalingam or “Maha”, as he is better known, started his professional career


with Tata Consultancy Services in 1970. In his 42-year career with TCS, Maha has been
involved in myriad aspects of the Company’s operations and growth, before being
appointed as the Chief Financial Officer of the Company in February 2003 and as
Executive Director in August 2007.

A chartered accountant by qualification, Maha began his career as an IT consultant and


thereafter played a major role in marketing TCS services across the globe, developing
processes and creating large software development centers for the Company.

Kalpana Morparia, Director

Ms. Kalpana Morparia is Chief Executive Officer of J.P. Morgan, India. Kalpana leads
each of the firm's lines of business -Investment Banking, Asset Management, Treasury
Securities & Services and Principal Investment Management. She also has responsibility
for Service Groups operating in India, including Global Research, Finance, Technology
and Operations. Internationally, Kalpana is a member of J.P. Morgan Asia Pacific
Executive Committee.

Sudhakar Rao, Director

Sudhakar Rao, 62, is a retired IAS Officer of 1973 batch. Rao holds a Masters Degree in
Economics from the Delhi School of Economics and a Masters Degree in Public
Administration from the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University. He held
several key positions in the State Government of Karnataka as Chairman & Managing
Director of the Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development and Finance Corporation
(KUIDFC), Principal Secretary- Finance; Principal Secretary- Home; Principal Secretary
to the Chief Minister of Karnataka; Chief Secretary of Karnataka etc. He also served the
Union Government as Director in Prime Minister's Office, Jt. Secretary in the Ministry of
Power; Minister(Economics) in the Embassy of India in Washington etc. He also served as
a Member of the Public Enterprises Selection Board for a year.

M S Ananth, Director

Dr. Ananth with research interests in Molecular Thermodynamics and Mathematical


Modeling is currently a Visiting Professor in the Chemical Engineering department in IISc,
Bangalore. Dr. Ananth graduated from the AC College of Technology with a gold medal
in Chemical Engineering and further obtained his Ph. D degree in Chemical Engineering
in the area of Molecular Thermodynamics from the University of Florida, USA in 1972.

He has held several key positions in academia; he joined IIT Madras as a faculty in the
Department of Chemical Engineering in 1972, served as Dean Academic Courses (1995-
2001), Dean Academic Research (1997-98) and Director from Dec 2001 to July 2011.

Ashok Sinha, Director

Mr. Ashok Sinha has a wealth of experience, competencies and expertise, from his
leadership journey as the Chairman and Managing Director of Bharat Petroleum
Corporation Limited (BPCL), an organization that is listed as a Fortune 500 company. He
spent 33 years in BPCL, where he served on the Board of BPCL for 15 years – first as
Director (Finance) for 10 years from 1995 and then as its Chairman and Managing Director
for 5 years from August 2005.

HISTORY

CMC was incorporated on December 26, 1975, as the 'Computer Maintenance Corporation
Private Limited'. The Government of India held 100 per cent of the equity share capital.
On August 19, 1977, it was converted into a public limited company.

In 1978, when IBM wound up its operations in India, CMC took over the maintenance of
IBM installations at over 800 locations around India and, subsequently, maintenance of
computers supplied by other foreign manufacturers as well. Taking over the activities of
IBM in India, including many of its employees, helped the company to imbibe a service-
oriented culture. This is demonstrated by our long-standing customer associations and our
ability to provide high-quality and reliable service.

In 1980, we perceived the need for total IT system solutions in India, and acquired a
'solutions' orientation. We aligned our focus with the government's thrust on IT
development activities. A significant milestone in our transition from a hardware
maintenance company to a complete end-to-end IT solutions provider was 'Project Interact'
(International Education and Research for Applications of Computer Technology), a UN
project involving design, development and systems-engineering of real-time, computer-
based systems dedicated to applications in the areas of power distribution, railway freight
operations management, and meteorology.

As we evolved along the value chain, CMC forayed into systems integration, interfacing,
installation, commissioning, software development, as well as education and training, on a

national basis. Our R&D facility was set up in 1982, to undertake competency development
in niche areas in the frontiers of technology, to provide us the cutting edge. Today, our
R&D facility is housed in our Hyderabad campus, and develops advanced solutions in areas
such as real-time systems, embedded systems and pervasive computing.

To reflect our diversified business activities, we renamed ourselves 'CMC Limited', and
obtained a fresh certificate of incorporation dated August 27, 1984.

Following a spurt in the global demand for IT services in the early 1990s, particularly in
the United States, we decided to expand our operations and market our product and service
offerings in these markets. Towards this end, in 1991, we acquired Baton Rouge
International Inc, USA (it was subsequently renamed CMC Americas, Inc, in 2003), one
of the first cross-border acquisitions by an Indian IT firm.

In 1992, the Indian government divested 16.69 per cent of CMC's equity to the General
Insurance Corporation of India and its subsidiaries who, in turn, sold part of their stake to
the public in 1996. In 1993, CMC's shares were listed on the Hyderabad Stock Exchange
and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE).

To service and develop our clientele in the UK and Europe, we opened a branch office in
London, in 2000. The next year, the government divested 51 per cent of CMC's equity to
Tata Sons Ltd, through a strategic sale, and CMC became a part of the Tata group.

In line with our strategy of offering our products and services globally, in 2003, we opened
a branch office in Dubai to tap the hitherto unexplored markets of West Asia and Africa.

In 2004, the government divested its remaining 26.5 per cent stake in CMC to the public.

INFRASTRUCTURE

CMC EDUCATION AND TRAINING DEVISION

Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) were launched by a decision of the
Indian Cabinet on September 15, 1964. This is a bilateral programme of assistance, and
along with its corollary programme SCAAP, covers 156 countries in Asia, Africa, East
Europe, Central & Latin America, Pacific and Small Island, which are invited to share in
the Indian Development experience acquired over six decades post independence.

CMC's Association with ITEC/SCAAP

CMC's association with the ITEC/SCAAP Plans of the Ministry of External Affairs,
Government of India dates back to 1989, when CMC was the first company to provide
training in IT to foreign participants under these plans. Since then, CMC has trained more
than 4500 people from over participating 100 countries.

CMC is a Tata Enterprise and a subsidiary of TCS (Tata Consultancy Services) has been

1) For generating good quality of students proper entrance test should be conducted.

2.) Students who secure good marks should be given scholarship.

3.) 45% of the students came to know about CMC from net so; the promotion must be
mainly focused on internet.

4.) Students rating on an average were 3.91 which mean there is a further scope of
improvement.

5) Placement cell should often conduct mock test and interviews for the practice of the
students.

6) 44% of student’s problems are not attended so, there should be improvement inb the
staffs and faculty.

7.) Students reference is one of the major source for getting more. There should be few
techniques used while counseling to take out reference from the students.

8.) Library and canteen facilities should be improved.

9) Out of all the courses PHP, MySQL and advance JAVA have high scope in the
corporates so company should mainly focus on these two courses.

CONCLUSION At this moment, I have reached the end of this research on placement
and policies in CMC Ltd. Now I have an idea of how placement department in HR works.
And how candidates are placed. I have also learned the methodology by which client
companies are contacted for placing the students. By research I also came to know that the
IT courses in CMC have high market demand in Corporates. Students are placed on daily
basis. Now I am having a clear ideology of approaching different companies for placement
and the entire procedure of the placement departments. I have a deeper understanding of
its logical design.

As a whole, it’s hoped that this paper work has introduced benefits in the placement
procedure. May this research helps in understanding students mind set in further
development in the promotion and advertising of the company.
