Guidelines for use of this workbook
The Gurus of Datta and lessons learned have been taken from Sri
Datta Darshanam (Vision of Datta) by Parama Pujya Sri Ganapathy
Sachchidanada Swamiji.
The stories of Swamiji have been taken from the biography “Sri
Ganapati Sachchidananda”.
Note: Each lesson can be taught over the course of one week. If there
are two stories relating to different lessons of the same Guru the
lesson can be taught over two days.
Every day discussions can be done with the class about the Guru
(teacher) of Datta and how it relates to everyday life.
The Gurus can also be incorporated into science lessons. For example
the lesson on the sun can be discussed and in addition, it can be used
to help teach about the solar system and use of solar energy. Then the
story can be told to reinforce the lesson about obtaining things and
giving back to the world (community etc.) which Datta learnt from the
sun.
The yoga exercises are to help strengthen the body of the students
and bring balance and flexibility. They can be used to help improve the
concentration of the student by gradually allowing them to hold the
postures for longer periods of time. Student enjoy the yoga exercises
as they are a lot of fun
Many of the activities in this book are found on various websites which
promote crafts and activities for children. The web links to these and
other sites are included in the reference of this book. Teachers will find
a lot more useful information and activities by following the links.
I would like to thank my friends and family for help with the yoga
activities, proof reading and suggestions in compiling this book.
With the Grace of Sadguru all things are possible. I would like to
express my sincere thanks to Appaji for his unlimited love, protection
and blessings. This book is a small offering at his lotus feet.

OM DRAM DATTAYA NAMAHA
Dram is the seed sound (mantra) for Lord Datta. Just as the seed has the power to become
a huge forest, similarly the seed mantra will fill you with huge energy when chanted with
love and devotion.
Chant the mantra Om Dram Dattaya Namaha everyday for the blessings of Lord Datta,
I bow to those sacred Sadguru padukas (feet of the Guru) on which are seen the lines
symbolizing :
Hari the one who sustains the world,
Shree Devi, the one who bestows prosperity in the form of wealth and knowledge
Goddess of the Earth (Bhoo Devi) who is the support of living beings
Agastya (expert in medicinal herbs) and several other sacred and secret lines.

BIRTH OF LORD DATTATREYA
SATYAM / SWAMIJI
9
THE BIRTH OF LORD DATTATREYA
Just as you can think of a kite and make it, Brahma thought
of creating the world. The world then took shape from his
thoughts.
The people had a lot of bad habits and this made Lord Brahma very sad and
distressed.
Lord Brahma thought “The people of this world need a spiritual prince or guide
with excellent noble and good qualities to save them!”
There was a sage called Atri who was very noble and did a lot of penance. He
married sage Atri to Anasuya who was the most virtuous woman.
Together sage Atri and Anasuya Mata did a lot of tapas or penance for the welfare
of the world (chanting of mantras, performing poojas daily, teaching of holy stories
and good values to people, giving food as charity, obtaining knowledge of
medicinal herbs and helping people, writing scriptures so people could easily
understand, etc.).
In order to help Lord Brahma fulfill his wish to save the world
and bring the people back to the noble path of life, sage Atri
and Anasuya Mata went to Nirvindya River and began intense
penance.
Lord Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva were pleased with the penance
of this noble couple and appeared before them. They asked
sage Atri to ask for any wish and they would grant it.
10
Sage Atri bowed before them with tears of joy and answered, “O Lord, I have the
blessing of the vision of God so I do not wish for anything more.” However, the
trio insisted he ask for something. Thinking of the welfare of the world, he thought
if the Gods are born on the earth, the people of the earth will benefit. He requested
that the three Gods be born to them as their sons.
The trio replied, “O Munindra, with intense devotion you have surrendered
yourself to us. You are a noble soul and your desire is also noble. Out of our love
for you and in appreciation of your tapas we are giving ourselves. Your desire will
be fulfilled by the child who will be born to you.”
Lord Brahma was born as Chandra, Lord Vishnu was born as Datta and Lord Shiva
was born as Durvaasa. After some time Lord Brahma and Lord Shiva returned to
their worlds. Before leaving the earth Datta combined the aspects for both Brahma
and Shiva and remained on earth. Datta became known as Dattatreya. Datta also
means ‘gift given’.
Lord Vishnu gifted himself as Datta to sage Atri, Anasuya Mata and the world.
11
THE BIRTH OF HIS HOLINESS SRI GANAPATHY
SACHCHIDANANDA SWAMIJI
Swamiji’s mother Jayalakshmi lived in Mekedatu with her parents. As a young girl
Jayalakshmi would freely roam the forests and serve the saints and sages that
frequented the holy mountain range. The sages would teach her the science of yoga
and worship of the Mother Goddess.
12
13
Lord Dattatreya was born to Jayalakshmi
l Mata as a baby. His father named him
Satyanarayana.
Jayalakshmi served the sages in Mekedatu. She also saved the villagers from
being harmed by animals (elephants and tigers) by doing special prayers.
Datta was pleased with Jayalakshmi’s penance and good deeds. He told her he
would be born as her son. Jayalakshmi later married Narsimha Sastri.
Satyam was born as Jayalakshmi’s son. He had special holy malas around his
neck and was covered with holy ashes or vibhuti. Satyam was later known as
Swamiji.
Swamiji built Datta temples and centers throughout India and the western
countries.
He is the same as Datta and wants everyone to get their wishes fulfilled through
love and devotion to Datta. He wants us to leave our bad habits, serve God,
and feel the bliss of God.
OM DRAM DATTAYA
14 NAMAHA
START EACH YOGA SESSION BY CHANTING THE GURU PADUKA SHLOKAM
Once the Guru Paduka Shlokam is chanted the Guru is present in a subtle form to guide
and control the energy of the students during the yoga practice.
ii. Inhale and raise your hands in front of you with palms facing down.
iii. Inhale again this time open your arms out to the side as if you are going to get a big
hug
iv. Inhale a third time lifting arms right up (palms facing each other)
15
2. SAHAJA KRIYA
Sit with back, neck and head straight.
Place hands in a fist (place the thumb at the base of the little finger and curl the
other fingers over the thumb), bring the knuckles of both hands together palm side
facing upward. Place hands at the navel.
Inhale (breathe in) letting the tummy become like a balloon, fill the lungs with air,
right from the tummy up to the neck.
Exhale, breathe out by dropping the chest and pull in the tummy muscles so all the
air goes out of the lungs.
Take nice slow deep breaths in and nice slow deep breaths out.
Yoga Exercise :
Pretend you are a little seed in the earth. Stoop down hugging your legs.
Then imagine the sun shines and it rains and the seed begins to grow.
Stand up slowly lifting your hands (branches up to the sky) as you stand.
Grow until the tree is on tip toes.
There are animals making their homes in your tree. What kind of animals are on
your tree?
It is cold and windy but the tree stands tall, its branches blowing and swaying in
the wind. The leaves rustle in the wind and the fruits fall from the tree. The fruit
goes to the earth and you become a seed once more in the earth.
16
Do this exercise two or three times. Kids really love it.
LEG STRENGTHENING EXERCISES
Repeat raising your right hand and holding the ankle of left
leg with the left hand.
Take a wide step forward with your right foot, bring your left leg just behind right foot
with toes pointing down.
Raise both arms up and out to the front with palms facing each other.
Repeat lifting right leg and balancing on your left foot. Arms stretched out to the front
palms facing each other.
17
5. THE EAGLE POSE – GARUDA ASANA
i. Stand with the feet together and the arms by your sides
(tad-aa-sa-na or mountain pose).
The left foot can rest on the floor if you cannot wrap it all the
way around.
iii. Extend arms out to the front palm facing upward. Bend hands at the elbow.
Cross your arms at the elbows, left over right.
iv. Join the palms of your hands together keeping the fingers pointed upward.
vi. You can unwrap your arms and spread them like eagle wings and flap your
wings and squak like an eagle!
vii. Then wrap one hand around the other. Bend at the knee a little so your eagle
can rest on the branch.
Repeat wrapping the right leg over the left and the right arm over left.
18
The Garuda aa-sana or posture was practiced by Sage Atri. He would chant mantras
standing like this for many years.
Datta was the first teacher of the science of breath or kriya yoga which you just
finished practicing.
Draam is the seed sound (beejakshara) for Datta. From a seed a tree grows and
many seeds are produced from the tree. You can get an entire forest from one seed.
A seed mantra has a lot of power to help improve your life. Therefore chanting OM
DRAAM DATTAYA NAMAHA is very beneficial for you.
19
What is your Eagle like? Complete the sentences to describe your Eagle.
You can use the words in the box to help complete the sentences.

LESSON #13
23
OM DRAM DATTAYA NAMAHA
24
Once Lord Datta was sitting in meditation when King Yadu passed by and saw this
young person sitting unaffected, happy and calm.
King Yadu approached Lord Datta and humbly asked, “ How do you remain unaffected
by troubles, happy and calm? Why do you always seem to be floating in bliss
(happiness)? What has made this possible?”
Lord Datta replied, “O King Yadu I have observed the world closely and obtained a little
knowledge from a number of gurus (teachers). Listen carefully! I will tell you what I
have learnt.”
25
LESSONS DATTA LEARNED FROM FIRE
How does fire look to you? Fire has a great luster or brilliance and radiance.
Can you touch fire or keep your hand close to it for long?
What happens when you put any object in fire?
The fire consumes or burns all things at once when placed in the fire.
Does the fire become impure or dirty because all sorts of objects are placed in it?
No, the fire remains always holy, pure and brilliant.
Lord Datta learnt that a person should be brilliant with knowledge like the radiance of
Fire.
Lord Datta learnt that even though Fire consumes all things indiscriminately it does not
become unholy. In the same way a person should be free from others and remain
unaffected by what others give him. When he is free from others and unaffected then no
matter what he does, he will not commit any sin.
When you go to your place of worship (temple, church etc) have you seen any form of
fire worship?
During prayers Fire is worshipped in a gross form that we can see as the deya, candle or
homa.
26
STORY OF GANAPATI SWAMIJI
Gundlupeta is a small town in India, there lived a government revenue officer named
Rangayya. Rangayya was always concerned about serving the public and because there
were no rains in the region he was arranging for famine relief of the place.
Rangayya thought, “How little is the government relief fund that has come. These funds
will not be able to help all the people who are suffering. The famine relief is not useful it
will not work. God has to be kind and send rains, then the people will plant crops and
everyone will have food. How is it going to be, O God?”
Then Rangayya recalled about Ganapati Swami. “He is capable of making the impossible
possible. If he comes and performs some religious rituals then rains are sure to come.” He
told a few elderly people in the village. Some applauded him thinking it was a good idea,
others were annoyed and said, “Where did he get such a foolish idea?” One of the elders,
Ramanna suggested the Swami be invited to conduct the religious rituals on the Parvati
Mountain. It was the holy abode of the Mother Goddess.
However, Ramanna was skeptical about the Ganapati Swami but did not have too much
time to think about it as his son-in-law was sick and needed to be admitted to hospital.
Ramanna took him to Mysore hospital. While he was in Mysore he remembered that this
Ganapati Swami had his ashram in Kesare. Ramanna thought to himself, “I shall go and
see for myself what this Ganapati Swami is about, what his way is and what his power
and all that” and he set out for Kesare.
Ramanna arrived at Kesare, sat at the doorstep and observed everything. He came at two
o’clock everyday, stayed till nightfall observing everything and then he left. He observed
the Swamy elaborately performing many different types of fire worship (Ganapati Homa,
Gayatri Homa etc). On full moon days the Swami would perform archana (chanting of
God’s name) and hundreds of couples would come to offer holy water on these days.
Daily three or four sick persons were coming crying and leaving laughing. One day he
observed a man coming to the Swami, “Master the medicine you gave did not help.”
Swami said “Let it go. Take these instead and gave dry sandal paste from his mouth. The
following day the man returned and told the Swami that the illness had abated.
Little by little there arose in Ramanna’s mind a mixture of emotions of respect, affection
and devotion to Ganapati Swami. On the fifth day Swami sent word requesting Ramanna
to come.
Swami then gave Ramanna initiation and accepted him as his disciple.
Later Ramanna returned to Kesare with Rangayya and other elders from Gundlupeta and
requested Swami, “Our region is in dire distress without rains. You must come and bring
rains by doing some “yagyam” fire worship.
“Let us do Gayatri Yagyam (fire worship to Gayatri)” said the Swami.
They suggested Parvati Hills to perform the yagyam and indicated they would arrange
food for one or two thousand persons.
Elaborate preparations were made for the yagyam on Parvati Hills. Swami and his group
arrived and the rituals began. People from all the distant fields were coming, everyone
said, “He is Ganapati Swami, he is Satyananda Swami.” They were joyful for no reason
and wished to meet him.
Preparations had been made for one or two thousand people but the organizers estimated
about ten to twelve thousand persons had come out to meet the Swami. They were all
farmers and would not go away quietly if they were told there were no food
arrangements.
After half an hour of performing the fire rituals,
clouds enveloped the sky, lightning flashed and
the rains burst forth on the Parvati Hills.
28
The organizers mustered courage and went to Swamy, “Swamy we have made
preparations for one or two thousand people but over ten thousand people are here.”
The Swami went to the place of cooking and said, “Okay carry on.” Feeding started and
went on into the late hours of the night. With Swami’s blessings, the food for two
thousand people fed over ten thousand people that day.
Swami returned to Mysore. Four days after returning the region of Gundlupeta got heavy
down pours of rain and the farmers were able to cultivate their crops and feed themselves.
Swamiji offered the mantras and holy offering into the fire thus the environment was
charged with good vibrations. Blessings in the form of rain came to the people of
Gunlupeta through the kindness of Swamiji.

body.
Therefore chanting
OM DRAAM DATTAYA NAMAHA is very beneficial for you.

ACTIVITY
Paper is one thing that can be used for a variety of purposes - crafts, packaging,
storage, stationery...the uses are countless. Here is one of the things that you can
make.
Step 1: Take the bristal board and cut it into a rectangular piece (12 inches x 6
inches).
Step 3: With the help of a scissor make slits all along the length from the folded
side.
Step 4: Cut a strip (1 inch x 8 inch) from the remaining bristal board. Stick the two
ends of the strip to the cylindrical lamp to make the handle. Colour or decorate it
the way you like.

38
LESSONS DATTA LEARNED FROM THE SEA
What happens if you throw any object in the sea, like the sea ball or
a leaf?
Even though the sea is large it does not allow even a small leaf to
remain on its surface. It drives it away to the shore. If it did not do
this it would have dried up by now.
Therefore I learnt from the Sea even the least disturbance should not be allowed a
foothold.
How deep is the sea? Near to shore the sea is shallow and you can safely bathe.
As you go further out to sea it can be thousands of meters deep.
The Sea is very deep even though it does not appear so.
In the same way, a person should not show off his powers or express his feelings.
He should not be overjoyed when his desires are fulfilled or depressed when he does not
get what he wants.
I learnt from the Sea to practice equanimity and be steadfast in my devotion to the Self.
39
STORY OF THE GREATNESS OF A SADGURU (SPIRITUAL MASTER)
One year during Navaratri festival (worship of God in the form of the Divine Mother)
Swamiji entered into the fire and came out unscathed (he was not burnt). While he was
giving teertham or holy water an elderly devotee, Narayana Rao came there with
assistance from his son.
He told Swamiji, “I am not fortunate, I could not see Swamiji’s Poornahuti (final
offerings into the fire). I am becoming very old and so I do not know whether I will be
alive next year or not! I wanted to see the final offering into the fire at least this year, but
alas! I could not.” He was full of agony for missing the occasion.
Narayana Rao was an old man who had spared no effort to serve the Ashram of Swamiji.
Swamiji was moved by his sorrow and grabbed the jasmine garland he had brought for
Swamiji. The fire was still blazing and Swamiji threw that garland in the fire. The fire
blazed up even more. Meanwhile Swamiji jumped into the fire like a lightning and came
out like a lightning. He brought Narayana Rao’s flower garland that had been thrown
into the fire. The jasmine garland was fresh and radiant it too had not been burnt by the
flames of the fire. Swamiji gave the garland to Narayana Rao and told him it was a
blessing from the Fire God, Agni.
Earlier people were saying Swamiji was using medicinal herbs and could go into the fire
and not be burnt. Now they were confused, even the jasmine garland brought by Mr Rao
when thrown into the fire by Swamiji was not burnt.
Once Swamiji met a master magician, Vajhakunnam on his tours in India. He invited
Vajhakunna to perform magic tricks during the Shiva Ratri festivals in Mysore.
Vajhakunnan had special powers such as creating some objects, seeing the deeds done by
persons known to him even if they were far away.
Vajhakunnan’s granddaughter was expecting a baby and her condition was very critical.
She was admitted to the hospital. Everyone had lost hope. Vajhakunnan cancelled his trip
to Mysore. Unable to do anything he started praying to Swamiji. He observed what
Swamiji was doing in Mysore and could feel his vibrations. He saw Swamiji had gone
into the meditation and was helping his granddaughter through His powers. In the
morning the doctors said they were thoroughly surprised that Vajhakunnan’s
granddaughter had easy delivery of the baby and both mother and baby were resting well.
Vajhakunnan immediately left for Mysore. When he saw Swamiji he created vibhooti
(holy ashes) and covered Swamiji’s feet and bowed down to those holy feet in gratitude.
He created sweets and distributed to all the children in the ashram. Vajhakunnan gave a
brilliant magic performance that day.
40
Rajaram one of Swamiji’s devotees came and asked, “What specialty did you notice in
Swamiji? What is the difference between you a magician and Swamiji?”
Vajhakunnan looked at him and replied, “I have the art of conjuring (doing some magic
tricks) as well as some ascetic (spiritual) powers. I usually mix them in my performance.
Creating vibhooti and sweets from the air is ascetic powers. It is not conjuring. I will
show you another ascetic power.”
He took a pack of cards and spread them on the table. “This table is from the ashram
only. You think of any card from this pack of cards.”
Rajaram thought of a card. Vajhakunna began looking at the cards seriously. After one or
two minutes a card started moving. It moved in the direction of the movement of
Vajhakunnan’s eyes. Finally it fell to the ground. It was the same card that Rajaram had
thought of.
“You see this is ascetic accomplishment. I have developed that power in my eyes. I can
also see what is in the mind of a person far away. I have examined what Swamiji was
doing, what his essence is and what is his basic principle. After observing I am his
dedicated devotee. You will have to guess what I have seen.”
Rajaram spoke to the people gathered there, “You have witnessed the art of conjuring. It
has no other value than entertainment. All miracles are like this only, whoever may do
them. There is no value in them. Devotion, wisdom, and detachment only take human
beings to the knowledge and experience of God.”
41
START EACH YOGA SESSION BY CHANTING THE GURU PADUKA SHLOKAM
Once the Guru Paduka Shlokam is chanted the Guru is present in a subtle form to guide
and control the energy of the students during the yoga practice.
ii. Inhale again this time open your arms out to the side as if you are going to get a big
hug
iii. Inhale a third time lifting arms right up (palms facing each other)
iv. While exhaling lower arms down to your side and stand in a mountain
42
You can practice this exercise while sitting or standing.
ii. Tuck the left hand under the elbow of the right
hand
Now repeat the above steps 5 times with the left hand on the top of the right elbow joint
and the right arm tucked under the left hand.
43
5. DOLPHIN POSE
ii. Bring the ears between and in line with the upper arms. While inhaling, curl the
toes, and lift the knees away from the ground. Lift the heels slightly off the floor
gently so that you are balancing the lower body on the toes.
v. Hold this posture for a few seconds and then gently bend the knees to release them,
while exhaling normally.
You can try dolphin push-up. While in the inverted V position lower the body bringing
the face over the hand into a plank position. Then push up again into an inverted V.
44
6. SURFER POSE
i. Start with your belly on your yoga-surfboard mat and begin to paddle out into the
ocean.
ii. When you see a wave, jump up into Warrior 2 (with arms out to a "t").
vi. Fold forward and look underneath your surfer legs. Woo-hoo!
Bring your arms back down to your surfboard and bring your belly back down so you can
paddle out and catch another wave.
45
Hand Gesture with 3 Part Yogic Breath for balancing the
WATER element in the body
ii. Touch the tips of the thumb and little finger of both hands.
Do not apply any pressure with the thumb on the little
finger. Keep all other fingers extended (index, middle and
ring fingers).
iii. Hold this mudra (hand gesture) at the heart level and a few inches in front of
the body.
iv. Close your eyes and inhale and exhale listening to the sound of the breath.
Take nice slow deep breaths (3 part yogic breath). You can practice this for
one or two minutes.
This mudra (hand posture) with the breathing exercise helps to enhance lower urinary
functions, excretory functions and reproductive functions in the body.

LESSONS DATTA LEARNED FROM THE SUN
Once Lord Datta was sitting in meditation when King Yadu passed by and saw this
young person sitting unaffected, happy and calm.
King Yadu asked Lord Datta, “ How do you remain unaffected, happy and calm?
Why do you always seem to be floating in bliss (happiness)? What has made this
possible?”
Lord Datta replied, “O King Yadu I have observed the world closely and obtained a little
knowledge from a number of gurus (teachers). Listen carefully! I will tell you what I
have learnt.”
Lord Datta said, “O King Yadu, listen carefully to what I learnt from the Sun.”
=
The Sun :
What happens when the sun shines on the waters in the sea? The water becomes water
vapour or like steam. At the appropriate time it returns the water to the earth again in the
form of rain.
Just as the sun sucks up water and gives it back, so too you should accept the objects of
the senses without any zeal or greed of getting and keeping or possessing the objects.
If you see the sun in a pool of water or mirror, how many suns
will you think there are?
When some people see the sun reflected in water or mirrors they
think that there are many suns.
From this I learnt that the same Light that shows me this world, that same Light is
showing the world to my friend and everyone. That One Light is called the Atman or the
Soul and though it appears as many different persons the Soul is One only.
The soul is thought of as many by people because of the wrong understanding of the
mind.
53
GIVING WHAT IS RECEIVED
Satyanarayana, having returned home went straight to the well and began bailing out
water from the well and pouring it over his head. He was drawing out water again and
again and was pouring it over his head. While he was bathing, he went on muttering some
mantras (prayers) within himself. He had not noticed his grandfather Linganna, coming
out of the house and observing him from a distance.
“What is this crow’s bath? How long will you bathe after the dark has set in?” said
Linganna.
“Oh it means you have gone to the holy Kasi and have now just returned! If not, where
can you be roaming till now in this town?”
While the young man Satyam was about to give a reply someone came asking loudly at
the outer entrance of the house. “Sir, is Satyanaranaji here?”
“Father it appears to be our Satyam.” Came the voice of a woman from inside the house.
“But these people are asking for a regular worshipper of God (Ganapati upasaka). What
is this?” Linganna was thinking out loudly.
“Is it you? Welcome, welcome. I am taking my bath. There is hardly any place in my
house to sit. I am sorry you are standing. But how is the baby now? How is the calf?”
said Satyanarayana coming there.
Wiping himself off, he turned and went to the back of the house. Seeing his sister,
Satyam told her, “Look here Sarasu, go out quickly and get some ash from the grate and
put it in a packet and bring it to me.”
Reluctantly she went in and packed the ashes not paying attention at the hot touch of
something although the ashes had been thoroughly cooled down. She brought the packets
and gave them to Satyam.
54
On seeing Satyanarayana, the visitors said, “Sir, the illness has abated and the calf is
doing better. Yours is an ambrosial hand. Can anything go against the hand of Ganapati
(remover of obstacles)?”
Satyanarayana said to them, “With this, it will go away completely. Have no fear. I am
here.” He then turned to Saraswati and said, “Sister, give them the packets.” He told the
visitors, “Please use it as you previously did.”
Receiving the packets and pressing them to their own eyes they took out a five dollar
note, placed it on the floor and moved to a distance.
“Look here Sir! You are a green boy (young boy). One should not refuse and kick out the
Goddess of wealth, who has come to your door, that too, at the twilight period
(auspicious period at dusk). I am an old man. Listen to me. Do not ask from those who
will not give. Accept from those who give freely. Do not deny me. Use it for some good
purpose. Allah will be pleased.” An old Muslim spoke partly in his language.
Satyanarayana remained silent and those people saluted him and departed.
Meanwhile, as a bolt from the blue, there came in their view a mother with her recently
delivered baby in a dust pan. She was moving about crying out loudly, “Fathers, mothers
who have children please save my baby!”
Linganna heard that painful cry and was shaken from head to foot. With brimful eyes he
asked, “Lady, what has happened?”
“This two month old infant is my baby sir. It has some disease and I went to the hospital
where they informed me that they would give medicine. However they say there is no
more medicine in the hospital. They have asked me to buy and bring the medicine for
injection. They have written a slip and given it to me.”
“What is there to say sir, for a beggar woman’s child, what medicine will be available?”
55
“I have found it out sir. It will cost five dollars. Whatever hard work I do I can never see
so much money with my eyes.”
“Look here!” Satyanarayana’s word was serious. He pointed out with his finger to the
five dollar note on the ground. The beggar woman saw it and got a glimpse of hope.
“Take it,” Satyanarayana said in a grave tone. The beggar woman trembled with fear.
“Sir, I do not have change.” She said with fear and shyness.
It is no wonder that the beggar woman’s face lit up. Linganna did not know in how many
ways she showered her blessings to Satyanarayana and went away.

START EACH YOGA SESSION BY CHANTING THE GURU PADUKA SHLOKAM
Once the Guru Paduka Shlokam is chanted the Guru is present in a subtle form to guide
and control the energy of the students during the yoga practice.
Stand up and raise your hand up and imagine you are expanding until you become the
universe.
The sun, moon and stars are shining in you. You are a brilliant light.
Then bend forward imagine you are emptying yourself. All your bad habits are falling
away.
What are you getting rid of? Then you are completely hanging down loosely like a rag
doll.
57
Surya Namaskaar – Sun Salutation
Note: When steps 3 and 9 are done, bring the knee in line with the ankle. Do NOT
overextend the knee so that it passes the ankle.
The sun gives good energy during the early morning hours (6am – 8am) and afternoon
(4pm – 6pm).
Practice Surya Namaskar or sun salutation facing the sun during these hours to energize
your body.
Inhale and lift your clasped hands over the top of your
head. Inhale and exhale.
2. Forward Bend Pose. While exhaling slowly bend forward and place
both hands by the side of the feet, head touching or as close to knees as
possible. (knees can be bent slightly). Extend up through the tailbone and
down through the hands. Can you feel the muscles stretching in your
thighs?
58
3. Chant – OM Suryaya Namah (Greetings to the guide of all)
59
Chant Om Hiranyagarbhaya Namah (Greetings to the
creator)
10. Return to the Runner’s pose. Inhale and move the left leg
forward, bending at the knee and placing the left foot between
the palms of both hands. The right leg is stretched back and
resting on the toes. Chest close to thighs and head looking
straight ahead.
60
Chant Om Arkaya Namah (Greetings to the radiant One)
12. While inhaling, raise your body to an upright position. Lift the
hand over the head, palms together (in prayer position). Slowly
bend the body back slightly. Straighten the body and return to the
mountain (arms to the side).
Surya is the sun and fiery energy in the body. It helps us to reason and use logic for
solving problems. Chandra is the moon or cooling energy in the body. It helps us to
improve our artistic and musical abilities, imagination and will power.
In order to balance the Sun and Moon energies in your body you do alternate nostril
breathing.
i. Sit with legs folded in a lotus position.
ii. Close the right nostril with the thumb and inhale through the left nostril.
iii. Close the left nostril with the ring finger and exhale through the right nostril.
iv. Then inhale through the right and out through the left.
v. This is one round of the breathing exercise.
Stand up and raise your hand up and imagine you are expanding until you become the
universe. The sun, moon and stars are shining in you. You are a brilliant light.
Then bend forward imagine you are emptying yourself.
All your bad habits are falling away. What are you getting rid of?
Then you are completely hanging down loosely like a rag doll.
You are completely empty and relaxed.
Repeat this exercise five times
61
Hand Gesture with 3 Part Yogic Breath for balancing the
SPACE element in the body
i. Sit comfortably with legs folded or feet flat on the ground. Keep the back, neck
and head straight.
ii. Touch the tips of the thumb and the middle finger. Do not
apply any pressure with the thumb on the middle finger. Keep
the other fingers extended (index, ring and little fingers).
iii. Hold this mudra (hand gesture) at the heart level and a few
inches in front of the body.
Keep me healthy,
Keep me smart,
Keep me happy
Till the next day starts!
62
ACTIVITY
This is one of the simplest and best water science experiments, and it also demonstrates
the power of the sun and how it can be harvested in everyday life.
Materials Required:
* large clear bowl from the kitchen.
* cling wrap or any clear plastic food covering
* a clean drinking glass
* salt
* food dye
* ordinary drinking water
* a pebble.
Procedure:
Mix water in the bowl with the salt and the food dye until you have an unpleasant looking
and tasting solution.
Extra ingredients can be added to the bowl to increase the unpleasant taste of the mixture.
These can be any household food items such as garlic, sugar, cinnamon, tumeric, curry
powder and so on.
Cover the bowl with the plastic food covering. It needs to be a little bit loose.
Place the pebble on top of the food covering in the centre of the bowl so that it makes a
dip in the plastic sheet, which must be EXACTLY above the top of the drinking glass.
63
Then place the whole setup in the sunshine.
The heat from the sun is trapped by the plastic sheet. This makes the temperature in the
bowl increase.
This in turn evaporates the water in the polluted solution of water and food additives.
The water vapour then reaches the plastic sheet (since hot air rises) where it condenses to
form water.
It condenses since the temperature inside the plastic covered bowl is greater than that
outside the bowl.
This runs down the underside of the food covering to the point where the pebble is
sitting, and then drips into the cup.
64
Supplies you will need:
Pizza box
Tape and scissors
Aluminum foil
Black construction paper
Clear plastic wrap
Newspaper, pen, notebook paper and ruler
3. Cut out three sides of the rectangle you drew on the pizza
box.
You now have a flap on the lid of the box.
Fold the flap back in the direction of the side you did not cut.
4. Put the aluminum foil on the inside of the flap and secure it with
tape.

LESSON #16
66
Swamiji,
Your beard is
So long and white,
You love us day and night!
67
Lord Datta said,
“O King Yadu, listen carefully to what I learnt from the Pigeon.”
Once there was a handsome and strong pigeon living in a forest. This pigeon made
friends with a well suited female pigeon. Their love for each other was incomparable.
They were like two bodies with a single soul. In the course of time the female pigeon
became pregnant and laid eggs for the first time. The male and female pigeons grew even
closer tending after the eggs.
In time young birds came out of the eggs. The pigeon couple was completely devoted to
the young ones. Whenever they beheld their pranks and sweet talk they felt very proud
and happy. The young ones were the world to the pigeon couple.
One day both parents went to the forest to bring food for their young ones. A hunter came
and spread his net and many birds fell into it. The poor little innocent birds caught in the
net cried helplessly.
When the parent birds returned and saw the empty nests, they fainted. They soon
recovered and each went in a different direction in search of the young ones.
The mother pigeon saw the young ones caught in the net and overcome with pity and love
for her children, without thinking of the results, she rushed into the net to save them. She
68
too got caught in the net and began to wail. Such is the result of too much attachment and
not thinking through a situation.
A little later the father pigeon arrived and saw the situation. Though he did not rush
forward like the mother, he was overcome with grief at the sight of his own wife and
children dying before his very eyes. He could not control his weeping and began to
lament loudly.
“Where is happiness for me after losing my wife and children? For whose sake should I
live? Oh, if only wife or even one child had survived! What is the use of living?” he
cried. The father pigeon felt too much grief, the grief made his mind unreasonable and
confused. Consequently he decided that it was better to die. He flew into the net and met
his death at the hands of the hunter.
When a person’s only aim in life is to maintain the family, he will one day perish with his
kith and kin.
O King! This world is an open door to divine happiness and liberation. There is no doubt
about it. We must not waste this life by binding attachments.”
69
START EACH YOGA SESSION BY CHANTING THE GURU PADUKA SHLOKAM
Once the Guru Paduka Shlokam is chanted the Guru is present in a subtle form to guide
and control the energy of the students during the yoga practice.
ii. Inhale again this time open your arms out to the side as if you are going to get a big
hug
iii. Inhale a third time lifting arms right up (palms facing each other)
iv. While exhaling lower arms down to your side and stand in a mountain
Stand up and raise your hand up and imagine you are expanding until you become the
universe.
The sun, moon and stars are shining in you. You are a brilliant light.

Now inhale and extend your body upwards so you have a nice tall straight back, neck and
head. Exhale and lower your upper body over your “butterfly wings”.
Inhale up then exhale down, try to touch your forehead as close to the ground as possible.
73
Hand Gesture with 3 Part Yogic Breath for balancing the AIR element in the body
ii. Bend the index finger of both hands. Place the thumb lightly
on the bent index finger. Do not apply any pressure with the
thumb on the index finger. Keep the other fingers extended
(middle, ring and little fingers).
iii. Hold this mudra (hand gesture) at the heart level and a few inches in front of
the body.
iv. Close your eyes and inhale and exhale listening to the sound of the breath.
Take nice slow deep breaths (3 part yogic breath). You can practice this for

VAAG-DEV-YAI
SA-RA-SWAT-YAI NAMAHA
77
LESSONS DATTA LEARNED FROM THE ARROW-MAKER
While making arrows even if a procession of the King accompanied by musicians and
dancers were to pass near him he would not be aware of it.
If such a stilled mind is directed towards God, habits generated by actions will be burnt to
ashes.
Good qualities will arise and subdue desire and ignorance. This will lead to the
destruction of agitation and laziness.
When this happens he will have the bliss of knowledge (samadhi). He will be
unaware of the inner or outer world.
78
GIVING OF ALMS
During his younger days Swamiji, known as Satyanarayana or Satyam worked at the post
office. It was payday and Satyam was going home to the house of his aunt Parvatamma.
On the way home at a particular place Satyam heard the loud cries of two persons. “Babu,
please save us.” They were a beggar couple man and wife whom he often saw on the
way. It was not new that they were begging but their crying and their begging together
was new.
“We admitted our child in the general hospital. They said there was no medicine
available there. It has been four days since we ate any food. There is no milk for the
child. We can’t afford to buy milk and food for the child. Our child is dying. If he dies
we too will die. Father! You must save us, you have to save us!”
They were beggarly faces. They had no sense of shame or honour or dignity or self-
esteem. However, they had hearts of loving care for the children born to them. But who
will care for their hungry stomachs or grieving hearts.
They might utter lies to any other but not to Satyam. Satyam’s heart melted. He took the
pay he had received that day and gave it to the couple.
Satyam speed home on his bicycle. His thoughts whirling away like the wheels of the
bicycle. He had given a gift but that would not solve the problem of the many beggars in
the world.
In the world there are beggars on the street, those that sing and do acts of jugglery for a
few pennies. They are considered mean and base. However if the same persons were to
beg for votes or sing on a stage they are considered as dignified. The dignified beggars
are selfish and the source of this selfishness has created an army of poverty. Satyam’s
thoughts were like this and turning as quickly as the wheels of bike.
“What is causing this selfishness? How to root it out? The root cause is the loss of the
inner vision of men (of their true divine nature). The result is inner selfishness which
shows as outer selfishness. This is the linkage.”
“Setting an example of leading a selfless life (dedicated to the service of others) on the
one hand and causing an inner vision to this society is the only remedy to the problem.”
79
With these thoughts Satyam took a vow, which was the command of His Mother and
Guru, to work tirelessly for the welfare of the world by Himself setting an example of
selfless service.
Satyam with one pointed concentration and determination began the mission of
providing hospitals, feeding programs, schools and other services for the welfare of the
society.
From childhood and throughout His life, He is working selflessly for society and the
world at large. His meals are sparse and his sleep even less as thousands of persons visit
and request assistance on a daily basis.
He undertakes world tours to reach the devotees and spread His message. In addition, for
the benefit of the world he uses the internet (facebook, utube, vimeo) to provide noble
and virtuous lessons for persons, to encourage everyone to chant the holy names and raise
the consciousness of the world and improve the environment in which we live.
Do you see from Satyam’s accomplishments all that can be achieved through a
concentrated mind!
What are some actions you can do to help others? Make a list and keep a record as a
check on your acts of selfless service to others. Simple kindness every day in thoughts
words and deeds can be recorded to help you become noble persons.

LESSONS DATTA LEARNED FROM THE BOY
“O King, in this world, yogis and their equals live like children”
A little boy has no worries about wife and children. Praise or rebuke from others does not
affect him. He is always happy playing by himself. I learnt from him that a yogi (an
enlightened person) should be like him.
Datta learnt that there is really no great difference between a little boy and a yogi.
Both are free from worry, both of them are happy.
Whereas the boy does not make any effort because he has no knowledge, the yogi
knowing everything and having attained God remains actionless (performing
actions without attachment or the thought that he is performing the actions)
through cognition (awareness, reasoning and understanding).

THE KING AND THE FROG
Once there was a king called Dharma. King Dharma was an excellent ruler and always
helped all the people in his kingdom.
In order to have good timely crops even in the dry season King Dharma ordered that a
huge dam be built that would provide water to the fields and homes during the dry
season.
The ministers of the king started planning the dam construction and hired many persons
to work on the project. When the project was underway King Dharma decided to go and
visit the site and check on the progress of the work.
On arriving at the site of the dam construction, the king was very pleased to see all the
workers hard at work building the dam. The work was almost completed.
King Dharma thought, “Oh what a great King I am! Look how I am thinking of the good
of the people, many persons are getting a job on this project and can provide food and
other things to their family, people will also get good drinking water when the dam is
completed. I am indeed taking care of my subjects!”
At that time the king’s spiritual teacher (Guru) arrived. King Dharma was overjoyed on
seeing his Guru and paid his respects by prostrating (bowing) at the feet of the Guru.
King Dharma thought it was auspicious or fortunate to have the Guru come and bless the
project.
The Guru spoke to the king, “Oh King Dharma, please get some of the workers to break
that large rock in the dam.”
The king ordered that the rock shown be broken. As the rock gradually broke, the
workers found a crack in the rock and a small cavity or hole had formed in the rock. A
small frog jumped out of the hole in the rock.
The Guru spoke, “Oh King, have you been looking after the frog in that rock? Did you
give it water and food?”
King Dharma replied, “Guruji, no I have not been looking after that frog. In fact I did not
even know that there was a frog in the rock!”
The Guru then explained to him, “God looks after all of His creation from a great King
like you to this little frog.
91
He gives us good ideas, strength and guidance to do good works but He is doing
everything. You are only like the tool in the hands of God and He takes care of All.”
King Dharma realized his mistake in becoming proud. He said, “Oh Guruji, please
forgive me for becoming proud and making the mistake of thinking that I am so great. I
am only a servant of God and the people. You have made me to understand this, thank
you.”

SWAMIJI HELPS MR SETTY TO BECOME FREE FROM WORRY
Once there was a person by the name of Anandaraju Setty, he was about 40 years old and
was very kind and helpful. However, he would get angry easily and scold even persons
he helped.
Due to his helpful nature he had amassed a lot of debts. He sold his wife’s jewelry and
opened a grocer’s shop and was managing the household somehow.
Setty suffered from severe ulcers and abdominal pains. His children were in public high
school so the family expenses were high and he could not afford to buy medicines.
When he was suffering like this his parent came to see him and said, “A Swami has come
to Kesare, we have gone to him many a time. He is a very great person and has
supernatural powers. Go and see him and it may be of use to you.”
Setty said, “I don’t believe in Swami’s and such stupids. I am singing in praise of God
regularly myself. Are all these Swami’s greater than God?”
His parents thought that he was stubborn and left him to suffer his fate. However his
sister came to visit with her baby and also gave an account of the Swami and how he had
helped her baby who was sick only seven days after birth.
Setty thought, “What is this Swami so great?” Next day he went to have the blessings of
Swami. As Swami was giving an interview he went in.
“Yes yes and your shop is in Chamundi-vanam, isn’t it? My uncle resides there and I
studied in the public high school there. Your children also attended that school. I came to
your shop many a time. You have helped me. You know singing go and sit on the rock
and sing, I will call you,” said the Swami.
“Have I helped him? I don’t remember. Maybe I gave him some candy from my shop
when he was a school boy. I don’t have the means to do any more than that,” thinking
like this Setty became immersed in devotional singing. He went on singing until noon.
Swami sent for him and started to narrate the entire life history of Setty. You lost
everything and suffered like this and got these diseases. Setty became speechless and
tears streamed from his eyes. “Swami please save me from my debts.”
Swami came and Setty told him about the stomach ache. “This is why I asked you to sit
without going away.”
Swami gave a talisman for the debts and a conch which he asked Setty to use and make a
paste and lick it before eating. Setty did as the Swami instructed.
Setty would have loose bowels whenever he drank or ate anything. After using the paste
the stomach problems were gone. He would fall asleep without any worries. He began
visiting the Swami regularly. But his habit of quarrelling did not go away.
One day Swami asked him to bring milk for him. His joy knew no bounds. He brought
the flask of milk personally to give to the Swami. One day Swami’s retinue did not allow
him to go inside to give the milk to Swami. Setty thought they were using their authority
to stop him but did not say anything. He was burning with anger while he sat with the
flask beside him.
After a long time Swami came and asked, “Where is the milk?”
“I have brought it long ago,” he said angrily as he tilted the flask to pour the milk in a
glass. There was no milk in the flask.
“If I ask you to bring anything, your duty is only to fetch it. That’s all. Why do you have
to become angry?” said the Swami softly.
Setty’s health improved, his money problems remained the same but strange enough he
was not worried about them. His anger did not go away but was reduced and his
differences with family members improved.
These simple acts freed him from worries and the transformation which dawned in him
made him happier :-)

LESSONS DATTA LEARNED FROM THE HONEY THIEF
The honey thief contrives to smoke out the bees and steal the honey.
Thus the strong rob the weak of their wealth. Just or unjust, this is the way of the world.
Datta learnt from the honey thief that if a person is stingy and hides his wealth
without himself enjoying it or allowing others to share it, he risks being robbed by
someone!

THE KING AND THE SANNYASI
(Bhakti Mala 1992 as taught by Swamiji)
Once upon a time, a Sannyasi (holy man) came to the palace of a king. He was full of
wisdom and his face beamed with a smile suggestive of divine peace that he enjoyed
within him.
Attracted by the majestic appearance of the Sannyasi, the king said, “Oh Sage, great is
my pleasure in meeting you. In all humility and with due regards I am pleased to offer my
hospitality to you. I will consider myself lucky if you will be pleased to be my guest at
least for a few days.”
The sage was so much moved by the entreaties of the king that he could not refuse the
hospitality. He decided to stay with the king for some time.
A couple of days passed and the king was very happy in the company of the sage. One
day, the king in all earnestness requested the sage to accept some money as gift, which
would help him build a beautiful hermitage. The sage agreed to accept the amount at the
time of his leaving the place. On that very day as the sage was reclining on his seat for
rest, by chance he heard the routine prayers of the king. The king was praying as follows,
“Oh God, make me more wealthy, let my kingdom expand further, let me get everything
that is wonderful in this world,” and so on.
As the sage heard the prayers of the king he felt very much distressed. He went straight to
the king and said that he wanted to leave the palace immediately. The king was surprised
to hear this and said, “Oh Sage, you were willing to stay in my palace for a few days
more and accept my gift at the time of your leaving. Why are you suddenly deciding to
leave my home immediately? Have I done anything that displeased you?”
The sage replied, “Oh King, hitherto I was under the impression that you were really a
king. But now after hearing your prayers I realized that you are only a beggar. Although
you are a king, you are begging many things from God. I do not want anything from a
beggar.” So saying the sanyasi left the palace forever.
Another point to note is that a devotee of God, like the Sannyasi of this story, is not
worried if there is any lack of comforts in his life. He seeks nothing but God. He is
therefore fully satisfied with anything that he gets in life.

3. Bumblebee Breath for Kids
Doing Bumblebee Breath in the progressive stages below introduces children to the
importance of the senses and the idea that sometimes closing off our senses and finding a
‘quiet place’ can help to calm, soothe and focus - not to mention it feels really good! That
is often a novel concept for a child, especially in this era of overwhelming buzzy-ness. I
have also found using this progression keeps even the most active children engaged and
involved in the process. These same children are the ones who look at me in awe after
step 3 and say, "Wow, can we do that again?!". Try it with your children or students and
let me know your experience!
Bumblebee Breath
1) Begin in Sitting Mountain Pose with a tall, straight spine. Take a slow, deep breath in
through your nose. Hold your breath for as long as comfortably possible, then exhale with
the buzzing sound of a bee Hummmmmm,”. Let the buzzing sound start in your tummy
area, the sound goes up and up to your throat then through the top of your head.
2) Try it again, but this time with your eyes closed. Focus on the humming sound.
Notice the vibration created in your lips.
108
3) Try the same breath again with eyes closed and ears blocked with your hands. Notice
your focus go inward where there is peace and calm. Repeat this breath several times.
Discuss your experience.
Mini Vacation. Some people have noticed that practicing Bumble Bee Breath
(especially with eyes and ears closed) is like taking a mini vacation. Do you agree? Why
or why not? Did you take a vacation in your mind while practicing Bumble Bee Breath?
Where did you go?
Focus on the Sound. Instead of taking a mini vacation, try focusing on the humming
sound. As you notice your thoughts drift off, try and bring your focus back to the sound
of the hum. How was this different from the experience of taking a mini vacation?
Where did you ‘go’?
Remember to ask your child or students about their experience while practicing
Bumblebee Breath. Helping children to tie-in what they've learned, whether it's a breath,
physical pose or piece of yogic wisdom, to their experience in mind and body, will
empower and inspire them over time to make yoga a part of their life.
109
ACTIVITY
Bee Dancing
Bees use dancing-type movements to let other bees know the locations of flowers. Kids
can learn the types of movements used by bees and implement them into their own bee
dances. Bees use their movements to indicate how far away flowers are. Moving in a
circle means they are nearby, while a wagging movement with the abdomen means
flowers are far away. To direct other bees to flowers, a bee will move in a straight line,
to the left or to the right while wagging its abdomen. Kids can use similar movements to
direct their classmates to objects in the classroom. Divide the class into small groups.
Each group needs a stack of cards with different classroom objects written on them.
One child will pick a card and do a bee dance to show the others where the object is.
Other group members will guess the location based on his bee dance.
Musical Flowers
This bee game is a variation on musical chairs. Make several large flower cutouts from
poster board. You'll need one less flower than there are kids. Laminate the flowers to
make them more durable. Tape the flowers to the floor in different areas of the room.
Taping them down will keep them more secure and help prevent kids from slipping. Play
music such as "Flight of the Bumblebee" and have the kids buzz around the room like
bees. When the music stops, the kids will try to land on a flower. The child who doesn't
get to a flower is out of that round. Remove one flower from the floor and play again. To
make the game move faster, remove two or three flowers after each round.
Nectar Relay
One bee can hold about enough nectar to fit into an eye dropper on each trip. Use
actual eyedroppers in this relay race so kids can see how many trips it would take to
make a significant amount of nectar. At one end of a playing field, each team needs a
cup of water to represent nectar. Each team also needs a smaller empty cup at the
other end. The cup sizes don't matter as long as each team has the same size. The first
player on each team will run with an empty eye dropper down to the cup of water. She
will fill the eye dropper and run back to the starting line where the empty cup is waiting.
She will squeeze the water into the cup and pass the eye dropper to the next person.
The first team to fill the collection cup wins the relay.
Honey Taste Test
Before letting kids taste honey, check with their parents to make sure there aren't any
allergies. If all of the kids can have honey, bring in a jar for taste testing. Let the kids try
the honey on bread. You can also use the honey in a recipe for cookies, bread or other
baked goods. Another option is to bring in a honeycomb for the kids to inspect and try.
Look for a honeycomb at a specialty market or at a honey farm.

THE POWER RESIDES WITH ME
Meaning:
Whatever I do with my body, speech, / mind or with other senses of my body,
or with my intellect and soul / or with my innate natural tendencies
I offer (dedicate) everything to God (Lord Narayana).
Brief Explanation
God has given the capacity to use the body for actions, mouth for speech and mind for
thoughts.
You make all your thoughts, speech and actions holy by dedicating them to the Lord.
Thus, you pray that all thoughts, speech and actions be performed as a service to the
Lord.

LESSONS DATTA LEARNED FROM THE BOA CONSTRICTOR
Datta learnt from the boa-constrictor that a person has to experience happiness or
pain depending on the type of actions (good or bad) he has performed.
The boa-constrictor does not go out hunting for food but sits quietly waiting for the right
animal to wander by. After eating a large animal the boa-constrictor will rest for a week.
Datta learnt from the boa-constrictor that food whether tasty or dry, whether much or
little comes providentially to everyone and one should be content with it. If it is not
available one should simply fast. Not only this, foregoing even sleep, one should ever
remain firmly devoted to the Self. I learnt all this from the Boa-constrictor.
113
DISTRESS CAUSED BY DESIRING FOOD
Satyam and Varalakshmi stayed with their aunt Venkamma at the Shiva temple in
Proddutur. Aunt Venkamma explained to Satyam about begging alms of food and sent
him to different houses for begging.
When Satyam returned with the food he would give a share to his sister Varalakshmi and
then divided the remainder and offer it to the mendicants or beggars outside the temple. If
there was any food left then only he would be allowed to eat. If there was no food he
would have to fast that day.
One day while eating the food his aunt came to Satyam and told him to stop and keep the
food in his mouth. In this way she was training Satyam that he should not even be
affected by the taste for food.
However the tongue is very difficult to control. One day Satyam was invited to a wedding
and he had heard that laddoos (indian sweets) were prepared for the wedding. Satyam
especially loved laddoos and had gone with the hope of eating laddoos for dinner. During
dinner Satyam called the caterers many times but they served him all the dishes except
the laddoos!
Satyam thought, “What is the benefit of all these dishes when I cannot get the dish that I
want?”
All the other food appeared as “no food” without laddoo! Satyam went home totally
dejected, with a sad face and without getting any laddoo. Varalakshmi seeing Satyma so
distressed felt sorry for her brother.
That night Satyam’s sleep was filled with dreams of laddoo only. At one o’clock Satyam
was woken by his aunt with a slap from a wooden fan. Satyam sat up and meditated on
his craving for laddoo. (Why am I so obsessed with wanting laddoo, I did not get it but
there were other food why was I so bothered that I did not get a laddoo, why am I so sad,
is laddoo happiness?). After thinking like this through the night, by the morning the
craving for laddoos had completely left Satyam.
At day break some persons brought a basket of laddoos to offer at the temple. The priest
was absent so Satyam had to perform the Shiva Lingam abhishekham (bath of Shiva
Linga). After the laddoos were offered, Satyam started distributing them to the persons
gathered at the temple. Varalakshmi fearing that none would remain for her brother saved
one for him. All day she requested Satyam to eat the laddoo but Satyam did not want it.
“When I wished for it yesterday, does it come to me today? I won’t eat it. Get away” this
was Satyam’s obstinacy.

DATTA KRIYA YOGA AND HATHA YOGA EXERCISES
START EACH YOGA SESSION BY CHANTING THE GURU PADUKA SHLOKAM
Once the Guru Paduka Shlokam is chanted the Guru is present in a subtle form to guide
your yoga practice
1. SAMASITOSHANA PRANAYAMA
Repeat this four times. This exercise is good for helping to make children less hyper
active.
It is a tranquilizing kriya. Don’t do this exercise with children if they have the cold,
are depressed, constipated or have low blood pressure.
2. COBRA POSE
i. Lie flat on your tummy with head to one side and arms on the side.
ii. Place hands on ground at shoulder level, keep elbows tucked close to body.
iii. Lift upper body with hands into the cobra and look up. Keep your shoulders
relaxed down while in the Cobra Pose. Can you hiss like a snake?
115
iv. Lower body to floor and lie with head to one side.
You can repeat the Cobra Pose. While in the cobra pose, slowly turn your head to the
right and look to the back. Hold for a count of five and turn head to the front. Then turn
your head to the left side and look back. Hold for a count of five and then return head to
the forward position. Lower body and rest with head to one side.
116
WHEEL POSE
2. Place palms on the floor with fingertips pointed toward your feet.
4. Knees are about hips-width apart and feet are flat on the floor.
5. Supporting weight with hands and feet, lift up first onto the crown of the head.
6. Come up off the head and you are now in a wheel shape with bellies lifted to the sky
and the body forming an arch.
7. To come out of Wheel Pose, first coming down to the crown of the head, then rolling
the spine to the floor from the neck to the tailbone.
WHEEL POSE
Major Benefits
Keeps your spine healthy and flexible / Strengthens arms and legs
Be Careful
Starting from the upper body, come down slowly and gently, and then rest in a counter
pose. e.g. lie on the floor, bend your knees and draw them up towards your chest.
117
Hand Gesture with 3 Part Yogic Breath for balancing the EARTH element in the body
ii. Touch the tips of the thumb and the ring finger of both
hands. Do not apply any pressure with the thumb on
the ring finger.
iii. Hold this mudra (hand gesture) at the heart level and a few inches in front of
the body.
iv. Close your eyes and inhale and exhale listening to the sound of the breath.
Take nice slow deep breaths (3 part yogic breath). You can practice this for
one or two minutes.
Everyone's heard of a snowman. But making a slithering snow snake is ssssserious fun.
Instead of making a snowman of 3 large balls, try a snow snake made of as many -
basketball-size snow sections as you can make. Once you've lined your snow snake balls
up, carve out a pointed head and rattling tail at either end of the snake.
Decorate your snake with bits of food, such as raisins. These will be good treats for
hungry birds and squirrels.
If you live in a warm, tropical climate find a beach with sand and make a sand snake in
the same way you would the snow snake!

LESSONS DATTA LEARNED FROM THE HARLOT NAMED PINGALA
Pingala was a harlot (courtesan) and I have learnt from her also. I shall now narrate that
story to you.
In the holy city of Videha, the capital of King Janaka, there lived a courtesan named
Pingala. One day she was overcome by the desire for wealth and pleasures. She stood as
usual at the door of her house, looking for men. Unfortunately, no one turned up that day.
She stood waiting for a very long time with her eyes keen and desires strong. Midnight
approached. Her legs began to drag and she grew weary. When she went inside
disappointed, the desire for wealth and pleasures would sprout again. She could not
remain inside but went to the door again. Thus going inside and coming out again and
again, she became physically exhausted. Though midnight had passed, still no one had
turned up.
Strange indeed are the ways of the Divine. As a result of her exhaustion, her longing for
wealth as well as for pleasures gradually left her. She even regretted that she had sunk so
low, and her desire for pleasures vanished. Pingala became disgusted with herself.
Without it, bondage to the body cannot be loosened and one cannot reach a state of
freedom from desires. By God’s grace, freedom from passion was kindled in her and she
began to think to herself.
She thought, “Shame on me, unable to control my senses, I have lamented, all the while
waiting for a mean man who desires a woman. Shame on me, for having the miserable
desire that someone would come to make me happy.”
“Forgetting that God who is truth, who is eternal and the one who gives happiness is ever
near, I imagined, that if a low and unrighteous man were to hold this body, I would get
happiness. How wicked is my mind!”
“I thought this body to be beautiful and was carried away by my beauty! What is the
body made of? There are two legs like pillars, two arms, a backbone like a stick joining
the hands and legs. There is the chest made up of bones like a rafter in the ceiling. All
this is covered by skin. There are openings in the body from which nothing but filth
comes out daily.”
124
“How much effort I have made to beautify this thing called the body! What a fool I have
been! I am living in the holy city of Videha and I am thinking of another person
forgetting God, who resides in the temple of this body and gives peace and happiness.”
“What happens to my body with time? This body will grow old eventually, sickness will
come and the body will perish. What is the use of loving and wanting perishable thing
(things that decay and rot)? I shall not allow myself to be consumed with the body and
desires for satisfying the sense of pleasure anymore.”
“God’s grace alone has fallen on me. How else should such good sense prevail (come) in
a sinner like me?”
“Considering God (Sri Hari) as the well-wisher of all and dearest to me. Considering
these good thoughts have come to me as His command, I shall think of Him and
surrender my thoughts, words and actions to Him. He alone can save persons like me. He
alone is my protector.”
Thus when dispassion became steady, Pingala attained marvelous tranquility and peace of
mind.
Therefore O King Yadu, I learnt from the events of Pingala’s life, that desire
is sorrow and desirelessness is the highest happiness.
125
START EACH YOGA SESSION BY CHANTING THE GURU PADUKA SHLOKAM
Once the Guru Paduka Shlokam is chanted the Guru is present in a subtle form to guide
your yoga practice
Sit bending the legs at the knees both the soles of the
feet touching each other.
Joint pains in the fingers and muscular pains relating to palm get relieved.
126
i. Relax hands and wrist and fingers gently
by sprinkling (shaking) many times to
loosen the joints.
i. Lie on your back, arms beside your body and palms of your hand on the
ground.
ii. Bend your knees and place your feet on the ground
iii. Lift both legs slowly upwards (without bending at the knees) until the
soles of the feet are facing up to the sky. Legs will be at 90° to the
ground.
2. Inhale and raise the head, shoulders, back and upper arms off
the floor arching the back and raising the chest up. Tilt the head
back and place the top of the head flat on the floor.
Fish Pose : Keep eyes open wide like a fish swimming in water.
128
CLASS ACTIVITY
In order to encourage children to think and speak well of others, let the class sit in
a circle. Mix the children so those who group together are separated. Then ask each
child to take a turn and say one nice quality he/she admires about the person on
his/her left.
You can ask the class to observe all the small acts of kindness and good deeds that
everyone is doing for the next day. On the following day ask each person to choose
one person they observed and say what good deeds they observed the person
doing.
People hang torans above the doors of their houses to welcome visitors and
decorate the doorway.
People from various parts of India make torans differently. This is how a
traditional toran is usually made:
Step 2: Tie the leaves to the cord at equal distances from each other. In between the
leaves, tie the garland.
Step 3: Fix nails at the two ends of the door frame and tie the ends of the toran to
it.
This is the traditional toran. Try to make different kinds using different materials.
You can use paper balls, bells, streamers, cloth with patch work or even beads.

LESSONS DATTA LEARNED FROM THE OSPREY
The little bird, one day had a bit of meat in its mouth, when a bigger and stronger bird
saw it. What do you think happened? What did the bigger bird do?
The bigger bird attacked the little bird for the piece of meat. What did the little bird do?
The clever little bird immediately dropped the meat. Then the bigger bird left the little
bird and followed the bit of meat. The little bird escaped the imminent danger of attack
by the larger bird.
I learnt from the bird that if I keep a thing coveted by others, it will subject
me to severe anguish and therefore it is wise to give such things voluntarily.
132
THE FARMER AND THE BASIL GARDEN
In the early days people would bring garlands for Swami during the prayer service, he
would place these on the photos on the wall. Gradually the garlands were so large he
could not help but wear them himself. The devotees were feeling very happy seeing the
Swami wearing the garlands that they had made. One devotee Dwaraka who had been
with Swami from childhood did not want anyone else’s garland to be larger than his and
would ensure that every day he presented the largest basil (tulsi) garland to Swami.
One day a farmer came to Swami’s place asking, “Who is it that is called by the name
Satyanarayana Swami?”
Swami was there himself and replied, “Say what you want, tell me the thing and it will
reach him.”
The farmer guessed that this person must be a close disciple of that revered Swami. The
farmer said, “Are there thieves and rowdies around your Swami? What kind of holy
person is he?”
The farmer who was suffering now became angry, “Why should I talk with you? When
that revered Swami comes out I will speak with him.”
Just then someone came and prostrated at the feet of the Swami. The farmer was
confused and asked, “Who is this?” The new comer replied, “This is the holy and revered
Satyanarayana Swami.”
The farmer was feeling embarrassed, took off his cloth from around his head (as a mark
of respect) and paid respects at the feet of the Swami.
The farmer replied, “Venerable Sir, I have a basil garden here in this city. That is the
source of my livelihood. Of late every week thieves have been coming into it. The boys
are stout like buffaloes and pick the leaves, toss it into bags and run away with them. On
enquiring I have come to know that they thieve the leaves only for your sake. Please save
me.”
The Swami remained staring at him in surprise. “How much losses have you incurred on
account of the boys?” asked the Swami.
“What man! Have you got a job Dwaraka?” asked the Swami immediately on seeing him.
“Only the day before yesterday, I joined training because of your grace.” said Dwaraka.
“Oh because of my grace every week you are able to buy a bag of holy basil garland and
offer it to me, aren’t you?
“Because of my grace, aren’t you thieving in gardens!” shouted Swami. “Eh, Dwaraka,
don’t pretend. Did you steal the basil or not??
“Previously you used to steal coconuts. I told you to reform yourself but you did not pay
heed. I kept you close hoping for your betterment, but you don’t seem to have the luck
for improvement.” Swami spoke with an anguished heart. Dwaraka felt almost like
crying.
Dwaraka had seen the harsh punishment Swami had given to someone only a few days
before for stealing. He was very afraid. “Swami pardon me only for this time. Hereafter
I’ll guard myself carefully against these bad habits. Please forgive me.” He begged
Swami.
Dwaraka was sorry for what he had done. The Swami knew that stealing was wrong
action but luckily for Dwaraka he gave him a second chance to try and improve himself.
Swami gave the farmer the money as compensation for the losses he incurred due to
Dwarka’s stealing of the basil (Tulsi) leaves from his garden.
The farmer suffered a loss from the robbers. Later he went to the person in authority to
get justice. If he had tried to stop the boys it is possible he could have been hurt.
By taking the help of the Swami or an adult in authority the farmer was able to recover
his loss. Similarly if you or someone you know is treated unkindly or unfairly you can
take the help of an adult to prevent further suffering to yourself or the person.

LESSONS DATTA LEARNED FROM THE SPIDER
The spider stirs the treads in its stomach causes them to come out of its body and with
this material it weaves its web.
Observing this, it occurred to me that the process of creation also takes place in the
same way.
In the beginning there is one Absolute Conscious Energy. When the desire to create
comes to Him, He creates from Himself three qualities (gunas) like the threads of the
spider. These threads possess creative power and from them are created the world with
many different forms. Just like the web that a spider weaves with the thread from its
stomach.
When the Absolute Conscious Energy will it, He swallows up the creation and remains
changeless, like the spider.
Although the web comes from the spider it looks different to the spider. Similarly, the
world comes from the Absolute, but it appears to be different.
Although the thread comes from the spider, the spider is still complete. The Supreme
Being remains ever full, is beyond difference (although the world with its many
different objects comes from the Supreme) and the Supreme Being is full of knowledge
and bliss.
O King, I learnt all this from the Spider. I learnt how the processes of
creation and destruction are caused by that One Supreme Reality.

SWAMIJI’S MANTRA
Swamiji loves music and has conferred on many renowned musicians various
scholarly titles. There was one very famous vina player he was about 80 or
90 years old and very popular in India. Swamiji wanted to confer the
Vidhwan title to this scholar in music.
The elderly musician did not like Swamiji and started to say on his television
shows many bad things about Swamiji. This Ganapathy Swami is only 70
years and thinks he knows music and wants to give me a title. He is a false
Swami, what does he know about music?”
Everywhere he went in all his concerts and public appearances he was saying
negative words only about Swamiji. Swamiji called his devotees and told
them please request once more that the vina player come and receive the title.
They said, “Swamiji he is not a good person he is saying so many bad things
about you. Why do you want to give him any title, he does not deserve this.”
Swamiji replied, “No don’t say like this, he is a very experienced person and
deserves the title. I want to give to him. It does not matter if he does not like
me, I like him very much. Please request him to come.”
Swamiji sent four famous violinists to request the elderly vina player to come
to the ashram. When they met him they said, “Sir, our Swamiji wishes you to
please come to Mysore ashram and receive the Vidhwan title for your music.
We do not like you but our Swamiji likes you very much and has requested
us to please take this message to you.”
The elderly musician thought, “What after all the bad things that I have said
about this Swami still he wants to give me a title, still he says he likes me
very much!”
145
He said to the devotees, “Okay I will come but I will not do any prostrations
or bowing before the Swami. I will not bring any flowers to offer. I will not
accept any titles.”
The devotees said, “It doesn’t matter. Please come once to Mysore and bring
your vina and play a few tunes. You need not bow or bring any flowers.”
The elderly vina player visited Mysore ashram and played for Swamiji. After
the performance he met Swamiji.
Swamiji enquired, “How is your family? How are your children, your brother
Chandrashekar is a devotee of Swamiji?”
He replied, “What is this? You are not an arrogant Swami! You are asking
about my family. I heard so many people say you do not meet anyone, you
are a proud Swami!”
Swamiji said, “What, who said like that? Never mind, even you were saying
about me. Swamiji likes you very much and your music.”
Swamiji and the elderly musician spoke for some more time. Then this
elderly vina musician, the Vidhwan, fully prostrated at Swamiji’s feet.
After leaving the ashrama, during his concerts he would say that he does not
know anything about music, Ganapathy Swamiji is the only master of music.
He kept on telling about Swamiji like this after his visit. Swamiji sent a
message not to publicize like that.
Swamiji says that his mantra is, “You don’t like me, I like you!”
He loves everyone equally.
146
In the same way in order to be better persons we too must practice this
mantra “You don’t like me, I like you!” and should have love for everyone.
When you see God in everyone it is easy to love everyone.

LESSONS DATTA LEARNED FROM THE INSECT
O King, a certain kind of bee catches an insect and keeping it in the nest, it
goes round and round the creature buzzing loudly.
Out of fear, the insect stares hard at the bee, concentrating its mind
completely on it. By doing so, the form of the insect gradually undergoes a
change and it takes on the form of the bee.
Similarly, men also obtain the form of those on whom they concentrate their
minds completely out of fear or devotion or out of hatred or friendship.
Oh King, I learnt :
If a small insect can transform its body, can there be any doubt
that man possessing intellect and the faculty of meditation and
concentration will be liberated after the body goes and obtain the same
form as the one (deity) on which he meditated?

STORY OF VALMIKI
Along the banks of the river Ganga there was a thick forest many sages built their
hermitage in that forest for their 'tapas' (penance); that means they meditated on God.
Among them was a sage by the name of Prachetasa. He had, a son called Ratnakara.
When he was a very young boy, one day he went into the forest. While playing he lost
his way and began to cry. Just then a hunter came there looking for a prey. He saw the
chubby boy and fondled and pacified him. The hunter had no children. He took the boy
to his hut in the midst of the jungle.
Ratnakara's father searched for his son all around the hermitage, but could not
find him. Finally he and his wife thought that the boy had become the prey of some wild
beast. Both wept very much.
The hunter and his wife brought up the lad with great love. Ratnakara forgot his
parents. He took the hunter for his father and the hunter's wife for his mother. He was
taught how to hunt by the father. Ratnakara was a clever boy and learnt it quickly. He
became a hunter with a sure aim.
To the birds and beasts of the forest, he became verily Yama, the God of Death.
When he came of age, his foster father searched for
a bride and celebrated his marriage with a beautiful
girl from a hunter’s family. In a few years she gave
birth to some children. Thus Ratnakara's family
grew in size. It became very difficult for him to
provide food and clothing to his large family. So he
took to robbery. He began to attack people going
from one village to another, frightening them and
taking away all that they had. If they opposed him,
he killed them.
153
road waiting for a victim. It happened that the great sage Narada was passing that way.
Narada had his favorite musical instrument, a Veena, in his hands. As he played on the
Veena, he was singing a song in praise of God. When he was thus lost in joy, suddenly
Ratnakara rushed at him. He lifted the stout staff in his hands and shouted, "Look here!
Hand over all your possessions or else I'll break your head."
But Narada was not an ordinary man. He was a divine sage. He was not
frightened by the loud shouts of Ratnakara. He smilingly said, "My dear man, all that I
have is this old Veena and the rags I wear; if you want them, you can certainly take
them. Why should you break my head for these?"
Narada sat beneath a tree and as he played on the Veena, sang a song in praise of
God. It was sweet like the song of cuckoo. Ratnakara was deeply moved. Noticing the
change, the sage Narada paused in his song and said, "Brother, stealing is a sin. Killing
animals is also sinful. Why do you do such evil?"
"Sire, what can I do?” Ratnakara replied, “I have a large family. There are my old
parents and my wife and children; they partake of my happiness and my troubles. I have
to provide them with food and clothing. Hunting and stealing are all I know. What else
can I do?"
The sage smiled and said, "My friend, will any member of your family partake of
your sin also? Go and ask them, and bring back their reply."
Ratnakara thought that Narada was trying a trick him to make his escape. Narada
understood it and again said, "Well, child, if you do not trust me, you can tie me to this
tree and then go."
Ratnakara thought that was all right. He tied Narada to a tree and went home.
154
On reaching home, he first went to his father and said, "Father, I rob people to get
food and clothing for you all. It seems that is a sin. Do you not share in that sin?"
His father was angry and said, "You sinner, you should not do such bad things.
Am I to share your sins? No, never. You have to suffer for what you do."
Ratnakara went to his mother and said, "Surely, mother, you will share my sin,
won't you?" But she also scolded him and sent him away. He then went to his wife and
said, "Do you know how I earn to provide you and your children with food and
clothing? It is by robbery. But I steal for your sake. Therefore you are also partners in
my sin. Isn't that so?"
The wife was displeased and said, 'What are you saying? What have we to do
with your sin? You are my husband, and my children are your children. It is your duty
to look after us and give us food and clothing."
Ratnakara's eyes were opened. He realized that he alone was responsible for all
his sins no one else would share his sin. As soon as it was clear to him, he ran to
Narada. He untied the sage and amidst weeping, narrated to him all that had happened at
his home.
Falling at Narada's feet he asked the sage, "Oh, sire now what of me? How can I
atone for all the sins I have committed? You are my only saviour."
Narada lifted him up and wiped his tears. He consoled him saying, "Do not be
afraid. I shall teach you a way to wash off your sins." So he taught Ratnakara the sacred
name of Rama - 'Rama Nam'. He made him sit beneath a tree and asked him to go on
repeating the sacred name of Rama. He said, I shall come here again, Till then you
should not get up and go away." Then the sage departed.
Ratnakara continued his 'tapas’ chanting the name of Rama. His eyes were closed.
His whole mind was concentrated on the chanting of the name of the Lord. He forgot his
existence. He had neither food nor sleep for days and days. And in this way quite a few
155
years passed. An ant-hill grew all around and
above him. He could not even be seen by
anybody.
156
Moral of the Story :
Two wings which take you away from bad habits are (i) good company and (ii)
chanting the name of God. Whatever one meditates on or thinks about continuously
one becomes.
Ratnakara was a hunter and a robber. When Sage Narada (good company) taught him
tapas (chanting the name of God) his thoughts became immersed on the Lord. By
chanting of the name of Sri Rama, he was transformed from a robber into a holy person
known as Sage Valmiki.
