• An information system is a system that takes resources as an input and processes them into
an information product as an output.
• It is a coordinated and organized blend of people, hardware, software, network both
intranets and extranets and internet and data resources.

BIG BAZAAR

• Big Bazaar is an Indian retail chain of hypermarkets, discount department stores,


and grocery stores. The retail chain was founded by KISHORE BIYANI under his parent
organisation Future Group.
• Big Bazaar is also the parent chain of Food Bazaar, Fashion at Big Bazaar (abbreviated
as fbb) and eZone.
• It is also the sister organisation of many outlets like Brand Factory, Home Town etc.
TARGETED • This multi-level shopping meccas stocks
COSTUMER everything from food to fridges, and cookware to
clothes.
• However, the Big Bazaar isn't an ordinary
department store. It's been especially designed to
appeal to the middle-class Indian consumer.
• The large and growing young working population
is the proffered costumer segment.
INVENTORY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

• Companies generally use inventory management to avoid product shortage or overstock.


Inventory Management System helps in managing all your sales, accounting, stock, and
customer data.
• The types of inventories used by Big Bazaar are:
• Cycle Inventory is employed for the FMCG product category and Food Category as the turnover
of these products is high and after a period they get expired.
• Safety Level of Inventory is adopted for Apparel as the cost of these products is high and they
can be retained for longer span.
• Seasonal Inventory is used for the products which are in demand for only peak season.

THE MIS IN BIG BAZAAR

• Two centralised servers are used:


• The main server
• The back up server which can take over from the main server in five minutes in case of
a problem
• Each of the servers has its own storage system with monitoring hard disks
• The information is backed up on CDs continuously on a daily basis while the entire system
is backed up by some excellent wiring by JD International
• There are 15 transaction counters in Big Bazaar and the recording of transactions at each of
these counters is done using REM.
THE MIS IN BIG BAZAAR

• The database used for storage is called the POSH database, which is an in-house production
of Big Bazaar .
• Receipts of transactions are cash, credit or in the form of Sodexo passes, which are sent to
the HQ on a monthly basis and then converted to cash
• The number of transactions made per day are approx. 3000-4000 on weekdays to 5000-6000
on weekends. All transactions at any terminal is stored directly onto the POSH database
• A package from oracle, oracle finance, is used for this purpose.
• The financials are sent to the HO on a daily basis
ERP IN BIG BAZAAR

• Enterprise Resource Planning which is software used for business process management that
allows any organization to use an information system of integrated applications to do many
back office functions related to information technology and manages the business.
• The functions of the ERP employed by Big Bazaar are:
• Product ordering
• Merchandising buying
• Inventory Management
• Stock Transfer
SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT

STOCK DATABASE:
• In this all the product’s data will be available in a proper alignment. Instead of going and
searching for the stock, the details of stock will be available in just one click.
• SAP ERP is an enterprise resource planning software developed by a German company
SAP, to manage the inventory system of different business and improve customer
relationship management.
• Once the stock comes, the person in charge will check the stock for defects. If there is any
defect, the stock will be returned to the supplier and if it clear all its standards then the
stock will be updated in the stock database.
SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT

• Once the stock is finished, purchase order will be created automatically and send to supplier
database.
EMPLOYEE DATABASE:
• This will include the data about salaries, leaves, performance etc of the employees. This will
help in giving possible rewards to the employees for their good performance.
CUSTOMER DATABASE:
• This database will include the data regarding the customer who visit Big Bazaar. This
database will include details like, customer’s name, address, customer id, customer phone
number, customer’s occupation. This will help in recognizing the customer and provide
them with membership cards.
SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT

SUPPLIERS DATABASE:
• Suppliers details, transactions, payments etc. will be stored in this database. Simultaneously,
the details will be sent to the stock database and if there is a shortage in the stock of any
product, information will be sent to the respective supplier for the supply of the product.
• This will result in an effective stock management. After converting the data in a proper and
accessible manner, the data will be provided on all the systems through Pilot Run method in
which all the data will be made available on the server which is connected to all the
computers present in the work area.
• All pallets and boxes have RFID. It helps checking
RFID IN if any material has gone missing during the
transport
BIG BAZAAR • Auto checking of correct boxes into correct
vehicles with the help of RFID. Alarm users if
wrong loading is done.
• Helps identification of product movement.
Identify which products moves faster on Friday or
Wednesday .
• 16% reduction in product stockouts since
adoption of RFID.
CONCLUSION

• The applicability of the IS has ensured that the supermarket has excelled and has also
become a pioneer in the industry, largely due to radical and perfectly functioning
Information Systems
• The effectiveness of the Info System is greatly brought out by the efficient supply chain and
delivery system that Big Bazaar have employed.
• Use of information system in retail sector is resulting in an exponential increase in the sales,
customer relationships etc. Simultaneously customers are finding it easy and convenient to
shop these days.
