ASSIGNMENT

BSCHE- 5 PARTICLE TECHNOLOGY

SIZE REDUCTION

EXAMPLE: 10.1 ( Arjun Ghimire, Food Engineering Fundamentals, First edition 2017 )

Food is milled from 6 mm to 0.0012mm using a 10 Hp motor. Would this motor be adequate to

reduce the size of the particles to 0.0008mm ? Assume Rittinger’s equation and that 1 Hp =

745.5 W.

GIVE:

𝑋1= 6mm = 6 ×10−3 m

𝑋2= 0.0012 = 0.0012 × 10−3m

E= 10 Hp = 10 ×745.5W = 7455W

REQUIRED:

Would that motor be adequate to reduce the size of the particle

SOLN;

Using Rittinger’s equation, from (14.5-4)

1 1
E = 𝐾𝑅 (𝑋 − )
2 𝑋1

1 1
7455 = 𝐾𝑅 {(0.0012 × 10−3 ) − (6 × 10−3 )}

𝐾𝑅 = 0.0089

To produce particle of 0.0008mm, Using Rittinger’s equation

1 1
E = 0.0089 {(0.0008 × 10−3 ) − (6 × 10−3 )}

= 11.123 kW = 15 Hp

Hence, this motor is not adequate to reduce the size of the particle to 0.0008mm.

SIZE REDUCTION

EXAMPLE 10.2 ( Arjun Ghimire, Food Engineering Fundamentals, First edition 2017 )

What is the power required to crush 100 ton/h of limestone if 80% of the feed pass a 2-in screen
1
and 80% of the product a in screen? The work index for limestone is 12.74.
8

GIVEN:

𝑚∗ = 100 ton/h

Wi = 12.74

Size of screen through which 80% feed passes (𝐷𝑝𝑏 ) = 2 × 25.4 = 50.8mm

25.4
Size of screen aperture through which 80% product passes (𝐷𝑝𝑎 ) = = 3.175mm
8

REQUIRED:

Power required to crush

SOLN:

Using equation (10.7)

𝑃 1 1
= 0.3161𝑤𝑖 ( − )
𝑚∗ √𝐷𝑝𝑏 √𝐷𝑝𝑎

1 1
P = 100 ×0.3161 × 12.74 ( − )
√3.175 √50.8

= 169.6 KW
