1. Problem class 5
Consider an ice chest with following dimensions length = 50 cm, width = 40 cm, and height = 30
cm, made of a 3-cm thick insulating material (k = 0.033 W/(m°C) ). The chest is filled with 30 kg
of ice at 0°C. The inner wall surface temperature of the ice chest is assumed to be constant at 0°C.
The latent heat of fusion of ice is 333.7 kJ/kg. The outside wall surface temperature of the chest is
assumed to remain constant at 25°C. How long would it take to completely melt the ice? Assume
negligible heat transfer through the bottom surface.
Diketahui :
k = 0.033 W/(m.°C) Tes = 0oC
T2 = 0°C Height(H) = 0.3 m
T1 = 25°C Length(l) = 0.5 m
L = 333.7 kJ/kg Width(W) = 0.4 m
Mes = 30 kg e = 0.03 m
Assume negligible heat transfer through the bottom surface

Ditanyakan : How long would it take to completely melt the ice

Jawaban :
Luas permukaan (A),
A = 2[(Height x length) + (Width x Height)] + (Length x Width)

A = 2[(0.3x0.5) + (0.4x0.3)] + (0.5x0.4)

A = 2(0.15 + 0.12) + 0.2 = 0.54 + 0.2 = 0.74 m2

2. Problem class 8
An experiment was conducted to measure thermal conductivity of a formulated food. The
measurement was made by using a large plane plate of the food material, which was 5 mm thick.
It was found, under steady-state conditions, that when a temperature difference of 35 oC was
maintained between the two surfaces of the plate, a heat-transfer rate per unit area of 4700 W/m2
was measures near the center of either surface. Calculate the thermal conductivity of the product,
and list two assumptions used in obtaining the result.
Diketahui =
Q/A = 4700 W/m2
e = 5 mm = 0.005 m
∆T = 35oC
