Ana Blandiana

Ana Blandiana (born March 25, 1942, Timisoara), poet, journalist, anti-Communist
dissident. Personality of Romanian literature, during the communist regime has suffered because of
ideological repression. He had the courage to face the communist officials, Radio Free Europe and the
international public opinion made known the true situation in Romania.
After the fall of the regime was involved in the fight for freedom and human rights, was among the first
founders of civil society organizations.
On her real name Otilia Valeria Coman, Gheorghe Coman priest's daughter, graduated in law
and theology, political prisoners, and Otilia Diacu originating from the village Blandiana (White
County).He attended high school in Oradea and the Faculty of Philology of the University of Cluj
(1963 - 1967), where he obtained a degree in Romance Philology.
Between 1973 - 1974, obtained a scholarship to study in the International Program of the
University of Yowa Scriitoricesc City (USA). In 1967 he moved to Bucharest. It was, in the years 1968
- 1977, editor of the "Student Life" and "Amphitheatre", then librarian at the Institute of Fine Arts in
Bucharest in 1975 - 1977, and editor at the Writers' Union in 1977-1979.
Since 1968 has permanent columns to "contemporary" (Antijurnal or Mail), where it will go to
"Literary Romania, where he occupied in 1974-1988, the Atlas box. Literary debut in "Tribuna, Cluj-

In the period 1964 - 1990, publishes over 40 books of poetry, publishing, home and abroad. He began

Eye of the cricket (1981), City of Sand (1983) or prey Star (1985). The literary critic Nicolae

Table of Silence (1977).
The conflict with communist officials triggered a series of poems published in the
"amphitheater" in 1984, are particularly acute with the publication in 1988, volumuluiÎntâmplări on my
street, that will bring the ban to more public. Blandiana name is prohibited, and her books are removed
from libraries.

Throughout her career won several awards, such as the Union of Writers Award for Poetry from
Romania (1969), the Romanian Academy Prize for Poetry (1970), Children's Literature Prize (1980)
Association Award for fiction Writers of Bucharest (1980), International Award "Gotfried von Herder"
(1982).
On 22 December 1989 Blandiana name appears on television as a founding member of the
National Salvation Front, although she was questioned. At the first meeting of new leadership for the
country on 27 December 1989, Vice-President shall be invited, but refused, resigning over a month
because of violence against the opposition and NSFC decision to turn into a political party.
In April 1990 participate in meetings held in University Square in November and is among the
initiators and founders of the Civic Alliance, which will lead between 1991 and 2000. In January 1993
the Council of Europe proposed project of the Memorial to the Victims of Communism and the
Resistance in Sighet, conducted over several years and is today internationally renowned institution.In
May 1993, delivered at the University Sorbonne Paris III and IV of a series of conferences

Office publishes a trilingual volume (Romanian-French-German) of creation Ana Blandiana.
In 1997 received the National Poetry Award Mihai Eminescu and is elected as a member of the
Academy of Poetry "Stéphane Mallarmé", Paris, and in 1998 founded, together with Romulus Rusan,
Sighet Summer School, aimed at teenagers. Member of the European Academy of Poetry, the 2001 is a
founding member of the World Academy of Poetry in Verona constituted under the aegis of UNESCO.
