Cell cycle, cell division

CELL CYCLE
Mitosis
• Takes place in all somatic cells
• Cell division after fertilization , for the growth
of the zygote
• For repair of damaged tissues
• Produces two daughter cells that have the
same chromosome number as the parent cell
Mitosis
Meiosis
• Takes place in germ cells – the wall of the
testis and ovary wall
• For the production of gametes (sperm and
ovum)
• Produces four daughter cells that have half
the chromosome number of the parent cell
• Generates genetic variation due to
recombination during meiosis (synapsis &
crossing over
Binary Fission
• Binary fission ("division in half") is a kind of
asexual reproduction.
• It is the most common form of reproduction in
prokaryotes such as bacteria.
• It occurs in some single-celled Eukaryotes like
Amoeba and Paramecium.
• In binary fission, the fully grown parent cell after
replicating its genetic material, divides into two
equal sized daughter cells. The genetic material is
equally split. The daughter cells are genetically
identical.
