ESSENTIAL QUESTION:
How does having a good character help in becoming an effective leader?

II. INTERACTION

The teacher explains the process of describing characters.

CHARACTERIZATION: A way of describing character’s traits, qualities, actions and behavior.
This is an important element in almost every work of fiction, whether it is a short story, or
anywhere in between. It is a literary device that is used step by step in literature to highlight and
explain the details about a character in a story.

DIRECT /EXPLICIT CHARACTERIZATION: the writer makes direct statements about a

character’s personality and tells what the character is like. It “tells the character” to the reader.

INDIRECT/IMPLICIT CHARACTERIZATION: The writer reveals information about a

character and his personality through the character’s thoughts, words, and actions, along with how
other characters respond to that character, including what they think and say about him. Indirect
shows the character” to the reader.

There are FIVE different methods of indirect characterization:

 Speech: What does the character say? How does the character speak?
 Thoughts: What is revealed through the character’s thoughts and feelings?
 Effect on other characters: What is revealed through the character’s effect on other
people? How do other characters feel or behave in reaction to the character?
 Actions: What does the character do? How does the character behave?
 Looks: What does the character look like? How does the character dress?

ACTIVITY 3. Big and Little

Let the students read the folklore from East Africa entitled “Big Kihou and Liitle Kihuo”.
Students characterize Kihuo and Orambo- based on what they think, feel, do, and what the other
characters tell about them.

Then, the teacher presents the following quoted statements (taken from the story Big Khuo and
Little Kihuo) to the students and let the students infer on the character’s attitude.

A. “I have begged my father to submit me to the three ordeals and to declare me a man. But
he refuses and says that I am too small. However, I have prepared myself for the tests in
secret. I have practice throwing the club, my right arm has grown strong with exercise, and
my throws are sure.”

B. “A throw like that would have killed even a lion,” said the chief. “But what about your
courage? Are you prepared to creep into a herd of elephants, and to sleep in their midst?”

C. “Separate and gather stones,” he said to his men. “Let each of you find stone and then we
shall make a heap of stones, so that we can see how powerful we are.”

PROCESSING QUESTIONS:
1. What attitude did the characters express in their lives given in A, B, and C?
2. Why did you say so?
(An additional quiz may be given to students. The quiz is attached on the learning plan.)

III. INTEGRATION

A. SYNTHESIS
How does having a good character help in becoming an effective leader?
Having a good character is very important in becoming an effective leader
because it helps the person to build more harmonious relationship with others. Thus,
others would be willing to follow and participate in all the plans set by the leader without
being forced because they feel valued and respected by a leader with a good character.

B. VALUING
Students will write a letter reminding themselves to always have a positive character
towards other people.
