OBSERVATION REPORT:
LESSON PLAN N° 11-12
Trainees: Francisco Diego and Lucila Breton
School: 180
Course: Fourth Form
Mentor teacher: Veronica Kant
Textbooks:
Date: October 30TH, 2019
Trainees prepared a project-based lesson plan that took place over two sessions.
The aim was to revise and put into practice everything children had learnt about
houses and furniture.
Francisco started the lesson by asking his students if they had brought the bedroom
models. As usual, he provided all the instructions in English, showing very good Use
of English and accurate pronunciation and intonation.
He invited children to come to the front to present their projects reasuusring them
that he would help if necessary. This shows the excellent rapport that Francisco
could build with both groups. He is patient and at the same time firm when he asks
pupils to do things. His role as a controller and organizer, together with his constant
facilitator role have helped children’s learning process.
As children were presenting he asked lots of questions to prompt answers using
English.
T: So, what are these?
T: Can you say….?
The room was messy because they had had Art during the previous lesson. It was
the last hour but the children enjoyed the elsson: showing their models, producing
orally. Francisco and Lucila went to children’s desks when they were too shy to go
to the front. They followed each group.
Meanwhile, Lucila took down notes because they were assessing children’s
productions. This was the assessment grid they designed and used:
As regards children’s oral production, most pupils could produce all the vocabulary
required to deal with the task. They responded by using 1,2 or 3 words. Some of
them responded at phrase level. Pronunciation was generally intelligible. They
interacted very well by understanding and answering the teacher’s questions. They
needed constant prompting, compatible with a Pre A1 speaking level.
After the children had all finished their presentations, Francisco congratulated all the
group and both trainees handed in surveys to assess their own performance in a
simple way: I liked……/ I didn´t like. He did not explain to the whole group but he
explained individually saying that they could use L! Spanish or L2 English in their
answers.
It was a great survey and children’s comments were positive: They said they loved
Pete the cat and making the bedroom models.
Then, Lucila and Francisco gave thank you souvenirs to all the children. Francisco
said”A promise is a promise” and they give kids chocolates for their good work.
Both the mentor teacher and the pupils thanked trainees by clapping and hugging
them.
It was a great ending to a highly successful practicum.
The approach used:
They used Task-Based Learning and Project-Based work. As a result, there was
meaningful communication and use of authentic materials,
