COMMUNICATION BARRIER IN WORK PLACE:

Definition of Barriers
Many companies develop difficulties within their organization due to communication

issues. There are five key barriers that can occur within a company: language, cultural

diversity, gender differences, status differences and physical separation.

These barriers to communication are specific items that can distort or prevent

communication within an organization.

The ability for a company to recognize the communication issues and come to a

resolution can drastically improve working conditions, sales and organizational culture.

Let's look at communication barriers through examples at Paint Your Face Cosmetic

Company. There are 5 Biggest Barriers to Effective Communication for example :-

1. Being unclear

When talking about communication barriers, clarity is a hard one to overcome because

everyone’s understanding of something must be different. However, the speaker must

make sure that he is speaking with absolute clarity and there are no ambiguities in

speech.

2. Irregular conversations

You must communicate regularly, try to open up to people in daily basis. If

conversations are irregular, you might not develop enough confidence in addressing
people if you need any help regarding work. This barrier can be overcome by arranging

daily meetings and lunching together.

3. Not listening properly

Listening is a problem in effective communication and nothing works out without

listening properly. People usually jump to assumptions and make up things without

apprehending and letting others finish. This can be overcome by providing resource

material and providing proper trainings or stressing on importance of listening during

meetings.

4. Language Differences

Not Enough Listening Managers need to do their part to close the communication gap

with their employees who have limited English proficiency. Communication is a two-way

street. Listen as much, if not more, than you speak. Encourage feedback, and practice

active listening. Don’t interrupt when others are talking, repeat key points, and ask for

clarification when needed.

5. Stereotypes and generalization

Stereotypes and generalizations are often harmful as it can affect accurate perception.

When you relate people with stereotypes you might not get their clearer view which can

be very worthy. Make sure you don’t hold on to preconceptions because what you are

assuming can only be one part of their personality or might not exist at all.
LANGUAGE BARRIER

Language is needed for any kind of communication, even people with speech

impairments communicate with sign language and brail. Communication becomes

difficult in situations where people don’t understand each other’s’ language. The inability

to communicate using a language is known as language barrier to communication.

Language barriers are the most common communication barriers which cause

misunderstandings and misinterpretations between people.

Most of the people in the world do not speak English or, even if they use, it is

their second or third language. If the speaker and receiver do not use same

language and words, there is no meaning to the communication. Not using the

words that other person understands makes the communication ineffective and

prevents message from being conveyed.

Causes of Language Barriers

1. Difference in Language
Difference in language is the most obvious barrier to communication as two people

speaking two different languages cannot communicate with each other. For example, an

American goes to Korea. The person does not understand Korean Language and most

people in Korea do not understand English. So, when the person speaks, the

communication is worthless as the other Korea person doesn’t understand it.

2. No Clear Speech
People who speak soft or in a small voice cannot be understood. The sender might be

saying something whereas the receiver might understand something else. Though

speaking common language, people might have difficulty understanding the meaning of

the message and the feedbacks. This might also be a cause of obstacle in

communication.

3. Word Choice
The choice of word used in describing anything must be considered before

communicating. The words used by a particular person to show their agreement on

something can be taken as sarcasm which is negative in nature.

Words with two meanings, homonyms, homographs, homophones should always be

avoided as it doesn’t send the proper meaning and can be interpreted in any way. So,

the message will not be sent as intended which acts as a type of language barrier in

communication.

4. Grammar and Spelling

Grammar and spelling become a barrier in communication as people from different

parts of the world can be using it differently even in a particular word. Similarly,

grammar and spelling mistakes create a huge communication barrier in written

communication. For example, a person makes a mistake of typing done as don. The

spelling and grammar checker of the computer does not label it as wrong as don is also

a correct word. But, the word can change the whole meaning of the sentence or make

the sentence not understandable.

These are some of the most common causes of language barriers in communication.

There are many other causes too like language disabilities, noise, distance or use of

metaphors or similes which can be included in other barriers

like physiological and physical. Some language barriers can be overcome with practice

or other ways like translation, interpreter, language classes, visual methods, etc.

whereas some barriers act as problems in a person’s whole life. These barriers must

not be present to make the communication effective.

BARRIER TO COMMUNICATION IN PHAMACY

Communication is critical, not only in the pharmacy environment but in any environment

where there are people ‘present’. The clinical role of the pharmacist means that there

are plenty of opportunities to communicate with the patient and with other health

professionals. Interpersonal communication can broadly be defined into verbal and

non-verbal categories. Verbal communication relies other words spoken and can be

hindered by the use of over complicated language and medical jargon when speaking to

patients. Non-verbal communication can include paralinguistic features and body

language. The latter is divided into eye contact, facial expression, proximity, touch and

posture. Effective communication improves patient safety, in addition to giving

reassurance to the pharmacist that the message has been understood. It involves

overcoming most if not all barriers to communication. Examples of such barriers include;

background noise, patients with hearing difficulties, body language, time and much

more. Other barrier that we can find is Embarrassed patients. Whether it is an elderly

gentleman with erectile dysfunction, a teenage girl with birth control, or any one of the

many scenarios in between, the last thing these patients want to do is speak with a

pharmacist about their medication and particular situation.

It is very important to not let this particular patient wait for more than a few moments at

the counseling area, as they are apt to just head for the door. More often than not, this

patient needs to feel a sense of privacy and trust. As a pharmacist, your body language

and tone of voice will significantly affect your ability to provide an appropriate counseling

session to this patient. Lean in toward the patient and speak softly so they need to lean

in to hear you. It is critical to ask embarrassed patients to describe exactly how their

prescriber told them to take their medication. This will open up an opportunity to clarify

any misunderstanding or concerns, as well as discuss additional counseling information

that is necessary for the patient’s particular situation. The patient is involved indecisions

about their care and together with the pharmacist the desired outcomes of their drug

treatment can be established. The progression of the patient’s drug treatment can be

monitored to see whether these outcomes are achieved. Communication is vital for any

of this to occur and each year at university has helped me to further develop these

necessary communication skills.
